Rangers: McCoist surprised by Itten call

Rangers legend Ally McCoist expected Giovanni van Bronckhorst to give Cedric Itten a chance against Motherwell on Saturday.

The lowdown

Rangers exercised their recall option to bring Itten back from his loan at Bundesliga outfit Greuther Furth in January.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He made consecutive starts against Livingston and Ross County at the end of January, but then missed out on nine straight matchday squads, with his only game time coming in the Scottish League Cup against Annan Athletic.

Ahead of the Gers’ trip to Fir Park, though, striker Kemar Roofe joined long-term absentee Alfredo Morelos on the injury list.

That seemed to present an opportunity for Itten, but Van Bronckhorst instead opted to field Fashion Sakala up front.

Itten did feature for the first time since the winter, but only for the final four minutes as a substitute.

The latest

Rangers’ all-time leading goalscorer McCoist, speaking live in commentary for Sky Sports, says it may be a damning reflection that Itten didn’t start even with the injuries Rangers had.

“Interesting, I heard the boys talking before the game,” he said, via Ibrox News.

“Obviously no Roofe, no Morelos, however would it not have been an opportunity for Cedric Itten? Or is he so far down the pecking order [that he didn’t get a chance]?”

The verdict

It’s clear now that Van Bronckhorst simply doesn’t rate Itten all that highly.

It was pretty telling that the Dutchman didn’t even include him in his squad for the Europa League knockout stages.

Itten was called ‘magnificent’ by former boss Steven Gerrard but regrettably, his record for Rangers – just seven goals in 48 appearances – doesn’t live up to that billing.

It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see Rangers look to shift the £2.7million-rated, £14,000-per-week frontman from their wage bill come the summer.

In other news, one Rangers player was rated just 4/10.

Pushed to the margins, Prior takes centre stage

Matt Prior has had a rough time of it of late, so his superb, fighting 102 not out was quite a statement of intent

Andrew Miller at Trent Bridge31-Jul-2010This has been a week in which Test cricket’s merits have been shown in vastly contrasting lights. On the one hand a shocking contest has dribbled to a conclusion in Colombo, with 17 wickets falling in five days at the SSC, including 10 batsmen passing fifty – five of them for a hundred, two of them for a double. At Trent Bridge, on the other hand, consecutive days have passed in which 15 and 13 wickets have tumbled, and all told, 18 batsmen to date have been dismissed in single figures. There’s no question whatsoever which of the two contests has been the most compelling, not even at a stage of the Trent Bridge game when only one team has the slightest hope of victory. At 15 for 3 overnight, Ladbrokes are offering odds of 2-1 for England to wrap up victory before lunch on the fourth day, but even if they do so, the effort that Matt Prior put into today’s magnificent unbeaten century will not be compromised by the eventual gulf between the sides.Prior has had a rough time of it of late. Through no great fault of his own, he’s been pushed to the margins of England’s wider squad planning, with Craig Kieswetter’s emergence leaving him in limbo in the limited-overs set-up. No-one in their right mind has seriously pedalled the notion that his Test berth is in the same sort of jeopardy, and yet, such is the nature of the England wicketkeeping position, the doubts require almost daily dispersal. Therefore, a superbly combative 102 not out, forged from a position of peril at 72 for 5, was quite some statement of intent. It was Prior’s third hundred in 32 Tests, and his first since Trinidad in March 2009, but by the close of play, his satisfaction derived from the manner in which he’d transformed his team’s position, rather than the fact he’d logged another statistic in his record-book.”I’m not a huge stats watcher, or a stat man,” he said. “I got a 93 in my last Test [against Bangladesh at Old Trafford], so it doesn’t feel that long ago that I contributed to the team. Whether it was important to show what I could do, I don’t know, but I went in in a position when the team needed me to get stuck in, and getting runs for the team was the important bit.”In fact, a century could hardly have been further from Prior’s thoughts for much of his innings, which began in the midst of yet another of Pakistan’s inspired bursts with the ball, as Umar Gul swiped three wickets in four overs to leave his team dreaming of an attainable run-chase. His most immediate concern was to atone for his part in the run-out of Eoin Morgan, and by the time he was joined by the No. 11, Steven Finn, he had a long, long way still to travel, on 63 not out.”I don’t know what happened there,” he said of the Morgan mix-up. “At that time, too many risky runs and singles wasn’t the best idea, so it was a bit of miscommunication really. I didn’t hear him say yes, he didn’t hear me say no, and we ended up looking at each other, with him halfway down the wicket and me thinking: ‘Oh my gosh, it’s happened again’. It is very disappointing to be involved in a run-out at any stage, especially when it involves arguably your best player of the moment, so I thought I’d best knuckle down here!”Knuckle down he did, with Finn proving to be the most obdurate of allies. While his stonewalling prowess came as a surprise and a delight to a packed Trent Bridge crowd who cheered every step towards England’s eventual declaration, Prior himself had no doubt whatsoever about Finn’s ability, having witnessed it at close quarters during a rare Championship appearance for Sussex against Middlesex at Uxbridge last week. With Morgan at the other end, Finn had blocked out 35 dot-balls in a 12-over partnership, to save the game with only two wickets standing.”It was thoroughly annoying,” Prior recalled. “But as he walked to the wicket today, I said something along the lines of ‘Same again today please mate!’ He did such a fantastic job, not only in the way he played, but what he contributed to the partnership in between overs, in terms of gameplans and all those things. He did all that was expected of him, and more.”Regardless of his faith in his team-mate, Prior still had to endure some nervy moments at the non-striker’s end, as he crept through the nineties – single by single – with many of his shots coming from the first ball of an over. “My gameplan was to look for twos and fours, but every run counted, I felt, especially when Finny came up to me to say he felt confident at holding up an end. It got a bit frustrating at the end because I wasn’t quite hitting the gaps, but I didn’t want to turn singles down.”That failure to work the angles is the precise reason why Prior’s spot in the one-day side has been passed across to Kieswetter, who may lack the subtlety of, say, Morgan, but tends to find the boundaries with a lot of bottom hand. In terms of pure batsmanship, however, there’s no comparison between the two men whatsoever. Kieswetter has time on his side and a talent to cultivate, but as a battler who can be backed to produce on demand, Prior’s place for the Ashes is utterly non-negotiable.”I’ve batted at six with success, and I’ve batted at seven, and I feel well placed to do the role in each, as long as we have the right balanced team to win the Test match,” he said. “International cricket is all about pressure and how you respond to it. I’ve not played a day for England as a batsman-keeper that’s not been under pressure, but I enjoy and thrive on it, and I embrace it rather than get nervous about it.”

Ex-Celtic hero loves PFA Team of the Year

Former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie is ecstatic that six Hoops players have made it into PFA Scotland’s Team of the Year for 2021/22.

The Lowdown: Hoops dominate Team of the Year

The Hoops are on the verge of being named the new Scottish Premiership champions, taking a six-point lead with them into the final three matches of the campaign.

Celtic’s dominance has now been recognised, with the news that Cameron Carter-Vickers, Josip Juranovic, Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor, Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi are all named in the Team of the Year.

All six have enjoyed superb seasons, playing a huge role in Ange Postecoglou’s side being so close to title glory.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts to news

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie couldn’t hide his delight at the news:

“I can’t believe it, if you told me six players would make it into the team of the year at the end of last season, I wouldn’t believe it. The team we had last year was rotten. In such a short time Ange has turned it around.

“If you look at those six, Juranovic, Jota, Kyogo and Carter-Vickers all came in this season. I can’t believe that. Four brand new signings all in the team of the season, it’s just, wow.

“That is down to Ange as well because he brought them in. He is the one to thank in all this.

“McGregor and Rogic have improved so much as well, all of them deserve it. I know it doesn’t really mean much but it’s just another sign for the incredible year we have had and hopefully it’s a good sign for the future.”

The Verdict: Richly deserved recognition

To see over half of the Team of the Year dominated by Celtic players is just reward for their efforts, with Postecoglou getting huge amounts out of his squad in his first season at Parkhead.

Carter-Vickers has been an influential figure on loan from Tottenham, averaging 4.1 aerial duel wins per game, while Rogic and McGregor have brought class and fight to the midfield.

Meanwhile, Jota has been another inspired loan signing, chipping in with 18 goal contributions in the league – nine goals and assists each – and both Juranovic and Kyogo have also done their bit for the cause at right-back and in attack, respectively.

PCB revokes suspended trio's central contracts

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended the central contracts of Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Nov-2010The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended the central contracts of Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, who are being investigated for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing during the tour of England in 2010. The decision was taken after Butt and Amir’s appeals against their provisional suspensions were dismissed by the ICC in Dubai on Sunday. Asif, who withdrew his appeal ahead of the hearings, also remained provisionally suspended.’We only give contracts to players who can play for Pakistan. Until their cases are decided … they can’t get any benefits from the board in terms of contracts,” PCB legal advisor Taffazul Rizvi said.Board official Zakir Khan also said the contracts had to be revoked following the ICC’s latest decision. “Their contracts were active until the appeal hearing, but once their initial appeals were rejected, under the ICC code we can’t keep them on contracts.”The board pays a monthly salary of about Rs. 250,000 ($2916) to players in the top grade, which the three suspended players are now ineligible for. Butt, Amir and Asif will appear before an independent anti-corruption tribunal that will look into the actual charges and give a verdict on whether they are innocent or guilty. Amir’s lawyer Shahid Karim told that under the ICC code of conduct, the sport’s governing body had to decide by December 2 whether to remove or retain the suspensions on the players.

A preview of the third South Africa-New Zealand T20 in Port Elizabeth

Start time 1430 (1230 GMT)Boxing Day scrap: Martin Guptill will be key with his gloves on•Gallo ImagesBig Picture The traditional Boxing Day Test has been replaced by a Twenty20 and although it may not match up to the drama or the prestige of a serious contest in whites, it is a decider. For the young South African side being led by Faf du Plessis, a win would reiterate the quality of the No. 1 Test side’s bench strength. But New Zealand need this one more after all the pre-series controversy regarding the captaincy and the main course of the tour – the two Tests – just a week away. The importance of the coming challenges was not lost on Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, who said after the win in East London that the game was not a “one-off” and that the team needed to keep similar tempo through the tour. There were other bright signs apart from Martin Guptill’s match-winning hundred. Rob Nicol and McCullum played responsible supporting roles to Guptill, Nathan McCullum was economical, and Doug Bracewell picked up wickets despite being expensive. These are the players the team will rely on through much of the tour and from New Zealand’s perspective, it is critical they take the confidence of a win in the T20 series forward. With no Boxing Day Test, the South African fans would have to contend with a four-day void after the match and would hope for a small Christmas present from their team. South Africa have had more balanced performances in the two matches so far, with du Plessis leading from the front, and still are favourites to wrap up the series.Form guide (Completed games, most recent first) South Africa LWLLL

The head-to-head record between the teams is 7-3 in favour of South Africa Quotes “It’s going to take one person or a couple of people to take the game away from the other team and hopefully that’s going to be us again. “David [Miller] came in and hit the ball sweetly to all parts of the field. It’s great to have him back, he is a young talent and he brings a lot to the team. It was a fantastic innings, to come in at that stage when conditions made it difficult to come in and start scoring was great, I certainly struggled when I came in.”

Newcastle transfer news on Saint-Maximin

Transfer insider Dean Jones has now dropped some worrying news on Allan Saint-Maximin from inside Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: £50m value

It has been reported that the St. James’ Park faithful would now be willing to sell Saint-Maximin in the summer, if an offer of £50m came in for him.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He has been their second-best performer in the Premier League this season according to WhoScored, and so it seems strange that the North East club would be willing to let him go.

The Latest: Contract dispute

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has shared that Saint-Maximin wants a pay rise on Tyneside as he believes that he is their ‘main man’, but the Magpies are ‘not planning’ to meet his demands at the moment:

“Saint-Maximin, he’s got four years left on his contract. And he wants a pay rise, and thinks he’s the main man in that team, and he was the main man in that team, he was the talisman.

“But, Newcastle don’t really see it that way going forward, and they’re not planning to meet the demands that he wants.”

The Verdict: Worrying

The fact that both parties do not seem like they will be able to come to an agreement is certainly worrying going forward.

Yes, Saint-Maximin still has four years left on his current deal, but the new owners risk him forcing his way out if he is unhappy with his situation.

The Frenchman is simply too important of a player to lose at this stage in the project, given the influence he has on the team – after all, no teammate has come close to his six man-of-the-match awards in the top flight, while he also averages more shots and dribbles per match than any other Toon player (WhoScored).

Nonetheless, they need to come to an agreement soon, or risk losing him in the summer.

Celtic: Hoops could look at Bevis Mugabi

Celtic have been linked with a January swoop for Motherwell defender Bevis Mugabi, according to The Scotsman’s Andrew Smith.

The Lowdown: Mugabi profiled

The Uganda defender, who once claimed he had Liverpool winger Sadio Mane in his ‘pocket’ during an international clash, has been at Fir Park since 2019. The 26-year-old has made 57 appearances for the club, 19 of which have come during the current campaign.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-20/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

A 12-cap Uganda international, the 6 foot 1 beast is primarily a centre-back who can also play as a right-back and was previously on the books at Southampton.

The Latest: Parkhead links

Smith shared a story for The Scotsman on Saturday morning, assessing what the Hoops may now do in the January window following their triple Japanese swoop.

He claimed that Ange Postecoglou could look to add to his defensive options, with interest in Mugabi emerging.

The Verdict: Is he needed?

With Christopher Jullien set to make a long-awaited return following the international break, a move for Mugabi doesn’t seem to be pivotal at this moment in time.

When the Frenchman returns, Postecoglou will have six centre-backs to call upon, all of whom could be permanent players should Cameron Carter-Vickers’ loan spell turn into a full-time switch over the coming weeks.

That should be plenty for Postecoglou, so perhaps he and new CEO Michael Nicholson should look elsewhere when it comes to any further winter additions.

Ange drops Celtic injury update

Celtic are finally back in action tomorrow evening with an SPFL clash against Hibernian at home for their first league match of 2022.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou shared some injury news that will surely have a lot of Celtic fans pleased and excited to see their team playing again.

What’s the news?

Postecoglou revealed that Celtic winger Jota could make a return to action on Monday after being out injured since early December with a hamstring issue.

He is back in training and now very much ready to join up with the squad again. Whether he starts, however, is another matter.

Fans delighted

Since joining the Parkhead club on a loan deal from Benfica, the 22-year-old has managed to score eight goals and provide six assists in 18 appearances across all competitions, showing just how much of a useful attacking outlet he has been for the team this season and why the fans would be delighted to see him back in the side on Monday if he’s fit enough.

In addition to his goals and assists this term, Jota’s performances in the SPFL have been very impressive as well with WhoScored listing him as Celtic’s fourth-highest rated player with an overall rating of 7.48/10, highlighting just how well he has settled into the team and got to grips with the Scottish Premiership.

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to say that Celtic would have a great chance of beating Hibs on Monday if they have Jota in their team.

However, given how long it’s been since he last played for the Hoops and how important he’s proved himself to be for the team, it may not be worth Postecoglou taking the risk of putting the Portuguese winger back in the team straight away unless he’s 100% fit and ready to play with no risk of further injury to his hamstring.

Although, with Celtic currently six points off the top spot in the SPFL table, it could be worth taking a gamble with the forward if that will give them the best chance of securing all three points and moving further up the table.

Either way, this match will be a great way for the Hoops to get back into the swing of things and start their year off positively.

Rangers agree Diallo deal with Man Utd

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left delighted over transfer news which has emerged on Amad Diallo.

Italian football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted this afternoon that the Manchester United starlet is set to join the Scottish champions on loan for the rest of the season, but with no buy option included. The deal has now been confirmed by Rangers, adding to the fans’ prior excitement.

At just 19 years of age, Diallo is a rising prospect in the sport, having impressed at both youth and senior level for Serie A heavyweights £37.2m. He has also played three times already for Ivory Coast’s senior side despite his age, further showing his talent.

Rangers have done very well to attract the Premier League youngster to Scottish football, and he will no doubt give Giovanni van Bronckhorst another useful squad option.

Aston Villa approach Juve for Bentancur

Aston Villa enjoyed their first win in three away from home at Goodison Park on Saturday, which has now put the side into the top half of the Premier League table, with the team climbing six places and earning 16 points since Steven Gerrard was appointed just over two months ago.

Gerrard is now taking on his first transfer window in charge, and with two star signings already made in Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho, he could be on his way to making his third marquee addition of the month.

What’s the word?

Sky Sports journalist, Rob Dorsett, has confirmed that Aston Villa have made an approach for Juventus player, Rodrigo Bentancur.

Dorsett tweeted; “EXCL: #avfc have made an approach to #Juve for defensive midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.”

“Steven Gerrard believes the 24yr-old would offer good competition for Douglas Luiz. Negotiations between the two clubs are ongoing. It’s thought Juve value the Uruguay international at £16m.”

Fans will be buzzing

With Marvelous Nakamba sustaining a serious injury and the defensive midfield position being a thin area of the squad, fans will be buzzing to hear that the club have made moves for Bentancur to join the squad at Villa Park in January, with many already taking to social media to give their thoughts on the potential signing.

One fan tweeted: “Not even bothered about getting Bissouma now, Bentancur is an unbelievable footballer.”

The 24-year-old has made 25 appearances so far this season, with 17 of those in the starting line-up, bagging three assists across all competitions from his defensive role in midfield.

He is not short of praise either from Juventus legends who have played with him, with Gianluigi Buffon claiming the midfielder has “something different to everyone else” and added that he is “reliable tactically, technically and psychologically.”

Bentancur’s experience of winning seven trophies, including three league titles over his four and a half years at the Serie A club, whilst competing at the highest level in the Champions League, playing alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Giorgio Chiellini, will definitely be an influence Gerrard wants to add into his team to inspire his current players to push on and compete for European football.

As a result, he would very much appear to be a perfect addition as Villa look to capitalise on the lure Digne and Coutinho have added to playing for Villa.
