MLB Announces Matchup for 2026 Field of Dreams Game

MLB will host a Field of Dreams game for the third time in history next season. On Sunday, the Twins and the Phillies were announced as the two teams traveling to Dyersville, Iowa in 2026. Minnesota will serve as the home team.

The exact date hasn't been announced, but we will know on Tuesday, Aug. 26, when the rest of the 2026 MLB schedule is released. The previous two games took place in mid-August.

The first MLB matchup at the Field of Dreams in Iowa, where the iconic 1989 movie with the same name took place, was back in 2021 between the Yankees and the White Sox. The game was memorable for many reasons, but it's hard to forget watching the players from both teams walk out of the cornstalks in the field, similarly to how the players do so in the movie.

The second MLB game in Dyersville occurred in 2022 between the Cubs and the Reds. There hasn't been a game played at the Field of Dreams since, so next year's matchup will end a four-year drought. In that span, the grounds were sold to new owners and were under construction for the addition of new Little League fields.

India's spin quartet pulls the strings in dominant display

Kuldeep, Jadeja, Axar and Varun don’t so much spin a web as represent a 4D threat to India’s opponents

Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Mar-20251:31

Kumble: ‘Kuldeep doesn’t look for the surface to help him’

There is no relent. With two you could maybe manage. With three it was already a minefield (ask Bangladesh, or Pakistan). Four? Hah! On this worn square? Yah, good luck.Eke out your little singles here, squeeze out an edged four there, you can hit out and maybe nail one to the boundary, but you know you’ve taken a risk, and how long are you really going to be that brave for? And anyway, there are bowling changes that can be rung, new fields that can be employed, a whole new set of problems for you to solve next over. Two of India’s spinners have stock balls that turn away from the right-hand batter. Two of them are difficult to pick. Two of them can bowl in the powerplay. Two are effective at the death. In each of those four considerations, a different combination is represented.Related

  • Why Axar Patel at No. 5 has been a good idea for India

  • Rohit, Rahul, spinners lead India to third Champions Trophy title

  • KL Rahul: 'I was s****ing myself at the end'

  • Kohli: India ready to take on the world for the next eight years

  • Stats – Four drops, a spin strangle, and 15 tosses lost in a row

Try to graphically represent the cricketing skills of Ravindra Jadeja (turns ball away from right-hand batter), Axar Patel (can bowl in powerplay/turns the ball away from right-hand batter), Kuldeep Yadav (difficult to pick/effective at the death), and Varun Chakravarthy (difficult to pick/can bowl in powerplay/effective at the death), try to chart their synergies, permutations, and versatility, and what you end up with is less Venn diagram, more three-dimensional quadruple-helix. Like intertwined DNA strands as imagined by a surrealist (MC Escher more than Picasso). It’s often said of spinners that they string up batting orders in their webs. This is like a web, intersecting with another web, layered on to two more webs.Against New Zealand, Jadeja, the most conventional of India’s spinners, delivered the most conventional overs, almost by rote – a factory worker on a production line. He punched in at the start of the 19th, bowled nine unchanged through the middle period, trapped a batter sweeping, rushed through his deliveries to get India’s over rate up, fired in some rocket throws from the outfield in between that New Zealand’s batters dared not take on, and finished with figures of 1 for 30. In the break room of this factory, beneath rows of framed photographs of Jadeja, the little metal straps read “Employee of the Month”. It was he who hit the winning runs, his presence all the way down at No. 8 empowering the batters above him to play more aggressively right through the tournament.ESPNcricinfo LtdBut others had laid the groundwork for Jadeja’s middle-overs shift. Kuldeep, a bamboozler at the top of the innings, a pragmatist at the tail, had ripped a googly first ball to end Rachin Ravindra’s little rampage. Next over, he beat Kane Williamson in the air, which few spinners can ever claim to have done, and took a simple return catch – the ball also perhaps having stopped on the pitch. In his first seven balls, Kuldeep had removed New Zealand’s semi-final centurions. There is arguably no more definitive phase of the match than this. That India have barely missed Jasprit Bumrah in this tournament at the death is also partly down to Kuldeep. In this match, he bowled four overs between the 39th and 47th of the innings. Those cost him only 15 runs – one boundary conceded across 24 balls.Varun was once an aspiring architect, but now in his own telling, bowls one delivery that “goes left” one that “goes right” and another that “goes straight”. The difficulty for a batter is figuring out which is which. Like a Bangalore tech start-up that has devised a hugely profitable algorithm, Varun guards his USP hawkishly, Rohit Sharma stating at the start of this tournament that he rarely ever bowls his variations to the India batters in the nets (there’s an IPL to think about). In this match, Rohit used him in bursts, three overs in the powerplay, four overs in the middle, three overs in the late middle/early death.A legbreak in the powerplay got Will Young, but the crucial strike was against Glenn Phillips in the 38th over, when Phillips was threatening to give serious energy to New Zealand’s final burst. That googly was 92kph. Phillips rolled the dice on which direction it would turn, and picked wrong. It turned in to him, and took out his stumps.Varun Chakravarthy kept New Zealand guessing with his variations•Associated PressAxar, long-legged, wingspan of an albatross, has sniped around the edges of the other three this tournament, picking up five wickets. Crucially, he has also presented the challenge of extra bounce to batters, given his high release point. He and Jadeja were the co-squeezers, his economy rate of 3.62 in the final substantially better even than his tournament economy rate of 4.35 on a track which, in the first innings, took only mild turn. For Axar alone of the quartet, bowling is increasingly secondary. Against New Zealand, India’s only worthy opposition, he produced a 42 in the group match, and an important 29 off 40 in the final. No portion of India’s campaign has wriggled with as much life as Varun’s nine wickets, from just three matches. Of India’s 47 total Champions Trophy wickets, 26 have belonged to their spinners. In the final, they took five of the seven to go down, and had a combined economy rate of 3.79 across their 38 overs. Their total effect has been extraordinary. There is an obvious comparison to make here, to that legendary 1960s and 1970s quartet of Bishan Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekar and S Venkataraghavan. As with most legends, some of the history is imagined – those four spinners only played a single Test together. These four now have three entries on the ODI ledger, and have written their names across a major tournament, imbuing India’s knockouts performances with dynamism, high skill, consistency, and barely relenting control. Virat Kohli may have led chases, Shreyas Iyer might have brought heft to the middle order, and Rohit’s scintillating start was vital in the title match. But if you’re looking for India’s Champions Trophy engine room, it is their two left-arm spinners, their left-arm wristspinner, and their mystery bowler. Cricket has never seen anything like them.

Giants Announcer Had Great Quip About His Voice After Walk-Off Inside-the-Park HR

The San Francisco Giants will never forget their 51st victory of the 2025 MLB season as it came in the most dramatic of ways courtesy of Patrick Bailey's three-run inside-the-park walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at Oracle Park.

With one out and runners at first and third, Bailey pouned a ball to right field that hit the brick wall and then bounced right past Phillies center fielder Brandon Marsh. Bailey was able to circle the bases and made it home with ease to score the winning run and send the home crowd and his teammates into hysterics.

Giants announcer Duane Kuiper had an excellent call of the thrilling play, yelling "Bailey's on the move!" a few times as it became clear that was happening. His voice seemed to give out as Bailey crossed the plate, leading to a great quip from Kuiper as he said his voice didn't see this wild play coming.

Here's his call:

What a way to win a game.

Even Clayton Kershaw Was Surprised by 'Weird But Cool' All-Star Game Legend Pick

Three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw is headed to the All-Star Game for the 11th time in his decorated career, as MLB commissioner Rob Manfred included the longtime Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander on the roster as a "Legend Pick" for all that he's achieved in a likely Hall of Fame career.

And while Kershaw is certainly grateful for the honor, he also doesn't necessarily believe it was deserved on his part.

"Obviously, I don’t deserve to get to go this season, haven’t pitched very much," Kershaw, who has made just nine starts this season, quipped according to the . "I don’t know if Doc [Dodgers manager Dave Roberts] was going for the surprise factor or not. But I had no idea until he said it.

"You never take for granted getting to go to an All-Star Game, regardless of the circumstances. At the end of the day, it’s weird but cool, so I’m just going to enjoy it."

The 37-year-old didn't pitch until May 17 this season after undergoing surgeries on his knee and toe following the Dodgers' World Series victory this past season. Kershaw is 4–0 with a 3.43 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings pitched.

Kershaw, who on July 2 became just the 20th pitcher to record 3,000 career strikeouts, joins retired sluggers Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera as players to receive the "Legend Pick" as an entry into the All-Star Game.

Pujols and Cabrera both went on to retire that year. Kershaw has not specified exactly when his retirement will occur, but has made clear that he will spend the rest of his career with the only organization he's ever known.

"The Dodgers have stuck with me," Kershaw told reporters after notching his 3,000th career strikeout. "It hasn't been all roses. I'm super grateful now. To say that I got to spend my whole career here, and I will spend my whole career here. I have a lot more appreciation."

The MLB All-Star Game is on July 15 at 8 p.m. ET at Truist Park in Atlanta.

Forget Kudus: Spurs have already signed Frank's new Mbeumo-type player

After becoming synonymous with Brentford, Thomas Frank would have been forgiven somewhat if he had teething problems adjusting to the Tottenham Hotspur hot-seat.

Indeed, the much-loved Dane was a mainstay for the Bees for seven years. Yet, he has instantly hit the ground running as Ange Postecoglou’s replacement in North London.

So far, only one defeat has come his way from 11 games at the Spurs helm, leading to Frank guiding his new team all the way up to third spot in the early league standings, before the international break came into play.

One of Frank’s men so far has, of course, been Mohammed Kudus, who has spearheaded plenty of points so far, including the victory over Leeds prior to the break.

Why Kudus looks like one of Spurs' best players

Amazingly, Frank wasn’t the only coup Spurs managed to pull off this summer when directly stealing from some of their London neighbours.

Much to the anger of West Ham supporters, the tricky forward excited the London Stadium at West Ham for Tottenham, moving across the capital in a deal worth £55m, a price tag that made him the club’s fourth-highest transfer of all time.

While West Ham loiter towards the bottom of the division, Kudus has become an instant hit donning Spurs white near the top of the competitive league, with one goal and five assists already falling into his lap from ten contests.

Already, that £55m looks to be money well spent, with Wayne Rooney even hailing the purchase as a “real top signing” after the Ghanaian’s match-winning effort at Elland Road.

There could be bold comparisons forming, too, between Kudus and one of Frank’s favourites at Brentford in Bryan Mbeumo.

Indeed, the Scandinavian boss has now potentially unearthed another blistering output machine he can rely on as his main marksman, with the 25-year-old also capable of playing all across the forward positions, like his Manchester United counterpart.

Yet, there is be a different member of Frank’s camp slipping under the radar as his next Mbeumo-style figure.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

An Mbeumo-like figure for Frank to rely on

Mbeumo and Frank would be seen as two key elements to Brentford’s unbelievable Premier League success story when the pair were still together at the GTech Community Stadium.

Staggeringly, 242 of Mbeumo’s 297 career appearances to date fell under the Dane’s long reign at the Bees, with 70 goals and 51 assists picked up along the way, winning him the label of being Frank’s “main man” as the now Spurs manager stated in April of this year.

While Kudus has gained a lot of plaudits at Spurs to date to now be seen as Frank’s main spark, there is another glue holding the North Londoners together that could be viewed as the 52-year-old’s most reliable asset: Joao Palhinha.

Kudus does offer up a similar exciting, hard-to-contain attacking presence as Mbeumo, but in Palhinha, Frank might well have uncovered another talent that allows his side to tick, with the loan-to-buy deal of £27m that’s on the table continuing to stand out as a masterstroke in this regard.

Football London’s Alasdair Gold has even hailed the deal to bring him in as “one of the bargains of the summer”, and it’s not the wildest shout when you assess the ex-Fulham man’s standout numbers to date back in the Premier League.

Away from hammering home two goals for his new employers already, Palhinha has also more than lived up to this previous billing as a “defensive monster” which was once handed to him by analyst Marcus Bring, winning a mighty 6.7 duels per game across his seven top-flight outings.

Already, it appears that Frank has stumbled across another vital commander he can rely on in a similar vein to Mbeumo, with Palhinha hopeful of many more happy seasons under his new boss, if his excellent start to life at Spurs is anything to go by.

After all, his former manager in Marco Silva, would go as far as to herald him as a “leader” at Craven Cottage and despite not donning the armband at Brentford under Frank, that’s exactly what Mbeumo was too.

Not every star man needs to bundle in the goals like the new Man Utd signing to make themselves a hero under Frank and Palhinha has certainly found that out already. Forget Kudus, the Portuguese has been their most important player to date this term.

Howe can make Woltemade even better by unleashing Newcastle's "unsung hero"

Newcastle United continue their Champions League campaign as Portuguese giants Benfica come to town.

Despite only picking up two victories in the Premier League all season so far, the Magpies did at least manage to entertain their die-hard fans last time out on Europe’s grandest stage.

Eddie Howe’s men went away to reigning Belgian Pro League champions Royale Union Saint-Gilloise and hammered the hosts 4-0.

They are winless on their own patch in the illustrious competition, however, as a Marcus Rashford-led effort ensured Barcelona travelled to Tyneside to collect a 2-1 win in mid-September.

Still, with Nick Woltemade finding the back of the net for fun at the moment, with the German actually in on the act in Belgium, too, it could be another game to remember for the 6-foot-6 menace against Benfica.

It’s safe to say memories of Alexander Isak are long gone now.

How Woltemade compares to Alexander Isak this season

Even while Newcastle haven’t been at their best so far this season, Woltemade has continually stood out as a thorn in the side for opposition defenders to thwart.

Indeed, the German attacker already has five goals next to his name for the Magpies from just eight appearances, with his strike last time in the Champions League for Howe’s men – which got the ball rolling against David Hubert’s side – coming about from just 42 touches of the ball.

He was instinctive once more for his new outfit against Brighton and Hove Albion, with a cleverly executed back-heel beating Bart Verbruggen in the Seagulls net, after the lethal number 27 had only amassed 31 touches across his 90 minute spell.

With a goalscoring frequency of every 99 minutes next to his name in the top-flight, it’s clear that Howe will be relying on Woltemade to unnerve Benfica under the St James’ Park floodlights later on, having already lived up to his tag of being an “absolutely ridiculous” finisher that he was previously handed to him by journalist Zach Lowy.

The towering centre forward is already emulating some of the greatest finishers the Toon have ever had and after fearing for their future without Isak in the summer, they now could care less that he was playing for Liverpool. After all, the German is streets ahead of Newcastle’s once much-loved striker.

Positive signs indeed, and to get more from his big summer arrival, Howe could be tempted to tinker with his wide options this week.

How Newcastle could make Woltemade even better

While Woltemade was a nuisance for the Seagulls to contain, the same can’t be said for his attacking teammate in Anthony Elanga.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

He remains without a goal or assist at Newcastle, since securing a £55m move to the club this summer from Nottingham Forest.

Howe was so disappointed by his forgettable showing on the South Coast that he was hauled off at the half-time interval, with the usually quick and hard-to-read winger failing to complete a single successful dribble from his minimal 20 touches of the ball.

In his place could come Jacob Murphy, who Woltemade would surely love lining up alongside if the experienced 30-year-old’s link-up play with ex-striker Isak is anything to read into.

Amazingly, 11 of Isak’s 62 strikes for the Toon came about from a Murphy assist, with journalist Lee Ryder just last season going out of his way to hail the number 23’s work alongside the Swede as “incredible”, when the pair combined for a goal against Ipswich Town.

To further back up the argument, Murphy also has an assist next to his name in the Champions League this season – which bumped his assist haul for the club in total to a sizeable 36 assists – with a late cameo against Barcelona seeing him combine with Anthony Gordon for a consolation effort.

He might not be as flashy or as direct as Elanga can be, but Howe and Co know where they stand with Murphy and what can he offer, having once been noted as being an “unsung hero” by journalist Scott Wilson for how he slips under the radar.

He will want to be front and centre of a confidence-boosting victory, however, if he is selected, with Woltemade also no doubt ready to lurk in the danger areas again to power home an effort put on a plate for him by his seasoned teammate.
