Manchester United: Fans react to Fabrizio Romano post

Reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Manchester United board are still backing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And a number of Red Devils supporters have been reacting to his post on social media.

United have struggled in recent weeks, losing to Young Boys in the Champions League, West Ham in the Carabao Cup and Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool man Didi Hamann has been the latest to share his prediction regarding the 48-year-old, believing it is only a matter of time until he is gone, but that doesn’t appear to be in the pipeline according to Romano.

Romano shared a link to his ‘Here We Go’ podcast on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon, sharing a number of topics that were discussed. One of which was on the United boss, to which he tweeted ‘Man Utd board still backing Solskjaer’.

West Brom fans show love for Dara O’Shea

A number of West Brom supporters have been showing their love for injured Albion ace Dara O’Shea following a social media update from the defender.

The Baggies have made a strong start to the season as they look to make a swift return to the Premier League following relegation in the spring.

Valerien Ismael’s side sit top of the Championship table after picking up 14 points from their opening six matches, and they look like genuine promotion contenders.

The biggest setback West Brom have suffered is a long-term injury to O’Shea, however, with the centre-back an ever-present in the league this season before being ruled out for several months following an injury on international duty recently.

On Monday, the Republic of Ireland defender posted on Instagram [shared via his club’s official Twitter account] to confirm that his surgery was complete as his recovery continues.

These Baggies supporters were quick to show their support for the 22-year-old on Twitter, with the defender hopefully returning stronger than ever and as quickly as possible given the nature of his injury.

Marco Silva drops Tom Cairney injury update

Fulham manager Marco Silva has dropped an update on Tom Cairney’s recovery from injury.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by West London Sport, the 44-year-old revealed that the attacking midfielder has been making decent progress in his recovery from a knee injury which has kept the 30-year-old sidelined since December.

Speaking about the current condition of the Scotland international, the Fulham manager said: “He made some progress. Not big, big progress to be honest, but he’s on the [training] pitch already. We need to be calm to see him 100% fit.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering the sheer amount of time for which Cairney has been sidelined, he will undoubtedly feel like a new signing for Fulham when he does eventually return to first team action, while seeing the 30-year-old in action at Craven Cottage once again will certainly have fans buzzing.

Indeed, Cairney proved to be a hugely important part of Fulham’s last promotion-winning campaign, scoring eight goals, providing three assists and creating six big chances over his 39 Championship appearances back in 2019/20, in addition to taking 1.1 shots and making 1.8 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £27k-per-week man earn an impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.12, ranking him as the club’s second-best player in the second tier in that campaign.

Although the player who Silva’s predecessor Scott Parker dubbed an “outstanding” talent looks unlikely to make a return before the next international break, it would appear a case of the sooner Cairney returns for Fulham the better, as the midfielder will undoubtedly strengthen their already healthy-looking promotion credentials even further.

Perraud disappointed on Saints debut

Southampton fell to a 3-1 defeat against Everton on the opening day of the new Premier League season after a second half collapse at Goodison Park.

Ralph Hasenhuttl handed debuts to Tino Livramento, Romain Perraud and Adam Armstrong, and the latter made a great start to his life as a Southampton player as he was found by Che Adams through on goal and clinically found the bottom corner to give the Saints a half-time lead.

However, as was so often the case last season, Southampton fell apart in the second half, with Richarlison taking advantage of some slack defending to equalise just a few moments after the restart, before Abdoulaye Doucoure’s screamer and Dominic Calvert Lewin’s scrappy goal sealed the points for Rafa Benitez’s side.

One man who unfortunately disappointed at Goodison Park was Perraud on what was his competitive debut for the Saints after a summer move from Stade Brest.

As per SofaScore, the Frenchman earned a poor 6.1/10 rating for his display, which was the joint-worst of any player to feature from both teams.

During his time on the pitch, the 23-year-old won only two of his seven duels, whilst he completed just one tackle, struggling to deal with Everton’s experienced right-hand side of Seamus Coleman and Andros Townsend.

Perhaps most worryingly, the young left-back struggled immensely with his passing, losing possession on 23 occasions, the most of any player in the game.

He also completed just 12 of his 22 passes, resulting in a 55% pass accuracy, a significant decrease on the 79.9% he averaged in Ligue 1 last season.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Considering that the defender was perhaps signed for his impressive attacking returns last season, as he managed three goals and seven assists in the French top-flight, Saints fans must be disappointed that he was so poor going forward today and will be hoping to see a lot more from him in future games.

Bowyer must unleash Aneke vs Fulham

After comfortably guiding his Birmingham City side to survival last season, and following an impressive summer transfer window, Lee Bowyer has managed to maintain the Blues’ fine form into the club’s 2021/22 Championship campaign – winning two, drawing one and losing one of their opening four league fixtures.

The 44-year-old has also guided his team through to the Carabao Cup second round, defeating Colchester United 1-0 in the first round two weeks ago, and the Blues face Fulham in that competition on Tuesday night.

With the competition perhaps not being a priority for Bowyer during a season in which the manager will undoubtedly be prioritising the club’s league campaign, the fixture will allow him to rotate his side in order to take a look at a couple of younger talents, as well as his first-team fringe players.

One such player who falls into the latter category is Chuks Aneke, the 28-year-old summer signing from Bowyer’s former employers Charlton Athletic.

Indeed, game-time has been limited for the £360k-rated forward at St Andrew’s so far this season, having made three substitute appearances in the Championship, over which he has scored one goal and averaged just 24 minutes on the pitch per game.

However, Aneke demonstrated over his 38 League One appearances for the Addicks last term that he could well deserve a shot from the off against Fulham, with the £5.4k-per-week marksman scoring 15 goals, providing two assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking 2.3 shots and making 0.6 key passes per match.

These returns saw the man who Bowyer himself dubbed an “immense” talent earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.03, ranking him as Charlton’s fifth-best performer in the third tier last season.

As such, it would certainly appear that, when he is given the opportunity, the forward can bring considerable returns to his club.

With not much at stake in a cup clash with the Championship table-toppers, it would seem highly advisable for Bowyer to give Aneke a chance from the off. His presence in and around the box could well terrify the Cottagers’ backline, as well as affording the manager a chance to see what the 28-year-old is capable of producing against a challenging opponent.

Spurs have eyes for Damsgaard

According to journalists Jack Rosser and Dan Kilpatrick of The Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur and Fabio Paratici now have eyes for Denmark sensation Mikkel Damsgaard after the alleged signing of Cristian Romero.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing forward additions?

Much has been made of Tottenham’s need for defensive reinforcements with football.london reporting they would ideally like to sign two new centre-backs this summer.

As well as Cristian Romero, who Spurs have now signed according to reliable reports, they have been linked with the likes of Conor Coady and Takehiro Tomiyasu recently.

However, Tottenham also need to strengthen in the attacking areas and have their sights set on doing so after completing the Romero agreement.

The Latest: Tottenham now have eyes for Damsgaard…

As per Rosser, who shared his article with Kilpatrick in The Evening Standard on Twitter, Spurs are looking at Sampdoria ace Damsgaard as another possible new signing this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“Tottenham looking at more creative players after Romero signing,” Rosser explained on social media.

“Mikkel Damsgaard and Noni Madueke two they’re keeping an eye on but would likely have to sell first.”

Indeed, as explained in their piece, Tottenham are interested in signing the 21-year-old this summer but his price tag of €50 million (£42.5m) means players will have to go out the door first.

The Verdict: Would be incredible…

The attacking midfielder is, arguably, one of the most promising youngsters in world football going by his exploits at the Euros and praise at domestic level.

Damsgaard’s sensational free-kick against England in the semi-finals at Wembley was a showcase of his real ability and it’s little wonder Sampdoria have slapped a hefty price tag on his head.

He has also been called a ‘very exciting player’ by Italian football expert Conor Clancy (via This is Futbol), and if Spurs can offload deadwood to make up his £42.5m asking price, we strongly believe Spurs should make a move.

Pundit still confused why Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho

More than four months later, Steve Howey is still confused as to why Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho.

Despite being less than seven days away from the Carabao Cup final, the Portuguese lost his job following some wretched form domestically.

When Mourinho was sacked, Tottenham were five points adrift of the Champions League places with just six games remaining, whilst they’d recently been embarrassingly knocked out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb, which was their most likely route back into Europe’s elite competition.

Spurs ended up narrowly losing the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City with interim manager Ryan Mason in charge, which ensured their 12-year wait for a major trophy painfully continued.

Mourinho has since been replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo, who’ll not only be hoping to get Tottenham back into the Champions League, but is the man tasked with attempting to finally bring silverware to north London.

But Howey exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t understand why Mourinho was moved on in the first place:

“I’m still scratching my head how you’ve got a serial manager that wins trophies in Mourinho, and you sack him on pretty much the day of the final, it’s mind-blowing.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Dwight McNeil update

Aston Villa are reportedly frontrunners in their pursuit of Burnley talisman Dwight McNeil, with Everton also keen on his services [Liverpool Echo].

Enjoying a productive 2020/21 campaign, the 21-year-old registered seven goal contributions from 40 appearances; two goals and five assists [Transfermarkt].

Now garnering attention from bigger Premier League sides, he could have a decision to make over his Turf Moor future this summer.

The Villains are thought to be in pole position to acquire the wide-man, however Everton are also in the hunt for natural wingers who would cost around £25 million [Liverpool Echo].

Having already signed free agent Ashley Young alongside creator Emiliano Buendia for a club record fee, bringing in McNeil would undoubtedly create a sense of excitement at Villa Park [Transfermarkt].

In light of this, loads of Aston Villa diehards took to Twitter to voice their delight at recent developments.

Aston Villa fans react:

Pundit expects Wilfried Zaha to stay at Crystal Palace

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has told Football FanCast that he’d be surprised to see Wilfried Zaha leave Crystal Palace this summer.

Palace’s talisman, who scored a career-best 11 Premier League goals last term and is already off the mark in pre-season, was the subject of interest from Tottenham and Everton earlier this summer.

Zaha has been linked away from the club in each of the previous two years, and in an interview with The Times, the 28-year-old once more expressed his desire to leave the Selhurst Park outfit this window.

With just two years remaining on his contract, Zaha could be available to sign at a cut-price, but has already knuckled down since the arrival of Patrick Vieira and looks likely to get a move.

The Eagles boss has been a busy man in the transfer window, making three impressive signings, including Joachim Andersen from Lyon.

And whilst Palace are highly unlikely to be challenging for a European place next season, Bridge reckons that the arrival of a new ambitious manager with fresh faces could meet Zaha’s demands.

He told FFC:

“I’d be very surprised to see Zaha leave, he would probably like a new challenge, but at the same time, he’s kind of got one.

“He’s got Patrick Vieira coming in, Joachim Andersen has just joined from Lyon, Olise, they want to sign more players.”

Manchester United transfer news

Manchester United reportedly want to make two further summer signings after they secure the signature of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Duncan Castles, the Red Devils are lining up a central midfielder and a right-back after the proposed arrival of Varane.

United recently announced the purchase of Jadon Sancho in a £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be intent on making further additions to his first-team squad.

Fans will be delighted

Speaking on a recent episode of the Transfer Window podcast, Castles disclosed where the Old Trafford outfit are looking to strengthen over the coming months.

“They have Sancho secured with Dortmund, apart from fine details, and ready to start pre-season as soon as he can after England’s European Championship campaign,” he said.

“Solskjaer’s been provided with an incredible degree of attacking resource. He’s been provided with a huge amount of money to improve in defence.

“He has a midfield where a player like Donny van de Beek, who was wanted by Real Madrid, is barely used last season. (He) still wants other reinforcements in midfield and right-back as well,” added Castles.

Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has been strongly linked with a move to United in recent days, while Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier is thought to on Solskjaer’s wish list for the right-back position.

It remains to be seen whether the 20-time English champions can secure their first-choice transfer targets ahead of the upcoming campaign, but news that they’re targeting three more signings will surely delight the club’s supporters.

The Red Devils have undoubtedly made progress under their Norwegian boss, securing consecutive top-four finishes since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement under his tutelage, but they’re also enduring their longest trophy drought in over 30 years.

Signing star names such as Sancho, Varane and Camavinga will bring an added pressure to the red half of Manchester next season, and the pressure to secure some silverware will be much greater than in recent campaigns.

And, in other news…Concerning update emerges over MUFC’s pursuit of £38.5m “leader”, Ole may be gutted
