Arsenal now make £45m+ transfer bid to sign "intelligent" star for Arteta

Arsenal have launched a £45m+ bid to sign a transfer target for Mikel Arteta, however, it may not be enough to land the player in question.

Arsenal transfer rumours

It was another campaign of mixed emotions for Arsenal last time out, who took the Premier League title race down to the final day – an improvement on last year – before losing out to Manchester City after the Sky Blues beat West Ham to lift a fourth league title in a row.

Arsenal keen on "phenomenal" £250k-p/w star as Chelsea interest collapses

The Gunners could be set to make a statement signing this summer.

ByBen Browning Jun 1, 2024

In their quest to finally chase down the Manchester outfit, the Gunners are seemingly looking to be quite active on the transfer front this summer, with a number of names already tipped to make a move to the Emirates.

It has been claimed that Arsenal are in pole position to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer. The Gunners are said to be among the clubs who have held a long-term interest in the Nigerian, who has a £112m release. Arsenal are also reportedly preparing an official bid for Bologna star Joshua Zirkzee, but Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have the striker on their list of potential targets and are "involved" in the race.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are believed to have held talks with AS Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana via his representatives, but they face competition from Paris-Saint Germain and Atletico Madrid – who have done the same.

However, there is another big name from Europe being linked with the north Londoners as well. The player in question is RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko. Edu Gaspar and Arteta are thought to be prioritising the addition of a new striker this summer and Sesko has been regularly mentioned by sections of the press as a player who is wanted at Arsenal.

Meanwhile, last month, journalist Christian Falk provided an insight into Arsenal and Manchester United's interest in the hitman.

"Benjamin Sesko is the hottest Bundesliga stock in England at the moment," Falk said. "Arsenal FC and Manchester United are particularly interested in the striker. In Leipzig they say: Sesko is physically even stronger than Erling Haaland (Manchester City). Both strikers were trained at Red Bull Salzburg. Like Haaland, Sesko also demanded an exit clause for a move to the Bundesliga."

Arsenal make £45m+ transfer offer to sign "intelligent" star

Now, a fresh update on Arsenal's interest in Sesko, who scored 14 in 31 Bundesliga outings this past season, has been provided.

Football Transfers report that the Gunners have made a concrete step towards signing the 21-year-old this summer, with the club launching a bid of €55m (just over £45m) for Sesko. The striker's current release clause is €65m but Arsenal are hopeful their offer will still be accepted.

Should Arsenal complete a move for Sesko, Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic has provided an insight into what he could bring to the club. When asked about Sesko, who he may face off against in the Euro 2024 group stages, Petrovic was full of praise for the forward.

"He’s having a good half-season, he’s in great scoring form. I read that he’s scored in his last seven matches in a row. He seems to have gained strong momentum for the Euros. He’s a forward who has everything a modern player needs. He’s tall, strong, fast and intelligent. I’ve watched some of his matches. Of course he can play in the Premier League. Absolutely! He has great potential and he’s been successfully proving it in recent months."

£25,000-a-week Leeds man confirms he’s played his last game under Farke

Leeds United could be set to lose one of their long term servants after he revealed that he has probably played his last game under Daniel Farke.

Leeds forced to settle for playoffs

Overwhelming favourites to be promoted automatically from the Championship just six weeks ago, Leeds will have to settle for the play-offs as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. The Yorkshire outfit were beaten on the final day of the season by fellow play-off side Southampton, but Ipswich beating Huddersfield Town made the score irrelevant, as the Tractor Boys were promoted at Leeds' expense.

It capped a horror few weeks for Leeds, who won just twice in April (against Hull City and Middlesbrough) and lost four of their final seven games to see them drop out of the top two.

Leeds eyeing move for ex-PL ace with “genuine quality” this summer

Leeds could sign a proven Premier League talent this summer.

ByJosh Barker May 5, 2024

They do match Sunderland's record of most points without securing automatic promotion (90), but given at one point it seemed certain a side would break that with games left to play, it was an underwhelming end to the campaign. Now, they face Norwich City in the semi-finals before a date with either Southampton or West Brom in the final at Wembley should they make it past the Canaries.

It's a big if too; Leeds have never won promotion from the play-offs in five attempts, most recently falling to Derby County in 2019, who themselves went on to lose to Aston Villa in the final.

Now, one player is already on the verge of leaving, it has emerged, to compound a wretched few weeks.

Defender confirms he's "close" to exit

That comes via fan favourite Luke Ayling, who has confirmed that he is "close" to making his loan move to Middlesbrough permanent this summer. The defender joined the Riverside outfit on loan in January in search of regular first team football, but his £25,000 per week deal at Elland Road will be up this summer, leaving him free to make the next move as he sees fit.

Luke Ayling for Leeds United.

And such has been his impact in the northeast that it seems he is set to remain a Boro player beyond this summer. Quizzed on his future, he admitted it was unlikely that he returns to Leeds.

“I think things are close and I’m excited for what the future holds", he explained. "I can’t say it’s done yet so [I] can’t say too much, but the last four months I’ve loved being part of it. I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Ayling appeared over 250 times for Leeds, scoring 11 goals and grabbing 21 assists during his stint at Elland Road. He was a mainstay both in the Championship and the Premier League, but has been overlooked by Farke in favour of Archie Gray and Connor Roberts.

As a result, he seems set to leave the club, but will be fondly remembered by the Leeds faithful.

Celtic could find their next O’Riley in swoop for star likened to de Bruyne

Celtic still have plenty to play for between now and the end of the 2023/24 campaign as Brendan Rodgers bids to avoid a trophyless return to Parkhead.

The Hoops are one point ahead of their closest rivals in the Scottish Premiership, having played a game more than them, and are still in the SFA Cup, having been knocked out of the League Cup and European competitions during the first half of the season.

This means that they could still lift two pieces of silverware before the end of the term but they will need to fight hard to ensure that they do not end up empty-handed.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

Attention, irrespective of how this season goes, will then turn to how the Scottish giants can improve their playing squad during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Rodgers reportedly already has his eye on possible targets to bolster his side ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, and there is one target who could be seen as the next Matt O'Riley at Parkhead.

Celtic's interest in exciting playmaker

The Daily Record recently relayed claims from Russia that Celtic are keeping tabs on exciting Krasnodar attacking midfielder Eduard Spertsyan ahead of the summer.

It was claimed that the Hoops are monitoring his situation but there is no mention of any current interest from other clubs in Europe at this time.

The Armenia international was quoted as saying that a move to Europe is something he would like to do, and recognised that it would take hard work and "fight" in order to achieve that goal.

Football Scotland reporter Mark Hendry has reported that Krasnodar have not had any contact with the Scottish champions as it stands, but have spoken with an unnamed Belgian side.

Eduard Spertsyan

This suggests that there will be competition from other clubs to secure his signature in the summer, should the Hoops decide to act upon their interest in him.

Last summer, it was reported that Manchester City and Newcastle were among the teams looking at the talented midfielder, who was valued at €13m (£11m) at the time.

Almost one year later and it now remains to be seen how much Krasnodar would want for the 23-year-old wizard, who has just over two years left to run on his contract.

Celtic could land their next version of current star O'Riley by swooping to sign Spertsyan from the Russian outfit at the end of the season, due to his quality in the final third.

Matt O'Riley's Celtic season in numbers

The Denmark international has been in terrific form for the Hoops as an attack-minded midfielder as part of Rodgers' three-man midfield, typically alongside Callum McGregor and Tomoki Iwata of late.

Signed from MK Dons in January 2022, the left-footed wizard has the quality to both score and create goals at an impressive rate in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table, the 23-year-old magician has been one of the team's outstanding performers at the top end of the pitch with his devastating ability in front of goal.

Only Luis Palma (2.7) has made more key passes per game than O'Riley, and no other Celtic player has scored more goals, taken more shots, or registered more assists than the Danish dynamo.

With his phenomenal form for the club, however, comes interest from elsewhere. Leeds are reportedly considering a bid for the midfield whiz, should they win promotion from the Championship, whilst Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion are also eyeing up the Hoops superstar.

This means that Celtic could end up losing the former Fulham prospect in the upcoming summer transfer window, if one of those aforementioned clubs come in with an acceptable offer for his services, which would leave a huge void in the middle of the park for Rodgers.

The Bhoys could, though, land their next version of O'Riley by swooping in to sign Spertsyan, who was supposedly of interest to Newcastle and Manchester City last year, as a possible replacement for the Leeds target.

Why Eduard Spertsyan could be the next Matt O'Riley

Firstly, Ajax director Sven Mislintat hailed the Armenian ace as "special" last year and claimed that he could have been similar to Kevin de Bruyne with the Dutch club.

The Ajax chief claimed that Spertsyan playing in Russia at the time prevented the move from happening, but that he could have been De Bruyne-esque for the Eredivisie side. Celtic's current interest in his services suggests that the same issue will not be a problem this summer.

Kevin De Bruyne for Manchester City.

You can understand why he was likened to the Belgian superstar when you factor in his fantastic statistics from a central midfield position for Krasnodar.

The 23-year-old playmaker has racked up an eye-catching 18 goals and 13 assists in 48 appearances in the Premier Liga for his club since the start of last season.

As you can see in the table above, Spertsyan is a central midfielder who can score and create goals at an exceptional rate, just like O'Riley and De Bruyne – who produced seven goals and 16 assists in the Premier League last term – do in their respective divisions.

The Armenia international chipped in with 21 direct goal contributions, and 2.2 key passes per game, last term, in comparison to O'Riley's aforementioned 23 direct goal contributions, and 2.2 key passes per outing, in 30 league matches this season.

This shows that the 5 foot 10 star, who has 30 goals and 23 assists in 99 games for Krasnodar, has the potential to make a similar impact in the final third from a midfield position.

They are both exciting attack-minded midfielders who want to break forward to join in with the attack, and have the composure and quality to decide games with goals and assists on a regular basis.

Therefore, Rodgers could land his next version of O'Riley by securing a deal for the Armenian magician, who has been likened to De Bruyne.

Why it’s time for Newcastle to bench their £60k-p/w star

Newcastle United have had quite a turbulent campaign so far. In their most recent outing against Arsenal, the Magpies managed to concede four goals during what was one of their worst losses of the season.

Eddie Howe's men have managed to go from qualifying for the Champions League to a mid-table Premier League side in a matter of months, and it feels as if the squad of 2022/23 are no longer there.

Indeed, Newcastle have gone through something of an injury crisis this term with multiple first-team players being sidelined together on more than one occasion.

However, with the players who were fit, they should've had more than enough quality to still perform competitively in England's top flight.

But, this hasn't been the case for the Magpies with many of their reliable players from last season not performing up to the standards expected.

One of those in particular is that of Miguel Almiron. 2022/23 was by far and away the most prolific of the Paraguay international's Newcastle career after he was involved in a total of 25 goals across all competitions in just 41 games.

Miguel Almiron's season in numbers so far

Despite only being sidelined for a total of two games this term, the 30-year-old has only managed to contribute to seven goals.

Although this is half of what he managed last season, he has played way more than half of the games he played throughout 2023/24.

dan-burn-miguel-almiron-newcastle-opinion

At the time of writing, Almiron has played 36 matches in total and is yet to hit a combined total of five goals or assists in any individual competition.

Additionally, in Newcastle's most recent game against Arsenal, the winger somehow managed to have fewer touches on the ball than goalkeeper Loris Karius during what was a poor performance.

As per Sofascore, Karius amassed a total of 43 touches, whereas, Almiron managed less than half of that and ended up with 21 until he was taken off in the 64th minute.

Not only this, but, during the entirety of the time the £60k-per-week winger was on the pitch, he failed to register a shot or key pass.

These are not the things you want to see from one of your star starting players, especially after having his best campaign last time out. As a result, dropping him to the bench for tonight's FA Cup tie with Blackburn Rovers could be for the best.

Newcastle's Miguel Almiron replacement

Although Newcastle's injuries hinder their attacking options somewhat, there are a plethora of options for Howe to look into when replacing Almiron.

The most obvious choice would be that of Harvey Barnes. Signed in the summer for a fee worth £38m, the former Leicester man has been sidelined for some time due to injury but has since returned and appeared on the bench.

When fit, the winger has played 11 times and has managed to contribute to two goals so far. Although these statistics don't scream 'upgrade', the injuries the England international has suffered need to be taken into account.

His appearances have been scattered with Barnes missing a total of 27 fixtures through injury this season. So, his form can't really be a fair judgment of his footballing prowess.

If injuries allow it, having an extended run in the team could be highly beneficial for Barnes and could potentially reinvigorate the Magpies' squad. That may well start with Blackburn on Tuesday evening.

Newcastle star Isak sidelined longer than planned after new injury update

With just one win from their last six league games, Newcastle United's list of woes seem to never end with a star player now set for a spell on the sidelines after their injury proved more sinister than initially predicted.

Newcastle United injury updates

After achieving European football for the first time in twenty years last season, Newcastle appear to have been brought back down to earth, sitting ninth in the Premier League and facing a growing list of injuries to first team players.

Whilst Saturday's thrilling 4-4 draw at home to Luton Town saw both Harvey Barnes and Callum Wilson return to the field, the loss of Anthony Gordon halfway through the game did little to chip away at the injury list at St James' Park. A twisted ankle for Gordon saw him join a number of key players now missing for The Magpies.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

Sandro Tonali will remain suspended until August after being charged with gambling offences, whilst his midfield partner, Joelinton, underwent surgery on his thigh last month and won't return until May at the earliest. First choice goalkeeper, Nick Pope, will not be back between the sticks until April with Martin Dúbravka taking up duties in his absence.

Despite the long list of significant injuries at Newcastle, it is developments surrounding a star player's short-term issue that will be of the greatest concern to fans.

Isak injury latest brings more bad news

After assistant coach, Jason Tindall, proclaimed that Alexander Isak was "close" to a return against Luton, it left many fans confused as to why their side's top scorer had not featured in the game. Post-match, it was the job of Toon boss, Eddie Howe, to be the bearer of bad news and concede that "He wasn't close. We don't think he's got a serious injury but it might keep him out for a couple of games but hopefully we can get him back pretty quickly."

The 24-year-old, who had to be withdrawn halfway through last month's victory over Aston Villa, is now set to be sidelined for the next few games with a groin injury, missing key clashes with Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and potentially Arsenal towards the end of the month. Isak has delivered 24 goals in 52 appearances since his £63 million move from Real Sociedad in August 2022, making himself a fan favourite in the north-east.

armando-broja-alexander-isak-west-ham

Whilst Isak will be sorely missed on Tyneside, Eddie Howe does have a capable replacement at his disposal in the form of Callum Wilson. After managing to keep hold of the Englishman during the January transfer window, the question will now be whether Wilson can replicate the output of his teammate.

There is no doubt that Callum Wilson will be able to replace Isak in regard to pure attacking output however, the Swede's presence will definitely be missed in the progressive side of the game. Significantly outranking his teammate in progressive carries and take-ons, Isak's versatility and proficiency with the ball at his feet is something that will be difficult to replicate as he spends the next few weeks watching from the sidelines.

Exclusive: Langeveldt focused on improving Bangladesh's consistency

The new bowling coach knows there is only one way to be a side that does well abroad and that is to have seamers who know how to hit a line and length

Mohammad Isam29-Jul-2019Since 2015, a major part of Bangladesh’s success in ODI cricket was because of their ability to take wickets with the new ball. However, since the start of 2019, their main quicks have managed only seven wickets in the first Powerplay, at a strike-rate of 113.14 and a bowling average of 103. This is the first problem their new bowling coach Charl Langeveldt will have to try to fix.As a function of playing at home a lot, most of the Bangladesh fast bowlers know how to exploit pitches that are slow and partial to spin. The cutter, for example, is Mustafizur Rahman’s go-to delivery, and he was able to put it to good use even in England where all 20 of his wickets in the World Cup came after the 30th over. However, for Bangladesh to be a successful bowling unit in all conditions, Langeveldt, who has previously been part of the support staff at South Africa and Afghanistan, said they had to work on their consistency and fitness.”In all formats you need to be consistent with the new ball,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “You need to be able to hit your length consistently, and bowl at least four or five balls in the right area from where you will be able to ask questions. Most of the time at home they will play one or two seamers but when you go to South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, you might have to go with three seamers. I have to identify three fit guys who will bowl consistently in good areas and be aggressive in that length.”If you want to be the best, you need to be able to be consistent with the new ball. You have to be consistent with the length. [Mustafizur Rahman] is good with change of pace but it is hard with the new ball. The wicket is not gripping at times. For me it is to get the seam position nice and straight. He uses a lot of offcutters into the wicket but for me the key would be able to swing the ball back in to the right-handers, and take it away from the left-handers.”Langeveldt was the South Africa bowling coach in 2017 when they beat Bangladesh 2-0 with the visiting pacers picking up just nine wickets in the entire Test series.”This is a good challenge for me,” he said. “I was coaching the South Africa bowlers couple of years ago when we played against them, and we saw them struggle in foreign conditions. They were struggling with consistency in line and length. It is a thing that can be fixed, and I have to see if it is a technical problem. It will be my challenge.”Langeveldt pointed to the fast bowling revolution taking place in India as proof that teams from the subcontinent can do well abroad. “When you want to play well away from home, you need to have good seamers. India have improved because they play well all over the world. They have good spinners but they also have great seamers. I would like to ensure a few [Bangladesh] seamers come through the system and be able to compete in international cricket.”Langeveldt said that he is the type of bowling coach who likes to be up front with the players, so that he can quickly identify their strengths and weaknesses. “I will go to the bowler first, discuss things with him. What does he think? Then I would try to implement my coaching philosophy on him, and tell him if you want to be the No 1 bowler in the world, this is what you need to do.”How can I help you? If this is a technical thing, I will definitely help him. But first it is a discussion between me and player, what his shortcomings are, and then we will take it forward from then.”
