Alastair Cook believes his England side are ready to create history and shed their unwanted record as they prepare to meet India in the final of the Champions Trophy.England are the only side involved in the tournament never to have won a global ODI competition. They have reached the finals of three World Cups (1979, 1987 and 1992) and one previous Champions Trophy (2004) but have always finished runners-up.While Cook accepted that India deserve to go into Sunday’s final as favourites, he expressed confidence in his team’s ability to prevail and admitted victory would rank as highly as any achievement in his England career to date.”I’m fully confident in our guys that we can upset India here,” Cook said. “India are unbeaten and have played some very good cricket. But I’m fully confident in our guys. The lads have delivered two excellent performances under pressure in the last two games and I can see no reason why we can’t do it tomorrow.”We’ve been playing some good cricket and it’s an opportunity we’re desperate not to let go. The lads are ready. I’ve never seen them as relaxed as we have been leading up to a big game. But I’m looking around in the guys’ eyes and I know they’re ready to play.”We haven’t won a global 50 over tournament, as everyone keeps reminding me. So we’re desperately keen to try and change that. It would be a great achievement if we can win and one which we will cherish. There’s certain moments in your career where you remember more than others, and if we can win this then I think that would be right up there.”It will be of little consolation if they fall at the final hurdle, but England can take some satisfaction from their progress to the final. After years of modest ODI form, England have developed a side that has shown they can challenge in global tournaments. While they were well-beaten by Sri Lanka, they have subsequently won what amounted to two knock-out games in succession and can look ahead to the 2015 World Cup knowing that the vast majority of this squad should still be available.England’s near misses

1979 World Cup: Mike Brearley and Geoff Boycott gave England a great start before it all went wrong chasing a Viv Richards-inspired West Indies

1987 World Cup: England were cruising at 135 for 2 in pursuit of Australia’s 254 but the chase blew up after reverse-sweep from Mike Gatting.

1992 World Cup: Again England were asked to chase and again faltered, this time to Pakistan galvanised by Imran Khan.

2004 Champions Trophy: England had all but won defending 218 against West Indies but Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw played the innings of their lives.

England have also progressed without two of their best players. Kevin Pietersen has missed the whole event, while Graeme Swann has played just once.It appears Swann may well not play in the final, either. Not only did Cook reiterate the view that Swann will not be risked if there is even “a slight doubt” over his fitness, but James Tredwell’s fine form has alleviated any need to rush Swann back. Indeed, there are many who feel that Tredwell deserves his place on merit, whether or not Swann is available. Swann bowled “a few balls” in the nets on Saturday and was described as “recovering well” by Cook.Tim Bresnan is also available having missed the semi-final to witness the birth of his first child. Bresnan was replaced for that game by Steven Finn, who took the vital wicket of Hashim Amla, but England have huge respect for Bresnan’s skills with bat and ball and he could well return.A new pitch has been allocated for the final but, in common with most modern pitches at Edgbaston, it is still likely to aid spin and, perhaps, reverse swing. Having been under the covers for much of the last couple of days, it may also prove helpful to the seamers for the first hour. As of Saturday afternoon, the groundstaff at Edgbaston were very happy with the state of the outfield and reported no drainage problems. But the weather forecast is not promising.A shared title – the scenario if no result is possible on Sunday – would be an unsatisfactory conclusion to a successful tournament. While it would, in theory, end England’s winless run in global ODI events, would do so in hollow fashion. The ICC insist there is no precedent for having reserve days in the Champions Trophy – there actually was a reserve day in 2002 – but it does seem a shame an extra day could not be found for the final, at least. While England and New Zealand begin a largely meaningless two-match T20I series on Tuesday, the make-up of the sides is vastly different. There are those who suggest that, so often does the weather intervene in England and Wales, that they are not suitable venues for such competitions. It is an understandable reaction, but perhaps the positives of England and Wales hosting events – full houses for games between neutral countries and enthusiastic multicultural crowds – should not be dismissed. It does rain in other countries, too. The 2007 World Cup final, in the Caribbean, was interrupted by rain, while the 2002 Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka was shared between India and Sri Lanka after poor weather interrupted play on two successive days.Cook suggested that England could take confidence from their recent home record against India, but such analysis could equally work the other way. While it is true that India failed to win a single game on their 2011 tour, England have won only five of the last 20 ODIs between the sides going back to the start of 2008. What is more, India would appear to have the batting firepower to adapt should the game be reduced in overs. For India to come to England – where their record is modest – and win such a tournament with a newly restructured team would represent a fine achievement. In some ways, this match represents a clash of ODI cultures. While the India side is packed with explosive batting talent, England possess several technically correct, patient players who will build innings in quite a different way. Their critics say it is an outdated method but, should they win, they will have strong evidence to vindicate their strategy.

Middlesex will keep helping Finn

Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, has said the club will support Steven Finn in his efforts to adjust to bowling off a shortened run-up

Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, has said the club will support Steven Finn in his efforts to adjust to bowling off a shortened run-up. Finn took match figures of 6 for 85 in his first outing of the season against Derbyshire, despite at times struggling to find his rhythm, and Fraser said they would continue to work on technical aspects of his bowling after Finn made changes to his run-up on England’s tour of New Zealand.Finn’s pace was impressive and clearly unsettled Derbyshire’s batsmen in a nine-wicket victory at Lord’s, though Fraser said he “can bowl better”. The shortened run-up is part of Finn’s attempts to stop colliding with the stumps in his delivery stride – an infringement that will be called a no-ball in international cricket from the end of April – and in the match programme, the Middlesex chief executive, Vinny Codrington, alluded to what was presumably a lively exchange on the subject between bowler and coach.”The conversation between Angus Fraser and Steven over his ‘new’ run-up would probably have sold tickets had it been in public,” Codrington wrote. Fraser, however, laughed off any suggestions of a disagreement, stressing that Finn’s wishes were paramount.”It’s difficult when you’re watching it from afar, especially from the other side of the world,” Fraser said, of first seeing the new run-up on television while England were on tour. “Your vision is that it’s shorter than it is – it’s not as short as I thought. It’s five yards shorter than it was so it’s not as though he’s cut his run-up in half.”We had a chat, I’ve got some views but they’re between me and Steven. But he seems happy with it, he wants to go ahead and work with it and we’ll support him. England are very keen that he does it and ultimately he’s their player.”Finn took ten wickets at 39.20 in the three Tests against New Zealand, as the pace attack failed to make the expected impression in a drawn series, and with the Champions Trophy and back-to-back Ashes series on the horizon, England will hope Finn gets used to the adjustments soon. Fraser’s guidance will be important in that process and although he has not discussed the changes with David Saker, England’s bowling coach, he emphasised his backing for Finn, who at 24 has become a key figure for his country in all three international formats.”It’s difficult for Steven, he’s a young man still finding his way, learning all the time as a bowler and he’s going through this process in front of everybody’s eyes,” Fraser said. “A lot of other bowlers did a lot of bowling when they were young with their counties, found their rhythm, knew what they were about. Steven is such an outstanding young fast bowler that he’s going through that development in international cricket and still being very, very competitive.”I haven’t spoken to David Saker, I’ve spoken to Steven. You just want what’s best for Steven, if he’s happy with it that’s the main thing.”

We want to set a target of at least 250 – Tamim

Tamim Iqbal, the top-scorer of Bangladesh’s second innings so far, said the team needed to stage a strong recovery on the fourth day and was aiming at setting a target of at least 250

Bangladesh find themselves in a difficult situation after losing two wickets late on the third day. Tamim Iqbal, the top-scorer of their second innings so far, said the team needed to stage a strong recovery on the fourth day and was aiming at setting a target of at least 250.Bangladesh were reasonably well placed on 142 for 2 but lost two wickets off successive balls with less than an hour’s play left. They are now 52 ahead with six wickets in hand, but only have three genuine batsmen left.”We are on the back foot,” Tamim said. “We were in a good position when [Jahurul Islam] Omi bhai and Mominul [Haque] were batting. I think that was ideal for us. We had eight wickets and had the whole of tomorrow in hand. But we lost two wickets there in the end. We would like to give Sri Lanka a minimum of 250 to chase.”After Tamim fell just prior to the tea interval, and Mohammad Ashraful misjudged a Rangana Herath delivery, Jahurul and Mominul batted solidly and were steering the team to safety. Jahurul, however, fell to a rash stroke and was followed in the shed by Mahmudullah, who couldn’t cover the line of the ball from Herath sufficiently.”I think one or two of the dismissals were questionable. But nerves work for individuals, they all tried their best. We have gone back from a good position, which we have to recover from tomorrow,” said Tamim.Tamim’s own dismissal upset Bangladesh’s rhythm. Tamim had batted positively, despite the slow outfield and a deteriorating pitch. “I was trying to be very positive. Our target was to get over their lead as early as possible and take it from there. We almost did it, but I got out.”I am not worried about my dismissal. The ball didn’t get up as much as it was supposed to, so it wasn’t in my control.”Mushfiqur and Mominul are currently at the crease and with Nasir Hossain to come, and they have the resources to stage a comeback. Sohag Gazi and Abul Hasan have made runs in international cricket, so they can be relied on as well.”The captain [Mushfiqur Rahim] and Mominul are out there. If we can add another 100 in this current partnership and Nasir [Hossain] can chip in with some more, we will be in a much better position than today.”

Sri Lanka undone by inconsistency – Ford

Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford said his side had positives to take from a 3-0drubbing in Australia, but had ultimately been undone by inconsistency

Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford said his side had positives to take from a 3-0 drubbing in Australia, but had ultimately been undone by inconsistency, after Australia completed the whitewash with a five-wicket win in Sydney. Previously in the series, Sri Lanka had been close to achieving a draw in Hobart, where they were bowled out with only 10.4 overs remaining until stumps on day five, but had also sunk to their third-heaviest defeat in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. The visitors could not dominate Australia throughout the series, and alsoconceded substantial first-innings deficits in each match. The batsmencould only muster one score in excess of 300, and only once batted out asession without losing a wicket.Sri Lanka were also sloppy in the field, particularly in Melbourne wherefive chances went down in Australia’s innings, and did not sustainpressure on Australia with the ball. Their poor use of the DRS alsocontributed to their failure.”We’ve got to look at ourselves and accept there were areas where we wereshort and consistency is an important thing,” Ford said. “There wereperiods when we were every bit as good as the Australians, but we weren’table to sustain that. We had the odd session every now and then when we setourselves back quite badly.”Ford said Sri Lanka were encouraged by their performance in Sydney, particularly as their batting in the last Test was driven largely bycontributions from the side’s young batsmen. Twenty three-year-old LahiruThirimanne’s 91 was the highest score in the first innings, while DimuthKarunaratne, 24, top-scored in the second innings with 85. DineshChandimal, 23, then helped his side recover from a middle-order collapse,as he batted with the tail to take Sri Lanka’s lead to 140. He made 62 notout, having forged a 41-run partnership with Nuwan Pradeep for the lastwicket.”A couple of the young guys who have been given opportunities have shownthat they can play at this level. What I was happy with on the final daywas the pride and the passion and the way they went out and fought. A lotof people didn’t feel the Test would continue for as long as it did. A chaplike Nuwan Pradeep going out and handling some nasty pace he wasn’tequipped to handle – he really showed some character, along with youngChandimal. The boys certainly never gave up in the field until the last runwas scored.”I think what’s been positive is that the young batsmen have handled theirtime out of the side so well. They’ve kept working on their game and kepttalking about how they will be absolutely ready when they do get theirchance. Attitude is just so important in a touring group. They’ve showedthe perfect attitude and when the chance has come their way, they’ve reallygrabbed it.”Ford also defended Thilan Samaraweera’s shot selection, after the batsmanhad perished in the second dig to a top-edged swipe across the line toNathan Lyon, off the third ball of his innings. Samaraweera had struggledfor form throughout the series, and made 79 in six innings.”That’s the nature of the game. We see highly experienced players makedecisions that don’t work on the particular day. Looking at the biggerpicture, what was disappointing for me, and I said it after the pressconference, is that we could have perhaps squeezed out a few more runs inthat first innings. And we could have squeezed out a few more in the secondinnings as well.”

T&T hammer Guyana for third straight title

Trinidad & Tobago earned the unique honour of winning the Caribbean Twenty20 for the third successive year, and their fourth in total, after they trampled over a hapless Guyana with a nine-wicket victory

Trinidad & Tobago earned the unique honour of winning the Caribbean Twenty20 for the third successive year, and their fourth title overall, after they trampled over a hapless Guyana with a nine-wicket victory. Anointed the favourites from the moment this final edition of the tournament began on January 6, the defending champions lived up to their reputation with a resounding victory.Kieron Pollard, promoted up the order, swept a massive six over wide long-on for the winning runs, threw his bat aside and stripped off his red Trinidad & Tobago shirt to display a white vest on which was written: “Congratulations T&T team. We have done it. I’m proud.” His team-mate Dwayne Bravo, meanwhile, cut short the victory lap to join the DJ on the performing deck to sing and dance to the popular Soca numbers “Differentology” and “Bacchanalist”, thus adding to the carnival preparations gathering back in Port of Spain and rest of the island.Chasing a modest 117 for victory, T&T started in dominant fashion, racing to 25 after three overs as the opening pair of Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis declared their positive intent. Guyana should have had Lewis early on, however, when he miscued a pull against a short delivery from Ronsford Beaton, one of the most impressive fast bowlers to have emerged from the last two weeks. Beaton charged forward to take the catch in his follow through but wicketkeeper Derwin Christian advanced simultaneously from behind the wicket and both men collided, allowing Lewis, who had run virtually to the other end, to return safely back to his crease.Next ball, Lewis, playing his second match of the tournament, upper-cut Beaton for the first six of T&T’s innings. Lewis meted out further punishment to Steven Jacobs as 20 runs came from the fifth over to bring up the T&T 50, but Beaton got his man when he sent down a short-pitched delivery that Lewis try to duck only to present an easy catch. The Guyana players flashed nervous smiles, perhaps realising the writing was already on the wall. Simmons and Pollard ensured that it was, wrapping up the chase with almost eight overs to spare.Earlier, there had been a lot of emphasis placed on the toss, as only twice in eleven matches played on the St Lucia leg of this tournament had the team batting first won. Veerasammy Permaul, the Guyana captain, called heads, lost and was asked to bat. However, the way the evening panned out, such factors were unlikely to have made any difference to T&T, as they dominated the contest throughout.T&T were coming into the match after a four-day break but they were not slow to regain their rhythm. Guyana’s batsmen were completely at sea against the combination of aggressive fast bowling from Shannon Gabriel and Rayad Emrit, backed up by the wily spin of Samuel Badree and Sunil Narine. It was Gabriel, with his bounding run-up, who clocked consistently blistering pace to put Guyana under the cosh straightaway. After taking just a single from Gabriel’s first over, Christian powerfully drove Badree for the first boundary off the seventh ball of the match. Two balls later, trying to hit straight and over the bowler’s head, Christian mistimed to mid-off. Emrit was the catcher but in Badree’s next over he made a mess of a simple chance from Trevon Griffith, the other Guyana opener, who had attempted a straight hoick.Ramnaresh Sarwan continued his terrible form, falling prey to an familiar ploy. Prompted by Dwayne Bravo, Gabriel adjusted his lengths, pitching more back of length and short against Sarwan, who lost control of his stroke on the charge and top-edged to midwicket. In the same over, Gabriel attacked the ribs of new man Narsingh Deonarine with a lifting delivery, the batsman beaten by the pace to be caught behind.By the time the fielding restrictions were removed after the sixth over, Guyana were 23 for 3. At the halfway mark, they had limped to 49 for 3, with just two fours coming from the bat. It was not the first time Guyana had started off in such sluggish fashion. Throughout the tournament their top order had failed to perform consistently. If anything short cameos and spirited partnerships had carried them to the summit clash. In Guyana’s play-off win over Jamaica, Griffith and Christopher Barnwell had raised a match-turning 79-run run partnership for the third wicket. Less than 24 hours later the pair were once again attempting another rescue act. On 19, Griffith attempted to slog Emrit down the ground but gave another chance to the bowler, who allowed the ball to bounce out of his hands once again. “This guy doesn’t want to be here,” was Ramdin’s response to another life for Griffith and although the batsman slog-swept Narine for a six in the next over he was eventually run out by a Pollard direct hit from short midwicket while going for a tight single. After that steadying, 61-run partnership, the onus was now entirely on Barnwell. However, he was finding it hard to connect and he departed for 32 in the 17th over, top-edging Emrit to point. Two balls later, Leon Johnson was caught in the deep by Simmons: Guyana had lost two wickets for just one run. Although 11 runs came off the final over, Guyana knew it was too little and too late.Guyana, who won the tournament in 2006 and 2010, were playing their fourth match in as many days and were running low on fuel. Clearly they had not had enough time to chalk out a workable strategy, something T&T managed to do convincingly. Possessing as many as seven of West Indies’ World Twenty20-winning squad, T&T had the experience, firepower, nous and balance to win the tournament. In the end they were the deserving winners.

Wheater's best sinks Derbyshire

Adam Wheater’s rapid 70 and Sohail Tanvir’s three wickets on his competition debut enabled Yorkshire Bank 40 champions Hampshire to overcome Derbyshire’s challenge comfortably at the Ageas Bowl.

19-Jun-2013
ScorecardAdam Wheater’s rapid 70 and Sohail Tanvir’s three wickets on his competition debut enabled Yorkshire Bank 40 champions Hampshire to overcome Derbyshire’s challenge comfortably at the Ageas Bowl.In reply to Hampshire’s formidable 277 for 8 after being put in, Derbyshire could only muster 231 for 8 as they stumbled to a 46-run defeat.Hampshire, who won both limited-overs trophies last season, have now won five of their six matches in Group B of the YB40 and at the halfway mark are in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.Michael Carberry led the way when Hampshire batted with 53 before he was caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Richard Johnson off David Wainwright. When Neil McKenzie was spectacularly caught by the diving Mark Turner, Hampshire were 137 for 5 in the 26th over and in need of inspiration. They got it from Wheater and Liam Dawson in a spectacular stand of 84 in nine overs for the sixth wicket until Dawson edged Jonathan Clare to Shivnarine Chanderpaul. But Wheater was by now in his stride, taking 21 in an over from Turner including two sixes and also hitting Clare for six on his way to his best score since joining Hampshire from Essex in the close season.Wainwright bowled Wheater sweeping in the penultimate over but the damage had been done as inexperienced Derbyshire lost control.Turner was punished for some short deliveries by conceding 75 from his eight overs but he also produced another brilliant catch to dismiss James Vince and ran out Jimmy Adams from backward point.Derbyshire started too slowly to threaten Hampshire’s dominance seriously. Paul Borrington and Chanderpaul put on 51 for the third wicket but were out in successive deliveries – Chanderpaul run out by Adams – and Hampshire easily shut out their toiling opponents.Wayne Madsen (43) and top scorer Dan Redfern, who made 53 from 48 balls, did their best to retaliate in a stand of 89 for the fifth but in 14 overs it was not quick enough.Redfern was last out at 218, bowled by Sohail with only three overs left and Hampshire already celebrating victory.All-rounder Sohail dismissed opener Chesney Hughes in his second over and returned to get rid of Clare and Redfern as Derbyshire tried to accelerate, finishing with figures of 3 for 42.
