Bidding to step up into League OneClaimed National League title last seasonExperience being put to good useWHAT HAPPENED?

The Red Dragons have blended potential with pedigree in a star-studded squad, with the backing of Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney helping to entice top talents to North Wales. The likes of Mullin and McClean fall into that category, having taken professional steps backwards in order to race forwards again.

Wrexham claimed the National League title in record-breaking style last season and have got a taste for promotion parties. The hope is to see another one thrown in 2024, with Phil Parkinson’s side sitting inside the top three of League Two while seeing the fourth tier summit loom into view.

WHAT PARKINSON SAID

Parkinson has said of getting over that line, with there a few more gears that his side can move through if needed: “I think we are still growing as a team. The mentality is so strong; James McClean, Steven Fletcher, Paul Mullin and people like that in the team are real strong characters and you can see that in our performances. I so pleased with the group. They are great to work with and we are going to keep driving on. We are going to give it everything we have got to try and get in that top-three come the end of the season. I still think there's players with a bit more to come, I really do. But we have got players who are big-match players and historically they produce when it matters the most.”

Wrexham have shown that they can handle pressure and expectation, while performing in front of documentary cameras, and Parkinson should have few concerns regarding the ability of his troops to maintain a surge towards the finishing post in 2023-24.

Sinclair makes injury pledge as Celtic suffer quadruple blow

[ad_pod ]

Scott Sinclair won’t let Celtic’s title bid be knocked off course by injuries.

The winger has been in sparkling form recently with eight goals in nine games helping Celtic establish a six-point advantage at the top of the SPFL table.

While the goals and points have piled up, so to have the injuries with Odsonne Edouard, Mikael Lustig, James Forrest and Ryan Christie picking up knocks in the 2-0 defeat of St Johnstone.

Lustig’s injury completes a clean sweep of absent defenders with Filip Benkovic, Dedryck Boyata and Kieran Tierney already missing, as is Tony Ralston.

Sinclair has managed to steer clear of injury so far this season but is well aware of the mounting setbacks.

“It is frustrating for some of the guys, especially the like of Odsonne who has just got back fit, but it is just football, as difficult as it can be,” he said, as quoted by The Evening Times. “But hopefully they will all be back as soon as possible and we won’t allow it to take away from what we need to do.”

Brendan Rodgers will need to assess his walking wounded over the next 48 hours but did get the bonus of giving new signing Jeremy Toljan 45 minutes in the win over St Johnstone.

Timothy Weah proved that he is worth a staring place with a goal and an assist against Tommy Wright’s side, while others such as Mikey Johnston wait to get their opportunity.

With Kris Ajer suspended for Wednesday’s match against Hibs, Nir Bitton is likely to be pushed back into defence. Jack Hendry could potentially be called up onto the bench for the first time this year as well.

The Netherlands face Germany on Wednesday night in the UEFA Women's Nations League's third-place match. However, it's significance goes way beyond that, with the winner to get UEFA's final place in the Olympic women's football tournament this summer. However, the Dutch will have to do it without Miedema and Pelova after announcing that the pair have left the national team and returned to Arsenal.

AdvertisementWHAT WAS SAID

In a brief statement on Tuesday, the Netherlands' national team said: "Vivianne Miedema and Victoria Pelova are not available for next Wednesday's UEFA Women's Nations League Finals match against Germany. Both players have left the Dutch national team selection and are returning to Arsenal."

The news will also be of concern to Arsenal fans. The Gunners face Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday, looking to get revenge on their local rivals after a first-ever loss to them in December. A win will be vital in keeping their WSL title hopes alive, too, with Arsenal now only three points behind leaders Chelsea. Next Wednesday, the Gunners then have a huge Continental Cup semi-final against Aston Villa. Miedema and Pelova will be huge losses if they are unavailable in a big week.

The United States took the lead in that contest courtesy of a spectacular first-half strike from AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic, but the game was level by the interval and the hosts ran out of steam in the second 45 as the German visitors to Hartford, Connecticut moved through the gears.

Gundogan restored parity for Germany, and McKennie concedes that the former Manchester City captain had his American rivals chasing shadows.

Juventus midfielder McKennie told : “We had a great start to the game, the energy levels were high. I'm sure they went inside [at half-time] and saw how they could hurt us. I think the pressing in the second half, for us, we kind of got a little bit disorganised. I mean, a player like Gundogan, if you leave him a little space, he punishes you, and that's what he was doing, he was building up and made it very difficult for us. I feel like we couldn’t really get close to him, we were just defending in our box the whole time.”

WHAT THEY SAID

Niclas Fullkrug and Jamal Masiala were also on target for Germany, with McKennie aware that the USMNT have things to work on tactically before facing Ghana next Tuesday.

He added: “We could have been a little bit better at preventing the counter-attacks or the long balls in behind the backline, because Germany has speed up top for sure, and their little switches that they had, just closing the middle down, I think would have helped a lot. But Gregg’s a tactician, so we'll definitely go in and look at video and then review it and see how we could have done better.”

'He was a leader in so many ways' – NWSL side Kansas City Current dedicate new press box to the late Grant Wahl – a trailblazer in American soccer coverage

Current set to open new stadium in 2024Dedicate new press box to Grant WahlAmerican journalist passed during 2022 World CupWHAT HAPPENED?

A group gathered at the soon-to-be-open CKPC Stadium on Thursday for the dedication of at the Current's new grounds. The late journalist was beyond an influential figure in American soccer – both men's and women's – but also a dedicated fan of the game, who helped popularize the sport across the world. Wahl's memory will forever be remembered now with the beautiful tribute, to what his brother, Eric Wahl, believes will be a place of 'inspiration' for future journalists.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Grant passed in Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, suffering an aortic aneurysm during the quarterfinal match between Argentina and Netherlands. Following his passing, U.S. soccer released the following statement: "The entire US soccer family is heartbroken to learn that we have lost Grant Wahl. Fans of soccer and journalism of the highest quality knew we could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game and its major protagonists: teams, players, coaches and the many personalities that make soccer unlike any sport.

"Here in the United States, Grant's passion for soccer and commitment to elevating its profile across our sporting landscape played a major role in helping to drive interest in, and respect for, our beautiful game. "As important, Grant's belief in the power of the game to advance human rights was, and will remain, an inspiration to all. "Grant made soccer his life's work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us."

Now, nearly one year later, the Current are dedicating their new home to the brilliant and forever influential Wahl.

WHAT CURRENT CO-OWNERS ANGIE & CHRIS LONG SAID

Speaking to the KC Star, Angie Long said: “His life’s work was growing this game in this country, and I don’t think there’s any more physical manifestation of it than this,” said Long, who attended High School with Wahl. “And for a woman’s team, as well, which he was equally as passionate about.”

“We hope this also inspires others to be as unselfish and as honest and to have as much foresight as he did,” added Long. “Because I think when this country didn’t know very much about soccer, Grant did. And when it wasn’t a thing to support female athletes and to really believe in and push for equality in the game, Grant did. He was a leader in so many ways.”

In a press release, Long added: “Grant was one of the first people we consulted with the idea of founding an NWSL team in Kansas City. His grounded advice, deep understanding of the soccer ecosystem, connections and thoughtful suggestions were critical ingredients to our decision to launch a new team on an unprecedented timeframe.”

“Giving us even more conviction around our facilities vision, Grant was particularly drawn to the idea of having the first stadium built for a women’s professional team right in his hometown of Kansas City,” said co-owner and founder Chris Long. “The Kansas City Current will always be grateful to Grant for his pivotal role in the launch of the Club.”

WHAT WAHL'S FAMILY SAID

In a press release, Wahl's brother Eric said: “Grant and I were born and raised here in Kansas City and our lives were shaped by the sports culture in this region, but more specifically, by those who told those stories through the media. This is a great honor to our family. I hope that those journalists that come through this press box will see Grant’s dedication to telling the personal, challenging and compelling stories of this sport and its athletes, then seek to celebrate and elevate them through stories he would be proud to hear.”

Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, added: “My family and I are thankful that my husband Grant Wahl is being recognized in this way. It is my hope that future generations of sports journalists sitting in this press box will be inspired to carry on Grant's legacy: holding those in power to account, advocating for human rights and equity and understanding that ‘stick to sports’ is a false mantra. As Ted Lasso said, ‘Soccer is life’. When sports are divorced from everything else in life, they are gutted of their essence and meaning.”
