West Brom: Bruce needs Elliot Anderson

Having suffered relegation to the Championship last season, West Brom supporters would have expected their team to bounce straight back up, or at least go close to doing so.

That has not been the case, however, with the Baggies missing the play-off places by eight points, a gap which could have been breached as a consequence of them scoring more goals this season.

With just 52 goals scored across the entire 46-game season, West Brom ended up as the sixth-lowest scorers in the league. That will surely annoy Steve Bruce, who took over as manager from Valerien Ismael in February.

The Baggies need to find goals from somewhere else other than their top scorer Karlan Grant. and a perfect solution to that problem could come in the form of Newcastle United loanee Elliot Anderson.

The 19-year-old, who has spent half of the season on loan at Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers, has grasped the opportunity with both hands; and among his 13 goal contributions (eight goals and five assists) in 21 games, he delivered the all-important final goal to add to his two assists in their majestic 7-0 rout of Scunthorpe United, which sealed an unlikely automatic promotion to League One at the weekend.

On the chalkboard

Having been linked with Coventry City, Reading and Stoke City, it is West Brom who arguably need him the most.

Bruce would agree, having stated that his side are in need of signings for next season when he said (via Birmingham Mail): “I think we need as many as five or six [signings] – a major overhaul is needed… The supporters need a new face or two who they can get right behind.”

Dubbed a “generational” talent by some Newcastle supporters, Anderson offers a much more esteemed service compared to that of Adam Reach, who has just four attacking returns in the form of two goals and two assists in 34 Championship appearances this season.

Occupying the same level of versatility, with the ability to play out on the wing and through the centre, Anderson is much more clinical, presents a greater threat with 13 goals and assists from 21 matches and would bring energy to a team which is in need of youthful presence.

The signing of a prospect rated at around £180k by Transfermarkt could bolster the Baggies’ goal threat considerably and his versatility would allow him to function in either of Bruce’s 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 systems.

Nott’m Forest set to miss out on Aouar

Nottingham Forest are set to miss out on the future signing of Lyon’s Houssem Aouar, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Negotiation rollercoaster

The Reds agreed personal terms to bring the 24-year-old to the Premier League over the summer, and were claimed to have made multiple offers to try and secure his services.

Despite these approaches though, an agreement failed to be reached with the Ligue 1 giants, and if Steve Cooper’s side were hoping to take another bite at the cherry in January, that might now prove difficult.

The Latest: Lyon to offer Aouar new deal

According to French outlet Foot Mercato (via Sport Witness), Lyon are ‘looking to extend’ Aouar’s contract, which is set to expire in 2023.

It’s stated that the midfielder ‘could start speaking with other clubs’ from the New Year, but the Groupama Stadium outfit are ‘keen to avoid’ that happening.

The report reads that Forest ‘might be blocked’ out of a move, should their target end up accepting the fresh terms placed in front of him.

The Verdict: Walk away

Completing the signing of Aouar was always going to be an ambitious move by Forest, but they clearly must have seen that there was no way through in the end.

The ‘impeccable’ maestro, as dubbed by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, is currently valued at £22.5m, but this will surely increase should he put pen to paper on a new deal at Lyon.

The Reds ended up securing Morgan Gibbs-White from Wolves instead, and if Aouar is set to have a bigger price tag over his head in the future, this makes the chances of considering a move even more unlikely.

Liverpool must unleash Kaide Gordon

Liverpool have not had the most faultless of starts to their new campaign, having dropped numerous points in the Premier League and more recently suffering a Champions League drubbing in Naples.

Even the games which they have won, against the likes of Ajax and Newcastle United, they have relied upon late goals to snatch victory.

It is not the confident and assured side we are used to seeing, and it is clear that the absence of Sadio Mane has disrupted their free-flowing attack more than Jurgen Klopp expected. He scored 120 times and assisted 49 times for a side that won nearly everything during his time at the club.

That is why he could perhaps turn to a youngster to add some freshness to his front line, with Kaide Gordon a natural option to succeed the Senegalese speedster.

The 17-year-old has only made a handful of senior appearances for the Reds but did manage to bag his first goal in a 4-1 win over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup last January.

The tricky winger clearly outlined that the U18s Premier League was below his station, having scored nine and assisted a further three in just 15 games.

Despite his age, he seems to have taken to the Premier League 2 with similar ease, again scoring four and assisting another one in just eight games.

He has already proven that he can handle the step up in age division, and there is no doubt that it won’t be long until he makes that last step up to break into the first team.

Speaking after his first goal for the club, Klopp labelled him a “special kid” before claiming that “he is a really calm, a great finisher.”

He continued:

“Kaide is a special talent, and it’s great to see that he’s already doing well and making an impression”.

With the German already seemingly a big fan of the youngster, it should be no surprise to see him break through in the coming years. His arrival comes at a good time, with Liverpool having scored 15 goals this Premier League season in six games.

However, nine of those came against a hopeless AFC Bournemouth side, so in reality, it papers over the cracks that are their misfiring front line.

Perhaps Gordon can come in and add a bit more hunger and desire, revitalising those around him and kickstarting his side’s campaign properly now, helping those around Anfield forget about the now long-departed Mane.

Spurs: Pochettino had a ‘mare on Trippier

Tottenham Hotspur are currently enjoying a fine unbeaten start to the new season, although one issue that remains for manager Antonio Conte is at right wing-back, with the Italian seemingly yet to truly settle on a solution in that role.

The former Chelsea boss has deployed Emerson Royal in that role so far this term, although it remains to be seen if the Brazilian is a long-term fit, having endured a difficult debut campaign in English football last season.

Journalist Paul Brown has also suggested that the serial-winning coach remains somewhat unconvinced by both Matt Doherty and summer signing Djed Spence, with the latter man having recorded just one minute of action since his £20m arrival from Middlesbrough.

Even with the addition of the Englishman, there had been reports that Conte and co were searching for another new recruit to play in that right-sided berth, with the 53-year-old seemingly not happy with his current squad options.

The one-time Juventus coach could well have had a perfect solution had Mauricio Pochettino not moved on Kieran Tripper back in 2019, with the England international currently showcasing his undoubted talent back in the Premier League with Newcastle United.

The 31-year-old had been plucked from Burnley by Pochettino back in 2015, going on to score twice and provide an impressive 23 assists in 114 games in all competitions for the north London outfit.

Having assumed a more prominent role after Kyle Walker’s departure in 2017, the Bury-born star went on to play his part in the Lilywhites’ surge to the Champions League final in 2019, having starred for his country a year earlier at the World Cup in Russia.

By his own admission, the 5 foot 10 sensation had been far from his best during that 2018/19 campaign, although it still came as something of a surprise when he was sold to Atletico Madrid on a £20m deal that summer, with owner Daniel Levy having reportedly been offering him around to potential suitors.

That decision has ultimately backfired as the 37-cap gem has since blossomed both in Spain and back in England, notably winning the La Liga title under Diego Simeone during his time in the Spanish capital.

The £144k-per-week man’s subsequent switch to St James’ Park has also proven particularly fruitful, the full-back scoring three goals in just 14 appearances thus far since his January arrival, including a stunning free-kick in the 3-3 thriller with Manchester City earlier this season.

Dubbed a “leader” by journalist Henry Winter, it is his impact off the pitch that has also been keenly felt during his brief stint with the Magpies, having also been a regular fixture under Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate in recent years.

A proven asset both in Europe and the Premier League – as well as at international level – Trippier would well have been the type of quality that Conte is craving, while also offering the ability to play in a wing-back role having done so under Simeone and Southgate.

Letting him depart remains a particularly head-scratching decision as far as Tottenham are concerned.

CRUZEIRO 3 x 1 TOMBENSE (3 x 1 no agregado)

Caso vença o Coxa, o Palmeiras poderá retomar, no máximo, a terceira posição.

Joelinton heir: Wilson plots his first Newcastle move for “special” star

Newcastle United had midfield star Bruno Guimaraes to thank yet again on Saturday as the dependable Brazilian bailed his inconsistent Premier League team out once more.

Without the South American popping up with a last-ditch effort, the Magpies would have likely had to make do with a disappointing share of the points versus Fulham.

In the right place, at the right time, to sneak an effort home after a William Osula shot nearly caught Bernd Leno out, Guimaraes has only further cemented his reputation as a Newcastle “talisman” with his heroic moment, as Match of the Day pundit Michael Carrick glowingly labelled him when assessing the dramatic 2-1 win.

Away from the beloved Toon captain, though, it isn’t entirely rosy in the Newcastle midfield ranks at the moment, with Joelinton showing visible signs of rust.

Joelinton's decline at Newcastle

When looking over some of Newcastle’s recent, modern greats, Guimaraes’ fellow compatriot is surely right at the top of the list as one of the Toon’s most loved talents.

Indeed, the £40m battler has now tallied up a mammoth 232 games for Howe’s men, with 31 goals and 21 assists also coming his way, per Transfermarkt. Still, Newcastle won’t want to be bogged down by living in the past too much, with the number seven looking to be “nowhere near his best” so far this campaign, according to Magpies-based reporter Mark Douglas.

It has been a sad decline for the 29-year-old so far this campaign, with both Sandro Tonali and the aforementioned Guimaraes remaining at the very peak of their powers. In stark contrast, Joelinton doesn’t even have a single goal or assist next to his name so far this season in the Premier League, after collecting a weighty seven goal contributions last campaign.

Eddie Howe is clearly frustrated with his stalwart’s drop-off in form, having hooked Joelinton off at the half-time mark against Brighton and Hove Albion in the middle of October. Moreover, while Guimaraes stole the limelight versus Marco Silva’s men, his waning counterpart only managed to muster up one weak effort on Leno’s net.

He did win ten duels, in all fairness, but with Joelinton edging towards being 30 years of age next year, it could soon be an apt time for Newcastle to be on the hunt for some more midfield reinforcements, with the likes of Joe Willock, too, in reserve no longer cut out for the bright lights of the top-flight.

Rumours are circulating that Howe and Co. have their eye on one particular EFL star to boost their midfield options, as a dream Joelinton heir is potentially in the works.

Newcastle plot move for special star

Ross Wilson will view January as the perfect time to try and tie down some of the Toon’s best assets, as well, with talk now centring on the new Newcastle sporting director attempting to iron out an extended contract for Guimaraes.

Reports also suggest that Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney is on the agenda, with TBR Football recently revealing that the Premier League outfit is monitoring the tenacious Boro ace ahead of a potential January move, alongside top-flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and Crystal Palace.

If Newcastle are searching for fresh blood to eventually replace Joelinton, they would strike gold in landing Hackney, with the “special” 23-year-old – as he was once labelled by analyst Ben Mattinson – very much capable of a fierce strike like the relentless Brazilian, as seen in this superb effort being rifled home last season.

With 111 Championship appearances now under his belt, and with two goals and two assists heading his way this season for Rob Edwards’ men, it really does feel as if Hackney might be the revamp Howe and Co. need centrally, so they don’t have to depend on a diminishing Joelinton as much.

Staring at the above table in great detail further shows off Hackney’s obvious similarities to those of Joelinton, with 5.3 ball recoveries averaged per Championship clash definitely backing up Edwards’ claims that his number seven is a talent with “loads of energy”.

At his Toon prime, that was what Joelinton was very much known for. Yet, he pales in comparison here right now, with only 3.9 ball recoveries averaged on his end in the league above.

Of course, it’s a risk to assume that Hackney will immediately be as forceful in the Premier League. But, it could be a gamble worth exploring, rather than holding out hope on Joelinton returning to his intimidating peak.

Newcastle star who's in “form of his life” is as undroppable as Guimaraes

This Newcastle United star has now made himself as undroppable as Bruno Guimaraes after another fine display on Saturday.
