Charlton set to sign Stockley

A major update has emerged in Charlton’s reported transfer pursuit of Preston North End centre-forward Jayden Stockley.

What’s the talk?

According to Hampshire Live, Stockley has decided to sign for Nigel Adkins’ Charlton. The striker spent the second half of last season on loan to Charlton and is now set to return to The Valley for a second spell.

The report claims that Portsmouth had agreed a fee with Preston for the attacker, but Charlton are now in pole position to land Stockley on a permanent deal in the coming weeks. Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Ipswich are also named as teams who have been interested in Stockley.

Charlton appear to have beaten off competition from Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Sunderland and Ipswich, who could all be rivals for the Addicks in the promotion race next season. The sought-after attacker, Stockley, has seemingly chosen Charlton ahead of the others and may get the chance to explain his decision if the deal is officially announced this week, as expected.

Fans will love it

Charlton fans will love this latest update on the race to sign Stockley. The Preston man enjoyed a successful loan spell at The Valley and Charlton fans could now get a chance to see him play for the club in person if supporters are allowed back in grounds from the start of next season in League One, as expected.

This report suggests that Charlton fans will get that chance and Adkins could get a major boost to his squad heading into the 2021/22 campaign, as Stockley was exceptional for the club during his loan spell.

The £5.1k-per-week ace averaged a sublime WhoScored rating of 7.41 in League One during his loan spell as he scored eight and assisted two goals. This shows that he was able to perform to a consistently high level and that he suited Adkins’ style of play, which may be why he wants to come back to the club for a second spell instead of sealing a transfer to Pompey.

He also won an unbelievable 9.8 aerial battles per game, as he was able to provide a focal point for the Addicks at the top end of the pitch.

Therefore, Stockley signing for Charlton on a permanent deal should be a massive boost for Adkins. He has proven that he is a top-quality player at League One level and understands what Adkins wants from his number nine, which means that he should not need any time to settle in.

Stockley could arrive for pre-season and hit the ground running as he will already know everyone at the club and will not need a period of adaptation that other potential signings may need. This is why fans will surely love this deal, as they know that a proven, quality addition is coming through the door.

Sunderland journo on O’Nien v Rotherham

Sunderland journalist Philip West was left slamming the display of Luke O’Nien in their 1-1 draw at home to Rotherham United in League One on Tuesday.

The Lowdown: Vital point?

It is safe to say that the Black Cats were not at their best at the Stadium of Light, but grabbed themselves what could be a vital point in their hopes of securing a play-off place.

A Michael Ihiekwe own goal in the 88th minute spared their blushes after the central defender had given the visitors the lead early in the first half, and that point keeps the Black Cats in the top six… just.

The Latest: O’Nien slammed

Taking to Twitter, West slammed a few of the performances from the Wearside club, including O’Nien’s:

“Too many of our players are having an off-night here. Matete went into his shell after the yellow, O’Nien has been poor, and Broadhead has been neutralised.”

The Verdict: Harsh

The criticism of O’Nien seems harsh as he was one of SAFC’s better players on the night.

Yes, he was guilty of giving possession away no fewer than 15 times in total, and also made two fouls, no dribbles or key passes (SofaScore), but the central midfield player at least put a shift in for his team and improved as the game went on.

O’Nien won 11 individual duels, more than anyone else on the pitch, and also recorded two tackles, one clearance and interception, while he himself was fouled five times, again more than any other player, as SofaScore gave him a respectable 6.9/10 overall rating.

Nonetheless, he looks to have secured his starting place as Alex Neil’s side face Morecambe away from home on the final day.

West Ham have hit jackpot with Coufal

A lot of West Ham United’s success on the pitch this season has to be attributed to their moves in the transfer market.

The Irons narrowly avoided relegation with one game to go last season after David Moyes was employed to pull off a great escape.

Things are vastly different now – the East London outfit occupies fifth place in the Premier League, just three points behind Chelsea in the race for a place in the Champions League.

This drastic turnaround has been down to Moyes, of course, but GSB deserve plenty of credit too as they provided him with several new signings and did so again in January, clinching the sensational Jesse Lingard on loan.

There was uproar when the club sold Grady Diangana and the lack of a replacement for Sebastian Haller hasn’t been ideal, though still, it’s their backing that has contributed to the fruitful returns of this campaign.

One name signed in the summer has arguably been one of their player’s of the season – Vladimir Coufal.

West Ham defeated Burnley on Monday Night Football earlier this week, and the Czech Republic right-back left Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher in awe (4th May, 22:24pm).

“I think he’s been one of the signings of the season,” claimed the former Liverpool centre-back. “We talk about [Tomas] Soucek, but Coufal whether it’s right wing-back or right full-back at different times, he’s just one of those players that’s 7/10 minimum every time you watch him play. He’s the type of player you’d love to play with him. A manager’s dream, never injured, he’s there week in week out.”

Indeed, the 13-cap international has been a revelation along that right-flank – immensely contributing in a defensive nature, as well as getting up the pitch to be a tricky threat with his crosses into the box.

As per WhoScored, Coufal ranks amongst the Hammers’ five best performers with an average rating of 6.97. Only the likes of Declan Rice, Tomas Soucek, Michail Antonio and Lingard are above him currently.

The 28-year-old brute tops the charts for tackles per game (2.4) and isn’t too far behind his teammates for interceptions per game (1.3) either, which only emphasises just how solid he’s been at the back.

Further ahead, Coufal has delivered a whopping six assists from right-back, a feat only bettered by Aaron Cresswell (seven). The same goes for key passes per game, too, with the former Slavia Prague man just 0.1 behind the Englishman in terms of creativity, via WhoScored.

It is no wonder Moyes dubbed his summer signing “unbelievable” back in February.

Considering Coufal cost the club just £5.5m and is only earning around £35k-per-week at the London Stadium, the industrious beast has been a revelation and a massive bargain for the Irons.

Now valued at €20m (£18m) by CIES Football Observatory, you would have to argue that the Czech gem has been one of West Ham’s, if not the Premier League’s, top stars this term.

The Hammers have certainly hit the jackpot and are in dreamland here. You won’t find better value for money than what they have achieved with Coufal.

Everton: Gilmour reveals Dele breakthrough

Everton have made a breakthrough in talks regarding a deal to bring Dele Alli to Goodison Park on transfer deadline day.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent claim made by Paul Gilmour, with the reporter revealing on Sky Sports News (15:50) that Frank Lampard’s side are now in extremely advanced talks with Tottenham Hotspur regarding a last-gasp deal to sign the 25-year-old midfielder.

Speaking about the deal, Gilmour said: “Things moving very quickly. Talks between Everton and Tottenham. We are told a breakthrough has been made and even a medical has been booked. Two and a half year deal. Sources telling us this is looking good for Dele Alli to make a permanent move. Frank Lampard, we are also being told, a key factor in this deal going through.”

Major coup

While it is true that Dele has been in far from his best form in recent seasons, it is undeniable that the former England international is nevertheless a player who possesses a considerable amount of ability.

Indeed, the £22.5m-rated man burst onto the Premier League scene following his £5.97m move to Spurs from Milton Keynes Dons back in 2015, scoring ten goals and registering nine assists over 33 league outings in his debut campaign, before following this up with returns of 19 goals and nine assists over his 36 top-flight fixtures in 2016/17, as well as nine goals and 11 assists over 36 appearances in 2017/18.

As such, with Lampard currently lacking any natural option in attacking midfield, should the 43-year-old believe that he can help the £100k-per-week number 10 refind this form following a switch to Everton, the signing of the forward could prove to be a major coup for Everton – as a fit and firing Dele has already proven that he can be one of the most exciting players in the top flight of English football.

Ex-MCFC man makes Kane v Haaland claim

Former Manchester City star Michael Ball has told Football FanCast that the club are more likely to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund than Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur.

The club have been heavily linked with both strikers in recent days and weeks.

Sky Sports reports that Kane has asked Spurs to leave this summer amid interest from City, Manchester United, and Chelsea.

It would be immensely expensive to sign the England captain this summer, given that he has three years left to run on his contract.

Still, City would surely have the financial resources required to sign Kane should they want to.

However, Ball believes that a deal for Haaland is more realistic.

The Borussia Dortmund striker is just 20, while Kane will turn 28 later this year, and he has scored a staggering 39 goals in 40 games thus far this season, with 22 of those coming in 2021.

As such, Ball believes Haaland, most realistically linked with the club by Goal, would be a more realistic purchase in the coming transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “Brilliant choice to have as a manager, if your club can go ‘which one do you want’, but Man City have got the resources, but realistically, I probably see Haaland happening more than Kane.”

Southampton: Cagliari interested in Saints midfielder Mario Lemina

Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina has been linked with a move to Serie A outfit Cagliari [Gianluca Di Mario via Southern Daily Echo].

The Lowdown: Exits aplenty as Southampton prepare for 2021/22

Looking ahead to 2021/22, many Saints fans will be intrigued to see how Austrian boss Ralph Hasenhuttl improves his squad, and that may well begin with selling underperforming players before moving onto rebuilding.

Facing multiple senior departures already this summer, Ryan Bertrand, Angus Gunn and Wesley Hoedt have all left St Mary’s [Transfermarkt].

Now, the South Coast club could be set for further exit following recent reports.

The Latest: Cagliari in for Lemina according to reports

Presently speaking, Italian top-flight side Cagliari are said to be looking at a swoop for Gabonese midfielder Lemina ahead of the new season [Southern Daily Echo].

Last month, Southampton were allegedly looking to recoup around £4 million for the 27-year-old, who arrived in 2017 from Juventus for £18.1 million [Southern Daily Echo].

Newcastle United were also previously keen on his services, however the move has since ground to a halt due to the player’s age [Daily Mail].

The Verdict: Lemina’s ship has sailed

Evaluating the situation, it is probably best that Lemina moves on to pastures new after falling out of favour under Hassenhuttl in recent times.

In 2020/21, the Libreville-born anchor man spent the campaign with then divisional rivals Fulham, notching two goal contributions in 28 fixtures for the West Londoners; one goal and one assist [Transfermarkt]. He has also spent time on loan at Galatasaray [BBC].

Despite suffering relegation during his time with the Cottagers, he made an impression in the middle of the park as an enforcer, averaging 2.2 tackles per 90 minutes across the campaign [WhoScored].

Once labelled as a ‘top-four player’ by pundit Garth Crooks, he certainly has the ability to flourish within an ideal footballing environment given the chance [Saints Marching], but it is clearly not going to happen at St. Mary’s

A summer sale is likely the best outcome for both club and player – could Cagliari be the side to make it happen?

In other news, Southampton fans rage at an update on a key player.

Manchester United transfer news

Manchester United reportedly want to make two further summer signings after they secure the signature of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Duncan Castles, the Red Devils are lining up a central midfielder and a right-back after the proposed arrival of Varane.

United recently announced the purchase of Jadon Sancho in a £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be intent on making further additions to his first-team squad.

Fans will be delighted

Speaking on a recent episode of the Transfer Window podcast, Castles disclosed where the Old Trafford outfit are looking to strengthen over the coming months.

“They have Sancho secured with Dortmund, apart from fine details, and ready to start pre-season as soon as he can after England’s European Championship campaign,” he said.

“Solskjaer’s been provided with an incredible degree of attacking resource. He’s been provided with a huge amount of money to improve in defence.

“He has a midfield where a player like Donny van de Beek, who was wanted by Real Madrid, is barely used last season. (He) still wants other reinforcements in midfield and right-back as well,” added Castles.

Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga has been strongly linked with a move to United in recent days, while Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier is thought to on Solskjaer’s wish list for the right-back position.

It remains to be seen whether the 20-time English champions can secure their first-choice transfer targets ahead of the upcoming campaign, but news that they’re targeting three more signings will surely delight the club’s supporters.

The Red Devils have undoubtedly made progress under their Norwegian boss, securing consecutive top-four finishes since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement under his tutelage, but they’re also enduring their longest trophy drought in over 30 years.

Signing star names such as Sancho, Varane and Camavinga will bring an added pressure to the red half of Manchester next season, and the pressure to secure some silverware will be much greater than in recent campaigns.

Leeds battling London duo for Raul De Tomas

Leeds United are reportedly battling with two other Premier League clubs to acquire the services of Espanyol forward Raul de Tomas.

The Lowdown: De Tomas shines for Espanyol

The 27-year-old has made a flying start to the season, scoring six goals and registering two assists for Espanyol in 11 La Liga appearances.

The former Real Madrid marksman has an impressive overall record for his current club, netting 34 times in just 64 matches. De Tomas’ form could eventually see him snapped up by another club and it appears as though Leeds could be a potential destination.

The Latest: Leeds keen on De Tomas

According to Fichajes, the Whites are eyeing up a move for the €45m-valued (£38m) attacker, along with Premier League rivals West Ham and Tottenham.

His current Espanyol deal runs until the summer of 2026, though, so it is unlikely that Leeds will be able to sign him on the cheap.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-22/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Would be an excellent addition

De Tomas could be an ideal addition for Leeds at a time when Patrick Bamford’s absence has led to a lack of firepower, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side scoring just 10 times in as many Premier League games this season.

At 27, the Spaniard has the experience to come straight in and make an immediate impact, providing competition for Bamford and offering some much-needed squad depth at a time when the Whites are contending with several injuries.

There is also no guarantee that the ex-Chelsea ace will necessarily perform at last season’s level again, so De Tomas could even be considered a long-term upgrade given his current performances.

Spurs have eyes for Damsgaard

According to journalists Jack Rosser and Dan Kilpatrick of The Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur and Fabio Paratici now have eyes for Denmark sensation Mikkel Damsgaard after the alleged signing of Cristian Romero.

The Lowdown: Spurs eyeing forward additions?

Much has been made of Tottenham’s need for defensive reinforcements with football.london reporting they would ideally like to sign two new centre-backs this summer.

As well as Cristian Romero, who Spurs have now signed according to reliable reports, they have been linked with the likes of Conor Coady and Takehiro Tomiyasu recently.

However, Tottenham also need to strengthen in the attacking areas and have their sights set on doing so after completing the Romero agreement.

The Latest: Tottenham now have eyes for Damsgaard…

As per Rosser, who shared his article with Kilpatrick in The Evening Standard on Twitter, Spurs are looking at Sampdoria ace Damsgaard as another possible new signing this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“Tottenham looking at more creative players after Romero signing,” Rosser explained on social media.

“Mikkel Damsgaard and Noni Madueke two they’re keeping an eye on but would likely have to sell first.”

Indeed, as explained in their piece, Tottenham are interested in signing the 21-year-old this summer but his price tag of €50 million (£42.5m) means players will have to go out the door first.

The Verdict: Would be incredible…

The attacking midfielder is, arguably, one of the most promising youngsters in world football going by his exploits at the Euros and praise at domestic level.

Damsgaard’s sensational free-kick against England in the semi-finals at Wembley was a showcase of his real ability and it’s little wonder Sampdoria have slapped a hefty price tag on his head.

He has also been called a ‘very exciting player’ by Italian football expert Conor Clancy (via This is Futbol), and if Spurs can offload deadwood to make up his £42.5m asking price, we strongly believe Spurs should make a move.

Wolves transfer update on Caleta-Car

A reason has been revealed as to why Wolves did not end up signing Duje Caleta-Car during the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Bid made

As per L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), the Midlands club were keen to sign Caleta-Car on Transfer Deadline Day, and put in a bid of €18m (£15.5m) to Marseille for his signature.

However, a deal never materialised in the end, and the central defender has ended up staying at the Ligue 1 side.

The Latest: No deal

According to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), Caleta-Car was not excited by a move to England, as his partner had given birth to their first child just last week.

Marseille president Pablo Longoria tried to find a way to sell the Croatia international, and received another offer from Valencia, but he was not interested in a move to Spain either.

The Verdict: Shame

It is a shame that the Molineux faithful missed out on signing Caleta-Car, as he would have given them that extra bit of quality in their backline.

Described as a ‘quality’ player by his centre-back partner Alvaro Gonzalez back in November, the £22.5m-rated ace was such a key player for his side in Ligue 1 in the 2020/21 season, winning no fewer than 3.7 of his duels per game, while he also averaged 3.9 clearances and 1.3 interceptions per match, keeping five clean sheets in the process (Sofascore).

Standing at a mammoth six-foot-four-inches tall, the 24-year-old would have certainly given Bruno Lage’s team a threat in both boxes, but now they may have to wait until January before they can try to sign him again.
