Tom Curran's comeback puts brothers back on course for all-format dominance

With Sam now a fixture in England’s Test set-up, the time is drawing nigh when both Currans take the field together

Andrew Fidel Fernando at Pallekele17-Oct-2018One brother pushing for regular selection in the ODI side, another making himself comfortable in the Test outfit – the Currans are realising boyhood dreams, but perhaps even they may not have imagined that they could both be in the same international squad together. The pair have not yet played a game together at the top level. Sam has not appeared in either of the Tests that Tom played, and Tom was injured for Sam’s first and so far only ODI, against Australia at Old Trafford in June. The day may soon come, however, where both will represent England at the same time. But neither would be satisfied with just the odd game or two together – they’ve set their sights on settling in for England for years to come.”The dream is to be playing all three formats together – we’ll be trying to get close to that,” Tom said, after taking 3 for 17 off his four overs in England’s victory in the rain-curtailed third ODI. “He had an amazing summer in the Tests and I’m super proud of him. I went away with the white-ball stuff and went to the IPL. I carried on playing white-ball cricket, while he’s playing red ball at the minute.”The incredibly stiff competition for England places, though, is stopping the Currans from turning out together in the ODIs at least. Tom might not have got a game on Wednesday had left-arm spinner Liam Dawson not had to leave the tour with a side strain. However, with England now 2-0 up in the series with two games to play, there may now be an opportunity for Sam to enter the XI in the coming week, so long as England wrap up the series on Saturday.”The strength in our squad is that there’s such a strong competition for places,” Tom said. “When you do get a go you might only get one or two games to impress. It’s a great place to be, with guys knocking on the door because the guys who are in the side will only be working hard to keep their place as well. I’m training hard and I’m looking to play well when I get the chance.”

'On form, we can match anyone' – Craig White praises Hampshire's fight

Kyle Abbott registered his best bowling figures of the season as Hampshire completed a 114-run victory over Worcestershire

ECB Reporters Network06-Sep-2018
ScorecardKyle Abbott registered his best bowling figures of the season as Hampshire completed a 114-run victory over Worcestershire in the Specsavers County Championship relegation battle at New Road.Abbott ended with 6 for 39 from 14 overs as Worcestershire, who resumed on 120 for 8, were dismissed for 133.Abbott claimed one of the two remaining wickets to fall as he followed up yesterday’s first hat-trick of his career to finish with eight wickets in the game.Hampshire’s third win of the season earned them 19 points and lifted them above Lancashire into fifth spot.It enabled them to complete a double over their opponents and was the perfect response after last week’s hammering by an innings and 52 runs against current champions Essex at Chelmsford.Their experienced international pace trio of Abbott, Dale Steyn and Fidel Edwards were a handful throughout for the home batsmen in seamer-friendly conditions. Ball dominated bat throughout with the only half-century of the game registered by Hampshire wicket-keeper Tom Alsop.”It was a great effort. The first morning, we knew it was going to be tough so to get 190 was a good effort and then to bowl them out and take a 70 run lead into our second innings was crucial,” Craig White, the Hampshire coach, said.”The partnership between Alsop and Dawson in our second innings was fantastic and then Abbott’s spell last night sort of cracked things open for us. There were a lot of key performances and it was generally a great team effort. Everyone chipped in.”You play a brilliant game like we did against Nottinghamshire, you perform like we did against Essex and then like we did today. It is so up and down. But when we are on form, we know we can match anyone.”Whilst Hampshire have significantly boosted their hopes of survival, Worcestershire are now facing an uphill task to avoid an instant return to Division Two after back to back defeats. They picked up only three bowling bonus points from this game and remain in bottom spot. The challenge to survive does not get any easier as champions elect Surrey head to New Road next week ahead of a visit to Essex and the final game of the campaign at home to Yorkshire.Worcestershire resumed on 120 for 8 with Ross Whiteley unbeaten on 37 and Wayne Parnell 17 not out. A cover drive for four by Parnell against Steyn brought up the half century stand. But Abbott’s first delivery of the day accounted for Whiteley who was beaten all ends up and bowled without addition to his overnight score.Parnell and last man Dillon Pennington hung around for nine overs. But it was Steyn who ended proceedings when Parnell on 26 nicked through to Jimmy Adams at second slip.

Gayle sizzles but St Kitts fizzle out

West Indies’ Under-19 heroes of 2016 – Hetmyer and Keemo Paul – combine to deliver Guyana victory under new captain Shoaib Malik

The Report by Peter Della Penna10-Aug-2018Shimron Hetmyer struck a match-winning half-century•Getty ImagesGuyana Amazon Warriors avenged a Lauderhill sweep at the hands of St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in 2017 courtesy an action-packed unbeaten half-century from local hero Shimron Hetmyer on Friday.Chris Gayle made 86 as well, after being sent in to bat, and it seemed a match-winning hand on a sticky Providence surface. After all, the next best score of the innings was a mere 15.St Kitts even had the hosts at 24 for 3 in a chase of 147, but the ploy to use Tom Cooper’s part-time offspin went awry as the first three balls of the fourth over were creamed for a four and two sixes by Hetmyer. This swung momentum in Guyana’s favour, and there was no looking back after that, with victory eventually achieved in 16.3 overs.Gayle’s stroke of luck
Each team’s leading scorer on the night profited heavily from major let-offs early in their innings. For St Kitts, the Universe Boss was stone dead on 5 after missing a sweep in the second over against Chris Green’s offspin. But umpire Nigel Duguid ignored the appeal and Gayle made the most of the reprieve. The St Kitts captain grafted his way through the first half of the innings, scoring at less than a run a ball, before spanking Green over long-on, twice, to end the 10th over.Gayle brought up a 41-ball half-century in the 13th and then accelerated sharply until he fell thanks to a sensational effort from Sherfane Rutherford. The 19-year old sprinted in from the cover boundary before diving forward to complete the catch and end Gayle’s stay 14 short of a century. It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s Sherfane!
Rutherford’s catch to dismiss Gayle made amends for shelling a skier from Cooper at the square leg boundary in the 11th over. And he continued the good work with another spectacular catch, running in from the boundary and leaping forwards at the ball, to dismiss Anton Devcich. Keemo Paul’s figures after claiming Devicich’s wicket were almost as brilliant as Rutherford’s pair of catches. The fast bowler finished with 2 for 16 in his four overs to keep St Kitts to 146 for 5.Sherfane Rutherford attempts a near impossible catch•Getty ImagesSheldon and Sandy show
Gayle tossed the new ball to fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell and Nepal legspinner Sandeep Lamichhane and the result was three wickets in three overs. Cottrell carried over his brilliant form from the Global T20 Canada, where he was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker for the champions Vancouver Knights, knocking out Luke Ronchi for a duck in the first over.Lamichhane’s first delivery in the CPL was far from the best ball he’s ever bowled, but Chadwick Walton drove the leg-stump half-volley straight to Ben Cutting at mid-on to make the leave 9 for 2. Shoaib Malik counterattacked with three boundaries off Cottrell before the left-arm pacer had reason to break out his salute celebration again as the Pakistan batsman was caught behind for 14. Guyana were 24 for 3 after three oversThomas lapse proves costly as Hetmyer blazes away
It could easily have been 24 for 4, considering Lamichanne’s first over had produced a second chance. Hetmyer, facing his first ball, was deceived by a googly and was stranded outside his crease but wicketkeeper Devon Thomas barely even laid a glove on the ball.Rather than stick with Lamichhane and continue attacking, Gayle tossed the ball to Cooper for the fourth over. Out came a half-tracker. Hetmyer swatted it for four. Then came two full tosses, which were clubbed for six. It was the start of a nine-ball sequence that shifted the momentum in favour of Guyana as they zoomed from 24 for 3 to 61 for 3.Alzarri Joseph began the fifth over with a no-ball, which Hetmyer clattered through point for four. The free hit was sent over midwicket for six. The next ball was a wayward bouncer and it was ruled as a wide, meaning Joseph had conceded 12 runs off only one legal delivery.Hetmyer scored 36 runs off the 10 balls that followed Thomas’ fluffed stumping, bringing the required run-rate under a-run-a-ball even as the Powerplay was in progress.Despite three more terrific overs from Lamichhane, who ended the day with figures of 2 for 12, Hetmyer faced little pressure. He coasted to his fifty off 29 balls before meting out punishment to Ben Cutting as well, striking the fast bowler for two fours and a six in the 16th over. Hetmyer then drove his 2016 Under-19 World Cup team-mate Joseph down the ground for his ninth boundary of the night to put the seal on an emphatic victory.

Sunderland: Mowbray’s "stunning" star could also leave alongside Clarke

Sunderland could be set to lose another one of their first-team stars alongside Jack Clarke in January, according to an update from a reliable journalist.

Which players left Sunderland in 2023?

At the Stadium of Light, Ross Stewart, Leon Dajaku, Bailey Wright, Carl Winchester, Lynden Gooch, Isaac Lihadji, Danny Batth, Elliot Embleton, Alex Bass and Joe Anderson all left the Championship club on either a temporary or permanent basis, and there could be another star heading for the exit door at the start of next year.

Premier League side Brentford are reportedly preparing a £15m offer for Jack Clarke to try and tempt Tony Mowbray’s team into sanctioning his sale, and on top of the forward being targeted, a second player is also on the radar of a different club in the top-flight.

Black Cats centre-back Daniel Ballard first joined Sunderland last summer from Arsenal and it's fair to say that he has majorly impressed during his 33 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Ballard profile), and his form saw him attracting interest over the summer, despite him not completing a departure before the deadline.

The Northern Ireland international was the subject of attention from West Ham United in June, and even though they decided against ramping up their pursuit, the 24-year-old is once again wanted, except this time, at Turf Moor.

Daniel Ballard transfer update…

According to The Sun's Alan Nixon, sharing a Daniel Ballard transfer update on his personal Patreon (via Football League World), Sunderland now face losing the defender as well as Clarke, with Premier League side Burnley having “watched” him in recent weeks.

The Clarets are seriously considering a swoop at the start of next year, but Vincent Kompany could find it difficult to prise his target away from the northeast outfit, who view their asset as an “integral” member of the squad when it comes to once again making a push for promotion.

Sunderland defender Daniel Ballard.

How much does Daniel Ballard earn at Sunderland?

At Sunderland, Ballard currently earns £15k-per-week which he deserves for his time at the club so far, and considering the physical presence he provides at the heart of the backline, Mowbray needs to do everything he can to keep hold of his prized asset.

The Stevenage-born talent is currently averaging 4.5 clearances and 2.5 aerial wins per game in the second tier, whilst recording a 90.3% pass success rate (WhoScored – Ballard statistics), displaying not only his ability to get stuck in, but also his calmness and composure on the ball.

He is additionally capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch having posted three final third involvements (two goals and one assist) since putting pen to paper, which makes him a wonderful option for the boss to have at his disposal.

Finally, Ballard, who has been labelled a “stunning” centre-back by journalist Josh Bunting, has the versatility to operate slightly higher up in defensive midfield alongside his usual role, with this attractive attribute being another reason as to why it would be a huge blow to lose him in January.

"Great" West Ham player could leave after refusing new contract

West Ham United have surprised plenty of neutrals this season, remaining unbeaten in the opening four Premier League games, with only Manchester City earning more points than David Moyes' side.

Those at the London Stadium will just be hoping that the international break didn't halt their momentum entirely, and they simply pick up where they left off, starting with a clash against the treble winners at the top of the league table.

It hasn't been an international break full of good news, either, with reports emerging that one key player is now refusing a contract extension, casting doubts over his West Ham future.

What's the latest West Ham United news?

Since losing Declan Rice to Arsenal for a reported £105m in the summer transfer window, West Ham have done well to pick themselves back up, both on and off the pitch.

Only time will tell, of course, whether their spending proves to be smart, but on paper the arrivals of the likes of Mohammed Kudus, James Ward-Prowse, and Edson Alvarez all coming through the door certainly looks like solid business.

The focus now may well be on keeping hold of the players, given that they've just bid farewell to Rice in the summer transfer window. Unfortunately for the Hammers, though, they could be set to suffer another blow.

According to Sean Whetstone, via West Ham Football, Pablo Fornals has decided not to extend his contract at the London Stadium. West Ham Football Tweeted: "Hammer Pablo Fornals has decided NOT to take up an unilateral option to extend his contract at West Ham, nor has he agreed to sign a new contract meaning he will be free to leave next summer.

"Fornals signed a five-year contract in 2019 which will expire next June. He cost the Hammers £24m with up to £6m add-ons. Fornals has made 184 appearances for the Hammers in all competitions."

How has Pablo Fornals performed this season?

West Ham midfielder Pablo Fornals.

It would be some blow for West Ham if Fornals not only left, but left as a free agent next summer. The midfielder is still an important part of Moyes' side, having featured in all four Premier League games so far this season, with the London club leaving many impressed in the last month or so.

When on form, the Spaniard has deservedly received plenty of praise, including from Moyes, who said, via the official West Ham website: "Pablo is a player that we really like. He is a great energetic player who does great work for the team, and he also has a knack for coming up with goals. There was the one at Bournemouth and in the semi-final. He has been a great team player over the last two years, and I have really enjoyed working with him. He is a great boy.”

With that said, it will certainly be interesting to see how the Hammers act when the January transfer window comes around. With Fornals on course to leave for free next summer, they may yet decide to cash in on the midfielder, who has been at the club for four years now.

Man United Boss Ten Hag Now Expected To Sign "Underrated" Defender

Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is moving closer to being able to add another defender to the ranks this summer before the transfer window closes, according to reports.

Who could Manchester United sign or sell before the window closes?

This window, Manchester United have managed to secure the additions of Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund at Old Trafford and there could be more arrivals to come in the next week or so.

Despite this, the Red Devils have produced two sub-par displays in their opening Premier League fixtures, recording a fortuitous 1-0 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening day of the campaign at home followed by a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in north London, as per Sky Sports.

Next up for Manchester United is a home tie against Nottingham Forest this weekend and they will have to do without £60 million signing Mount, who has suffered a knock and will be out until after the international break, according to The Daily Mail.

In terms of recruitment, Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been mentioned in connection with a surprise move to Old Trafford; however, it is more likely that Manchester United will wait until January to advance for the England international due to his ban from football activity for breaching the FA's betting rules, according to FootballTransfers.

ESPN understand that Ten Hag is looking to add a midfielder and a goalkeeper before the close of play, though player sales will be needed to spark any potential incomings.

Donny van de Beek, Eric Bailly, Brandon Williams and Dean Henderson may all leave the Premier League giants this summer and any funds secured for their services are likely to go towards reinforcements, while shifting Harry Maguire off the books is also a priority.

Manchester United winger Facundo Pellestri is in talks over a loan move to Sheffield United and despite being pleased by his progress, they see a move to Bramall Lane as an opportunity for the youngster to gain regular first-team experience, according to The Manchester Evening News.

Is Jean-Clair Todibo joining Manchester United?

According to L'Equipe cited via Sport Witness, Manchester United are keen on a younger Maguire replacement in the shape of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo – and his exit from the Ligue 1 outfit is said to be 'looming'.

Nice actually now expect their star man will leave and are already looking at replacements – they have identified Rennes star Christopher Wooh as an alternative that can strengthen their backline as they prepare for Todibo to head to Manchester United, as per the report.

Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.

Labelled as "underrated" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig earlier this year, Todibo has gone on to make 104 appearances across all competitions in his time at Nice, registering two goals in total, as per Transfermarkt.

For a defender, Todibo has excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of successful take-ons, averaging 0.63 per 90 minutes across the last 365 days, putting him in the 96th percentile for this metric, according to FBRef.

It remains to be seen whether Todibo's prospective arrival would further unsettle Maguire and impact his future at Old Trafford; nevertheless, there is no doubt that the former Barcelona man would be an upgrade and hopefully replace the England international.

Philander ruled out of Bangladesh Tests

Vernon Philander has been ruled out of the Bangladesh Test series, as he continues to recover from a lower-back problem with the aim of being fully fit by mid-October. Philander is scheduled to play the fourth and fifth round of first-class matches for his franchise, the Cobras, and will likely play for South Africa in the four-day day-night match against Zimbabwe on Boxing Day.Philander has mostly recovered from the back niggle he picked up in England, which kept him out of the fourth Test at Old Trafford and has seen him sidelined since. Philander was part of the Cobras pre-season training but has not played any cricket since the England tour.At an event earlier this week, Philander, who drew criticism recently from former captain Graeme Smith, said he has spoken to captain Faf du Plessis about his fitness. Du Plessis has weighed in on the situation during the England tour, urging the bowler to focus on his fitness.”It’s international sport, you’ll always find criticism. As long as it’s constructive, then I’m all for it. You’ve got to take it on the chin,” Philander told . “Myself and Faf had a good chat afterwards, the way the two of us nailed down things was quite constructive at the end of the day. As long as you’re open and honest with each other, that’s the key thing. He made his view clear and obviously I made mine clear to him. As long as we understand each other, we’ve got a road to walk together.”Without Philander, South Africa will rely on Morne Morkel, Kagiso Rabada, Duanne Olivier and Andile Phehlukwayo for the Bangladesh series, with Chris Morris also out injured until mid-October. Morris is expected to return for the T20s against Bangladesh.Dale Steyn is set for a comeback at the Global T20 in November and joined the South African squad for two days in Potchefstroom, where he worked with team physiotherapist Brandon Jackson and the bowlers in the group.”Dale has been away from the squad for a while. He still got a few boxes to tick. We wanted him to be around the group again,” du Plessis said. “We want to make sure he still feels important because he is a very crucial part of our team and we also wanted him to help out with the younger bowlers.”
