RFC: Fans react to footage of McGregor

Fans of Glasgow Rangers have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which highlighted footage of an Allan McGregor save in the club’s recent Europa League fixture.

In the footage, which was originally posted by the UEFA Europa League Twitter account, a Slavia Prague corner is whipped in during their clash against Rangers, with one of the attacking players subsequently getting a powerful header on target only for McGregor to somehow claw the ball out from the bottom corner, helping his side leave the Czech Republic with a 1-1 draw.

The Rangers Twitter account then quote-tweeted the footage, adding the comment: “Perfect from every angle.”

And, in response, fans of Rangers flocked to have their say on McGregor’s remarkable save, with many claiming that the 39-year-old’s acrobatics are up there with any save a goalkeeper has ever made, while others simply heaped praise on the ‘keeper for his general level of performance so far this season.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, one supporter even requested the club announce an extended contract for the Ibrox hero.

So, what exactly did these Rangers fans have to say in reaction to the footage of Allan McGregor’s save?

“Announce new contract for McGregor.”

Real Madrid ratings: Karim Benzema FLOPS as Carlo Ancelotti's team blow final La Liga chance in loss to Barcelona

Real Madrid suffered a narrow Clasico loss to Barcelona that essentially ends their title hopes, with Karim Benzema enduring a night to forget.

Karim Benzema picked one hell of a night to put in perhaps his most toothless display of the season as Real Madrid were beaten 2-1 by Barcelona on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti's team fell 12 points behind their Clasico rivals as they surrendered an early lead to fall behind right at the death at Camp Nou.

Benzema was particularly weak as he was unable to get into space in the Barca box, while the evening would have been much worse for his side were it not for Thibaut Courtois, who was a rock in goal for most of the game.

GOAL rates Real Madrid's players from Camp Nou…

  • Getty

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Thibaut Courtois (8/10):

Had a fantastic game for the most part but could do little to keep out Sergi Roberto's equaliser.

    Dani Carvajal (6/10):

Looked shaky in spells but chipped in with an assist late on before the goal was chalked off for offside.

    Eder Militao (7/10):

Fought hard from start to finish as always.

    Antonio Rudiger (7/10):

Was strong in the battle against Robert Lewandowski, putting his pace to good use to ensure the Poland striker had no time on the ball.

    Nacho Fernandez (4/10):

Did not look good up against Raphinha. Let the winger get in behind him as he stood ball-watching one too many times.

  • Getty

    Midfield

    Luka Modric (6/10):

Some decent passes from the veteran but not a vintage performance as he was rightly taken off after 76 minutes.

    Eduardo Camavinga (7/10):

Plenty of movement to ensure he was available as a passing option and kept the ball circulating in midfield.

    Toni Kroos (4/10):

Turned too easily by Robert Lewandowski early on which set the tone as he always seemed behind the pace on and off the ball.

  • Getty

    Attack

    Fede Valverde (6/10):

Was quiet in the beginning and improved slightly when he moved to the midfield.

    Karim Benzema (4/10):

A toothless performance. He was unable to get many touches inside the Barcelona box as he was kept quiet throughout.

    Vinicius Junior (6/10):

Gave Madrid the lead against the run of play with a lucky deflection but was not much of a direct threat otherwise.

    Subs & Manager

    Ferland Mendy (6/10):

Took Nacho's place in the second half and was an easy upgrade.

    Rodrygo (6/10):

Came on for Kroos after the hour mark and his drive forward helped make the disallowed goal.

    Aurelien Tchouameni (6/10):

Looked lively as a late introduction, proving he should have come on earlier.

    Marco Asensio (7/10):

Made a quick impact when he snuck into space to score, but was upset as VAR ruled him offside.

    Dani Ceballos (6/10):

Played for the last 15 minutes and looked up for the fight immediately.

    Carlo Ancelotti (5/10):

His team were second best for a lot of the game, taking the lead against the run of play and ending up behind. The changes he made in the second half appeared to have turned the game in their favour but Asensio was offside for the goal, allowing Barca to go on to claim the winner.

Aribo ran the show for Rangers at Ibrox

Whilst Rangers enjoyed nearly complete domination over St Mirren at Ibrox on Saturday, the performance of all of Steven Gerrard’s players was extremely professional.

The front three were dangerous, as they have been all season, with Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos and Ianis Hagi all getting on the scoresheet for the Gers.

However, the decision to drop Joe Aribo back into midfield after he played on the right wing against Livingston in midweek proved to be an inspired one by Gerrard, as he completely ran the show at Ibrox.

As per SofaScore, the former Charlton Athletic man earned a solid 7.2 match rating for his display, which wasn’t quite on the level of Kent or Connor Goldson, but he was still an important part of Rangers’ victory.

During his time on the pitch, Aribo would have 125 touches of the ball, the most of any player on the pitch from both sides.

The Nigerian international, who reportedly earns £7,500 per week at Rangers, completed 94 of his 102 passes, resulting in a superb 92% pass accuracy during the game, which is a drastic improvement on the 84.5% pass accuracy he has averaged in the Premiership so far this season.

Whilst he didn’t score or assist, nearly every Rangers attack ran through him, as he was hugely involved throughout, whilst also managing one key pass from midfield. His 125 touches was the most of anyone on the pitch at Ibrox, per SofaScore.

It wasn’t just his attacking play which was impressive, however, as he also won all three of his aerial duels during the 90 minutes, as well as winning two tackles, which emphasises that he was just a class above the St Mirren midfielders at Ibrox.

So far this season, Aribo has averaged a superb 7.44 rating for his performances in the Premiership, having contributed six goals and four assists in 25 appearances – which is enough to see him rated as the second-best performer across the season. per WhoScored.

Therefore, the decision to sign him from Charlton in the summer of 2019 looks to have been a superb piece of business, as he has been vital to Rangers’ success so far this season.

And, in other news… Gerrard should unleash “big talent” at Rangers next season

No Bale, no problem! Winners & losers from LAFC's playoff win over Austin FC as Arango and Vela steal the show yet again

MLS' best regular season team is one step closer to achieving their ultimate goal

For all of their success on and off the field, MLS Cup has thus far eluded LAFC. They've made splashes, won trophies, created a culture that other clubs could only dream of.

But they haven't yet won the big one.

Well, they're now one step away as several of LAFC's stars stepped up in a big way to lift the club into its first MLS Cup final.

LAFC defeated upstarts Austin FC 3-0 at Banc of California Field on Sunday afternoon, solidifying their spot as one half of the MLS Cup final. That final will be played in their home stadium as the club will get a chance to seal its big moment in Los Angeles.

With Gareth Bale watching from the bench once again due to injury, Chicho Arango helped LAFC move one step closer to that moment on Sunday, scoring the opener in the first half. He was helped by Carlos Vela, who assisted the Colombian's finish before creating an own goal for LAFC's second.

By the time Kwadwo Opoku made it 3-0 in the 81st minute, reality had set in. LAFC took down yet another challenger in impressive fashion, making short work of an Austin FC team that had done their share of humbling throughout this year.

But this was LAFC's day and, next week, we'll find out if it's LAFC's year.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Chicho Arango

To think, just a few months ago, LAFC was reportedly willing to trade the Colombian star.

It seems crazy that they even entertained the thought because Arango is just so damn good.

The striker scored yet again on Sunday, flicking a header from a Vela corner to open the scoring. The goal was his second of the playoffs after his last-gasp winner against the Galaxy last week and the 18th MLS goal of the season for LAFC's leading scorer.

In the big moments, Arango continues to step up. Despite the presence of a superstar like Bale that always seemed destined to take his place, Arango continues to be undroppable.

For years, LAFC have been trying to find the guy to take them over the top, the star to add to the equation that can take them from MLS Cup contender to MLS Cup winner.

It's looking like that guy might just be Arango, LAFC's playoff superstar so far.

  • Getty

    LOSER: Sebastian Driussi

Sebastian Driussi is the face of a franchise, an MVP candidate, a legitimate star in MLS that can do everything a team wants and more.

But on this day, in this game, he was completely starved.

In the first half, the Argentine was limited to just 16 touches, the fewest of any half he's played in so far. Driussi was essentially invisible.

That's not totally his fault. LAFC absolutely strangled Austin FC. They outshot them, out possessed them and outplayed them. Driussi was never allowed to get into the game because LAFC never let it happen.

And so one of this year's best performers' season ended with a whimper. He scored 22 goals and provided seven assists during the regular season before adding three more in the club's first two playoff games. At his best, Driussi was unstoppable and one of the most fun players to watch in MLS.

What a season it was for Driussi in Austin as both the player and club showed that they belong in the upper echelon of MLS, even if it didn't look like it in this one-off game. It was a tough day at the office for a player that probably deserved a better ending to it all.

  • Getty

    WINNER: Carlos Vela

He may not be as dominant as he was during his first few seasons in MLS, but Vela still has the goods.

The Mexican star created both goals on the day from set pieces, with his first finding the head of Arango to open the scoring.

The second was a bit more fortunate. Vela's corner kick deflected off the head of Austin FC's Maxi Urruti, a lucky bounce for sure but they do say that you make your own luck.

And that's what Vela does: he makes things happen. He's done it in MLS for years. He's broken records, scored big goals, won big games. Now, he's one step closer to the trophy that has so far eluded him and this club.

Vela's numbers don't jump out at you like they once did, as LAFC's roster has filled out with stars all around him. But the Mexican winger is still so key to everything LAFC does.

The club's first superstar, its captain, is now one game away from winning the big one.

    LOSER: Maxi Urruti

    How unlucky can you get?

Urruti was tossed into the game in the 61st minute, with Josh Wolff looking to change the game by subbing in an experienced striker that can get goals. One minute later, Urruti was pulling the ball out of the goal after heading it home.

Unfortunately for him, though, it was the wrong net.

Urruti was helpless on Vela's corner as he deflected it back into his own net. It, ultimately, felt like the moment the game ended, when Austin FC's chances of yet another comeback dwindled away.

There are two types of own goals: the mistakes and the unfortunate. This was certainly more the latter, but regardless, it was deadly for Austin's MLS Cup hopes.

Leeds: Phillips discusses Rodrigo

It has been a difficult first campaign for Rodrigo at Leeds, and Kevin Phillips believes that the Spaniard could depart in the summer after links to Juventus.

What Phillips had to say about Rodrigo

Speaking to Football Insider about the player, Phillips said: “If Juventus are interested in signing Rodrigo I think Leeds would be tempted. It has not worked out. He has been injury prone so they might look to get him off their books. Leeds may just park that one and go for someone else.

“He has been non-existent this season which is a shame because we never really got to see him at his best. If they can do a deal at the end of the season I am sure that they will.”

Should the club part ways with the forward?

Rodrigo was a regular for Marcelo Bielsa’s team before his injury, as he had played in no fewer than 20 matches in total over all competitions in the 2020/21 term, scoring three goals and making one assist (Transfermarkt). To be a club record signing and only score three goals this campaign will worry not only the manager, but also supporters of the club.

He has recently been linked to Juventus and this could be a tempting offer for the forward as the Serie A side are typically a Champions League outfit and he would probably love to return to that competition.

That said, some players do take a little bit of time to settle into a new division, especially one that is physically demanding like the Premier League, so we feel Phillips may be jumping the gun a little bit by throwing the towel in on Rodrigo so soon.

Barcelona, Ronaldo, Pulisic and the winners and losers of the transfer window

It has been a dramatic summer across Europe as billions have been spent and clubs have scrambled to get deals done

So that’s it for another summer. The circus can stop, the rumours can slow and the football world can finally sit down and take a deep breath.

The transfer window is closed, for a few months at least. Managers now know which players they will be able to count on for the first part of the campaign, while supporters can line up new heroes – and villains.

In England, around £2billion (€2.3bn/$2.3bn) was spent on signings, a new record which makes a mockery of the idea, floated by some not so long ago, that the coronavirus pandemic would bring about a moment’s pause and force clubs to reconsider their approach to the transfer market.

Across Europe, however, the picture looks a little more bleak, as talent continues to drain away from Italy, Germany, Spain and France and towards the Premier League. How do these leagues hope to compete with a competition that is set to earn upwards of £10bn (€11.6bn/$11.6bn) in TV rights over the next three years alone?

With all that in mind, GOAL takes a look at the winners and losers from a dramatic window…

  • Getty

    Winner: Barcelona

Forget they did it, just for a moment. Instead, let’s focus on Barcelona have done in this window.

Strengthening an already-talented squad with the likes of Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen and Hector Bellerin is one thing, but adding Robert Lewandowski to the mix? No wonder Xavi has smiled his way through the opening weeks of the campaign.

Sure, there have been plenty of losers from the Catalans’ lever-powered dash through the market – Martin Braithwaite, for example, or Memphis Depay – but in purely footballing terms, Barca have managed to assemble one of the most exciting sides around.

    Somehow.

  • Getty

    Loser: Cristiano Ronaldo

This was not how Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream homecoming was supposed to play out.

The Portugal legend has spent the summer trying – and miserably failing – to secure a move away from Manchester United, having quickly discovered the Old Trafford grass is not quite as green as when he left in 2009.

All of Europe’s top clubs have been offered the chance to sign Ronaldo, but none were willing to take the plunge on a player who still knows where the net is, but who will be 38 in February and has shown himself not only to be a player around whom a cohesive tactical system is difficult to build, but who seems as though he creates division and uncertainty inside the dressing room with his behaviour.

United may well get some good moments out of him this season, but anyone who thinks his return to Manchester has been a success is deluding themselves.

  • Getty

    Winner: Nottingham Forest

It has been a remarkable couple of months at the City Ground, with the newly-promoted Premier League side bringing in no fewer than 21 new players, at a cost of more than £150m (€175m/$175m).

Those include the club-record signing of midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White from Wolves, a pair of Nigerian international forwards in Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis, goalkeeper Dean Henderson and England forward Jesse Lingard from Manchester United and, perhaps most eye-catching of all, the loan capture of Brazil left-back Renan Lodi from Atletico Madrid.

Whether such investment pays off remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure; manager Steve Cooper is going to have some major selection headaches in the coming weeks and months.

    Loser: Serie A

Matthijs De Ligt, Franck Kessie, Ivan Perisic, Fabian Ruiz, Dejan Kulusevski, Lorenzo Insigne, Cristian Romero, Dries Mertens, Alexis Sanchez, Kalidou Koulibaly, Giorgio Chiellini, Fernando Bernadeschi, Gianluca Scamacca, Aaron Hickey, Mikkel Damsgaard, Nahuel Molina, Remo Freuler, Cesare Casadei.

The list of talented players – young and old – to have left Italy this summer is a long one. Serie A had the best title race in Europe last season, but its biggest stars continue to jump ship, most of them seduced by the money on offer in the Premier League.

]New ones will emerge, no doubt, and the league should be ultra-competitive again this season, but it looks unlikely that we will see an Italian side competing for Champions League glory any time soon.

And how sad is that, given their history in the competition?

Liverpool contact David Carmo

Many Liverpool fans went wild as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano dropped a subtle hint regarding the Reds’ pursuit for Sporting Braga defender David Carmo.

Anfield Watch shared the news that Jurgen Klopp’s side were showing late interest in the 21-year-old, which was initially provided by Romano earlier on Monday, to which he responded with a cheeky winking emoji.

Carmo has made 36 appearances for the Liga NOS side since breaking into the first-team and picked up seven caps for Portugal at U20-level.

It is no secret that Liverpool have been hunting for fresh faces at the back after their injury crisis which has ruled out all four of their defensive options.

Unsurprisingly, supporters went crazy on social media following Romano’s subtle hint and made their feelings clear on social media, even despite a reported deal to sign Ozan Kabak from Schalke.

The wind, ash clouds, broken fax machines – football's 14 worst ever excuses

Jurgen Klopp pointed to atmospheric conditions after drawing with Everton – but he is far from the only person to make outlandish excuses in the sport

  • Getty Images

    1Just the fax

Rumours linking David de Gea to a Real Madrid move have been almost constant since he hit the big time at Man United. But the Reds have been equally insistent in fending off Real's interest, even when a transfer looked inevitable.

The closest De Gea came to moving was in 2015, when only a reported malfunctioning fax machine stopped the clubs from completing the paperwork on time on transfer deadline day.

Both sides blamed each other for what was reported officially as a "technical glitch", and more than three years down the line De Gea remains safely at Old Trafford.

  • Getty

    2Too many injuries?

Managers blaming their team's failings on a spate of unfortunate injuries is nothing new. But perhaps only Klopp has dared to use the opponent's physical issues to explain away a poor result.

Manchester United held Liverpool to a draw in February despite being forced into three first-half substitutions, something the German paradoxically believes played into their hands.

"Everyone saw at United we were confident and we were much better when all of United’s players were on the pitch but the game changed completely," he claimed after the match.

"The open game and we were better. It changed and we were still in charge and gave nothing away. That is important."

  • Getty Images

    3Hopping mad

Spain began the 2006 World Cup in style, destroying Ukraine 4-0 in their first match. But that heavy defeat was naturally no fault of the beaten team, who decided to blame a host of tiny amphibians who had croaked through the night outside their Potsdam hotel.

"Because of the frogs' croaking we hardly got a wink of sleep," defender Vladislav Vashchuk explained after the game. "We all agreed that we would take some sticks and go and hunt them."

Perhaps Vashchuk had a point, though. Once away from the noisy intruders results picked up immediately, as Ukraine battled through to the quarter-finals before eventually going out to winners Italy.

4Where have all the ball-boys gone?

When it comes to ball-boys, too few can be just as damaging to a team's chances as one who is a bad-luck omen. That is, according to Jose Mourinho.

"What I'm about to say is not a criticism, I'm just stating a fact: There were no ballboys in the second half," Mourinho griped in 2011 after his Real Madrid side fell victim to Barcelona in the Supercopa.

"This is something typical of small teams when experiencing difficulties."

El-Hadji Diouf, Asamoah Gyan & 15 World Cup one-hit wonders

Goal looks at the players who dazzled all too briefly on the biggest international stage

  • Getty

    Asamoah Gyan

Ghana were so very close in 2010. Had it not been for the truly despicable actions of Luis Suarez, Gyan and his team-mates would have become the very first African team ever to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. Gyan was central to their push, leading the line, scoring three goals – two were penalties – but his tournament ended in heartbreak, as Gyan hit the bar in the last-minute of their clash with Uruguay. His career never truly recovered.

  • Getty

    El-Hadji Diouf

Selected in the FIFA All-Star Team after the 2002 World Cup, Diouf was truly brilliant for Senegal in South Korea and Japan. After inspiring his country to a remarkable 1-0 win over France – Diouf set up Papa Bouba Diop’s winning goal – Diouf also laid on goals against Uruguay and Sweden. Ultimately, Senegal were knocked out by Turkey in the quarter-finals, and Diouf went on to become one of the most vilified figures in English football at Liverpool.

  • Getty

    Oleg Salenko

Prior to the 1994 World Cup, Salenko had not scored for Russia. He netted once from the penalty spot against Sweden, warming himself up rather nicely for an encounter with Cameroon. Nobody saw what was coming, but Salenko scored five times as Russia won 6-1. As a result, he shared the Golden Boot with Bulgaria’s Hristo Stoichkov, despite Russia failing to progress past the group stage. He never played for his country again, and retired at the age of 31 due to weight issues.

    Salif Diao

Along with El-Hadji Diouf, Diao was a key part of Senegal’s Earth-shattering win over France, and also scored in the later group stage clash with Denmark, though joy quickly turned sour as he was sent off for a high boot. His displays led to a move to Liverpool, but he was unable to replicate his international form at Anfield and quickly faded from the public consciousness.
