People who saw him bat raised questions about his technique, especially his static footwork, but few can argue with the numbers that Marcus Trescothick put up in international cricket, both in Tests and ODIs. A 79 in his first ODI innings, and 66 on Test debut, announced him as a player of immense talent, and over a six-year career, Trescothick did justice to his potential, though he would have scored many more international runs had he not succumbed to a stress-related illness which eventually forced his retirement. As a Test batsman, Trescothick finished with impressive stats – an average of 43.79, with 14 centuries in 76 Tests – but arguably he was even more successful in ODIs, aggregating 4335 runs, which is second in the all-time list for England, next only to Alec Stewart’s 4677. His 12 hundreds, and 33 fifty-plus scores, are both ODI records for England.

Tests 76 5825 43.79 14/ 29 54.51
ODIs 123 4335 37.37 12/ 21 85.21

As a Test opener, he ranks among England’s best. Only four – Geoff Boycott, Graham Gooch, Michael Atherton and Len Hutton – scored more runs, while in terms of averages, Trescothick again ranks fifth.

Most prolific Test openers for England (at least 5000 runs)
Batsman Tests Runs Average 100s/ 50s
Len Hutton 76 6721 56.47 19/ 31
Jack Hobbs 58 5130 56.37 14/ 27
Geoff Boycott 107 8091 48.16 22/ 42

Marcus Trescothick 76 5824 43.78 14/ 29
Michael Atherton 108 7476 39.14 16/ 45

With Andrew Strauss and Michael Vaughan, Trescothick forged excellent partnerships at the top of the order. They are among only six England opening pairs to put together more than 2000 partnership runs. He averaged more than 50 per partnership with Strauss, while with Vaughan the average stand was only marginally below that mark.Trescothick finished with reasonable stats overseas as well, but he was far more prolific at home, averaging 51.05, almost 15 more than his overseas average. During the six years he played, he was England’s best batsman at home, with nine hundreds in 42 Tests. He also scored more than 1000 Test runs in three successive years, 2003 to 2005, and averaged more than 40 for five years in a row – stats that point to his amazing consistency. (Click here for his career summary in Tests.)

Andrew Strauss 21 1660 44.86 6/ 6
Andrew Flintoff 28 1616 41.43 3/ 13

Trescothick was at his best during the first innings of Tests: an average of 50.14 in first innings dropped to 35.33 in the second. In 76 first innings, he topped fifty 30 times, which is an excellent conversion rate of nearly 40%.

Michael Vaughan 59 2648 45.65 8/ 11
Mark Butcher 44 1703 38.70 4/ 11

Being an opener, he inevitably fell early in his innings quite often – 56 times out of 143 innings – but he also cashed in when he settled in: six of his 14 centuries were150-plus knocks.

As an ODI batsman, Trescothick was arguably even more immense. No opener scored as many runs as he did, while the 1725 runs he added with Nick Knight is the highest by any England pair in ODIs.Like in Tests, Trescothick preferred playing at home in ODIs as well, averaging nearly 45 at home, and only 30.84 outside. During the six years he played, he was easily England’s best batsman at home. (Click here for Trescothick’s ODI career summary.)

Andrew Flintoff 42 1253 41.76 3/ 6
Andrew Strauss 30 1054 40.53 2/ 5

Of the 12 hundreds he scored in ODIs, six were in losing causes, but Trescothick still figures among England’s biggest match-winners: in wins he averaged almost 46, a number bettered only by four England batsmen.

Marcus Trescothick 52 2153 45.80 92.44

He also relished the challenge of chasing down a target in ODIs, averaging 41.08 when batting second, which is higher than what any other England batsman managed (among those who scored at least 1500 runs in run-chases). In victorious run-chases, the average was even higher – 51.68.

Fraser-McGurk called into Australia's T20I squad for Perth match

Wes Agar has also been added as pace-bowling cover with Josh Hazlewood returning home ahead of the New Zealand tour

Andrew McGlashan12-Feb-2024Jake Fraser-McGurk could make his T20I debut on Tuesday having been drafted into Australia’s squad for the final match against West Indies in Perth.Fraser-McGurk and South Australia quick Wes Agar will bolster the group with Josh Hazlewood having returned home following the second game in Adelaide to prepare for the New Zealand tour.Xavier Bartlett had already been added to the squad for Perth, so would appear a good chance to make his T20I debut in place of Hazlewood after a terrific start to his ODI career where he claimed consecutive four-wicket hauls against West Indies.Related

  • Maxwell thankful for support after 'less than ideal' Adelaide incident

Fraser-McGurk also made his ODI debut in that series and caught the eye with his aggressive approach, especially in Canberra where he smashed 41 off 18 balls.Australia’s selectors may look to rest other players in Perth which could open the door for Fraser-McGurk. There is the enticing prospect of him and Glenn Maxwell being in the same XI although Maxwell could be in line to sit out having revealed the initial plan was for him to rest him in Adelaide before he talked the selectors around and proceeded to pile up a 50-ball hundred in front of his parents.”Originally I was supposed to not be playing, I was going to be rested,” Maxwell said. “I sort of talked them into [it by going,] ‘Yeah, I wouldn’t mind playing this one, my family’s going to be here’, so they changed their mind, which was nice. I just thought, ‘Imagine if I was rested for this game, they made the effort to come over here’, but they had a Barossa tour yesterday so they were pretty happy.”Aaron Hardie, who plays for Western Australia, is also part of the squad but has not yet played in the series and would be a popular inclusion for the home crowd.Australia have no shortage of top-order batting options in white-ball cricket so Fraser-McGurk, who hit a world-record 29-ball one-day hundred earlier this season, is not in the frame for this year’s T20 World Cup but his progress is being closely monitored.”We feel like we’ve got some pretty good options at the top of the order in that T20 side,” national selector George Bailey said last week. “Even then there’s a couple of other guys who have batted in the middle or have batted at the top in T20 cricket who can cover as well. The talent’s there [with Fraser-McGurk], he’s one we’re certainly keeping a close eye on.”Travis Head and Steven Smith will return to the T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, while Matt Short is also due to be part of that trip having missed the West Indies matches due to injury, with Head currently favoured to partner David Warner at the top for the World Cup.Meanwhile, Agar previously played two ODIs against West Indies in 2021. He took two wickets in four matches for Adelaide Strikers in the BBL before losing his place in the side. His state, South Australia, which Fraser-McGurk also plays for, are not in contention for the Marsh Cup final with the last round of games taking place the day after the Perth T20I.There are currently a number of quicks nursing injuries with Lance Morris (side), Nathan Ellis (rib) and Sean Abbott (shoulder) sidelined although Ellis is due to return for the New Zealand series. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc have been rested for this series.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

AC Milan manager Sergio Conceição praised Santiago Giménez’s impact off the bench after the Mexican striker helped spark Milan’s 2-1 comeback win over Genoa at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium on Monday.

"Even in the most difficult moments, he's one of the first to arrive at Milanello. He has the quality. It's just a matter of time. Adapting to Italy is not easy for anyone," said Conceição.

Giménez came on in the second half and provided an assist just six minutes later, setting up Rafael Leão’s equalizer. The Portuguese striker completed the turnaround, keeping the Rossoneri in ninth place with 57 points—six behind the European qualification spots—with 35 Serie A matchdays played.

In a clash featuring two Mexican players, Johan Vásquez started for Genoa and played the full 90 minutes, while Giménez changed the course of the match with his key contribution.

After another game coming off the bench, the former Cruz Azul player spoke about his performance against Genoa, where his assist to Leão brought Milan level at 1-1:

"I feel really good physically", Giménez said to DAZN. "I train at my best to then show it on the pitch. I truly believe that how you train is how you perform in the game. I'm feeling really good. I know my strengths and always try to make them available to the team. I feel comfortable when I have to attack the space in depth."

Regarding facing fellow countryman Johan Vásquez, Santiago added:

"He’s a great friend, and I’m very happy with the great work he’s done in Serie A. He’s an important reference for Genoa, and we couldn’t wait to play against him today."

    WHAT SANTIAGO GIMÉNEZ SAID

A few days ago, Giménez spoke about the “Breakfast Club,” a training routine he started during his time at Feyenoord, which involves arriving at the club hours before breakfast to do extra workouts.

“At first, when we created this Breakfast Club, there were only two or three of us. By the time I left, it was almost the whole team coming in early to train before breakfast,” the striker explained.

Currently, he admits he’s “alone” at Milan in following this early routine, but he hopes others will join over time:

“For now, I’m alone at Milan, but little by little I’ll attract someone else,” he told .

Melbourne Stars wicketkeeper Sam Harper hospitalised after blow to the head

He suffered a laceration to his chin and neck but scans cleared him of a fracture

Melbourne Stars wicketkeeper Sam Harper was taken to hospital via ambulance after a nasty blow to the head at training but scans have cleared him of a fracture despite suffering a laceration to his chin and neck.Harper was training with the Stars squad at the MCG on Friday ahead of Saturday’s clash against Sydney Sixers when he was struck in the head while batting in the nets. While attempting to play a ramp shot he was hit on the chin with the ball lodging under the grill of his helmet, causing a severe laceration near his throat. Harper was immediately attended to by the Stars medical team to control the bleeding. An ambulance was called but he was conscious, breathing and stable when he was taken to hospital for further treatment. He remained there overnight and will be monitored in the coming days despite scans clearing him of any fracture or soft tissue damage to his jaw or neck. The training session was immediately called off. Harper’s situation will be treated with caution given his history of concussions. He suffered a heavy concussion in the BBL in January 2020 when he collided with Hobart Hurricanes bowler Nathan Ellis and had to be taken to hospital. He was also hospitalised with concussion in 2017 when he was hit by a bat while keeping during a Sheffield Shield game.Harper will be unable to play tomorrow night and Stars do not have a back-up wicketkeeper on their list. Former Stars player and Victoria limited-overs captain Peter Handscomb has been called in at short notice as he does not have a BBL contract and was set to play grade cricket in Melbourne tomorrow for his club side St Kilda. He had been named captain of the Cricket Australia XI that is set to play a three-day game against West Indies in Adelaide starting on Tuesday but may need to be replaced for that game as Stars made him for all of the remaining three games of the home and away season and possibly finals, depending on Harper’s recovery.Handscomb has kept for Australia in T20Is and he played 51 BBL matches for Stars between 2012 and 2020 before playing two seasons at Hobart Hurricanes. He played three games for Melbourne Renegades last season as a replacement player, having not been contracted.

Matt Henry joins New Zealand's mounting injury list; Jamieson called in as cover

Lockie Ferguson, who hurt his achilles against Australia, is likely to be fit for the Pakistan game

Firdose Moonda01-Nov-2023Fast bowler Matt Henry hurt his right hamstring during the World Cup match between South Africa and New Zealand in Pune and left the field midway through his sixth over. James Neesham completed the over, the 27th of South Africa’s innings, and went on to finish with 1 for 69 in 5.3 overs.Henry received treatment with the team management hopeful they could strap him up and have him back on the field but later confirmed he would not return to bowl. New Zealand Cricket said he will be sent for a scan on Thursday. Henry did come to bat at No. 11, with New Zealand 133 for 9 chasing 358 and desperate to reduce the margin of defeat. He faced nine deliveries but could not run, as Glenn Phillips took the score to 167 before he was the last man to fall in the 36th over.New Zealand have subsequently brought in Kyle Jamieson as cover into the squad. Jamieson will arrive in Bengaluru on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s game against Pakistan.”The severity of Matt’s injury, combined with a short turnaround to Pakistan, meant we couldn’t risk being a bowler down for Saturday,” head coach Gary Stead said.”Matt’s been a world class performer for us in ODI cricket for the past two World Cup cycles so we’ve got our fingers crossed for the scan results later today.”Stead said Jamieson was well prepared to return to India.”Kyle’s on his way over as we speak and we look forward to welcoming him back into the group. He’ll likely train with us on Friday with a mind to being available for Saturday’s game.”Kyle was able to train for two full weeks with us earlier in the tournament and has since played a Plunket Shield match – so we’re confident he’ll be able to hit the ground running.”There was another injury issue for New Zealand as well, with Neesham suffering a blow on the wrist of his right hand during his follow-through. He came out to bat at No. 9, below Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee, with New Zealand 109 for 7 in their chase of 357. NZC said an X-ray had “cleared him of any broken bones”.Meanwhile, Lockie Ferguson, who hurt his achilles against Australia, is likely to be fit for the next game. “Lockie Ferguson’s scan on his right achilles revealed no significant damage and it’s hoped he’ll be available for Saturday’s game against Pakistan in Bengaluru,” NZC said in a statement after the game.Related

South Africa go top as New Zealand slump to third straight defeat

World Cup Live Report – South Africa vs New Zealand, Pune

“We’re faced with a little bit of adversity with injuries,” New Zealand captain Tom Latham said at the presentation. “We need to see how they shape up tomorrow. Pretty quick turnaround in Bangalore so we need to reflect on this quickly and go into the next game with a positive mindset. We don’t become a bad team overnight.”Henry joined Ferguson, Mark Chapman (calf) and Kane Williamson (thumb) on New Zealand’s injury list, leaving them with only 11 fit players in their squad of 15. Ish Sodhi was used as a substitute fielder for Henry but when Tim Southee momentarily left the field, thoughts may have turned to who could field for New Zealand, because the playing conditions do not accommodate for travelling reserves to take the field. However, a male member of team management is permitted to take the place of a reserve fielder. That means that even though Tom Blundell is part of the touring party, should New Zealand have needed another substitute fielder, they would have had to call on batting coach Luke Ronchi. Blundell will only form part of the official squad if a player of the current fifteen is ruled out and the ICC approves a replacement. New Zealand initially also had Kyle Jamieson as a travelling reserve but he was sent home before Ferguson’s injury and has since played for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield.New Zealand’s campaign has been beset by injuries since their squad was named in September. Williamson and Southee were named in the touring group despite not having fully recovered from an ACL injury and thumb fracture respectively. Williamson returned for New Zealand’s third match against Bangladesh but then suffered a thumb fracture and is only expected to be available later in the tournament. Southee was available from New Zealand’s fifth match against India but was not selected; the match against South Africa was his first of the World Cup.After winning their first four World Cup matches, New Zealand have suffered three defeats in a row and are currently in fourth place with eight points.

Nottingham Forest now make contact to sign £20m "freak of nature" for Nuno

Nottingham Forest have now stepped up their interest in a £20m transfer target by making contact over a summer deal.

Marinakis ready to splash the cash for Nottingham Forest this summer

It promises to be an exciting end to the season on the pitch for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, who are on course to qualify for the Champions League in the manager’s first full season in charge.

Currently third in the Premier League table, Forest are currently six points clear of Manchester City who sit fifth, and the Reds are also preparing for an FA Cup quarter-final against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday evening.

Should Forest be preparing for Champions League football over the summer, it looks as if owner Evangelos Marinakis is ready to break the bank and spend big on some marquee signings.

Those at the City Ground have been linked with an ambitious move for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Victor Osimhen has also been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest, and domestically, Forest also have targets. Wolves star Matheus Cunha and Brentford forward Yoane Wissa are two of those with Forest working on deals, whereas Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham is of interest to the Reds.

Now, a new transfer update has emerged regarding Forest and Bellingham.

Forest make contact over signing Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham

According to TEAMtalk, Nottingham Forest have made contact over a deal for Bellingham this week, as the club step up their interest in the Championship star.

The 19-year-old is also being eyed by Manchester United, however, ‘Forest are pushing hard to secure his signing ahead of a huge summer of spending at the City Ground’.

Thought to be valued in the region of £20m, Bellingham would be keen to move and play at the highest level, should Sunderland miss out on promotion over the coming months.

Capable of playing as a defensive, central or attacking midfielder, Bellingham has already made more than 100 senior appearances during his career.

He’s caught the eye of his teammates as well, with fellow Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil calling him a “freak of nature” in the past: “He’s an absolute freak of nature, physically. I have never seen a 17-year-old that size. Technically, he is a top, top, player as well.”

Now, it looks as if a move to the City Ground for Bellingham could be a real possibility, and who knows, he could challenge the likes of Elliot Anderson, Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolas Dominguez for a starting spot in midfield during the 2025/26 season.

Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes India's 17th centurion on Test debut

The opener got there in 215 balls and put on a double-century stand with Rohit Sharma

Yashasvi Jaiswal has become the 17th India batter to score a century on Test debut, and the first to do so outside Asia in more than 21 years. The 21-year-old reached the milestone on the second afternoon of the Dominica Test, bringing it up with a standing sweep for a single off the part-time bowling of fellow debutant Alick Athanaze.Jaiswal opened the batting alongside captain Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill moving down to the No. 3 spot vacated by Cheteshwar Pujara’s axing. When he reached his hundred, off 215 balls, India were 205 for no loss after they had bowled West Indies out for 150 on day one.”It was an emotional moment for me,” Jaiswal said after the day’s play. “I enjoyed it quite a bit. I am still batting so I will try to play for as long as possible. This is just the start of my career, so now it will be about how focused and disciplined I can be going forward.”My effort [on the third day] will just be on how I can give a good start to the team. I will just focus on my process and trust on what I have practiced. I just have to go and keep playing.”Jaiswal has shown a remarkable appetite for runs in every format he has played. When he was called up for this West Indies tour as part of an India side picked with an eye on the future, he had scored 1845 first-class runs at an average of 80.21, with nine hundreds in just 26 innings. His List A career of 32 games already includes a double-hundred. And he was the fifth highest run-getter in IPL 2023, with his 625 runs coming at a strike rate of 163.61. Jaiswal has now brought that appetite to Test cricket.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“I thinks it’s about how I prepare mentally,” Jaiswal said when asked about his preparations. “Of course, fitness is very important. I try to follow my diet and discipline and try to stay in good shape. And I practice the way I need to prepare. I keep trying to bat according to possible scenarios and how I can do well on the team. The effort is to just try and play match-winning knocks.”I spoke to Rohit quite a bit while batting. He kept telling me how we can play on this wicket and where the runs can come from. And even before the game, the way he told me ‘you have to do it, you are the only person’, I kept thinking about that and how I can get my runs.”West Indies tested both openers even as they struggled to separate them, on a slow pitch that offered the spinners both turn and bounce. Right through his innings, Jaiswal was happy to show the patience he required to earn his run-scoring opportunities. He took 16 balls to get off the mark on the first evening, and began the second morning by shouldering arms five times in a row to Jason Holder. By the time he reached his hundred, he had left or defended 56 of the 104 balls he faced from West Indies’ fast bowlers. At the same time, he was also prepared to exploit gaps in the field with unorthodox shots. He got off the mark in Test cricket with an uppercut for four, and he reverse-swept Jomel Warrican against the turn for a boundary in the last over of day one. When required to, Jaiswal was able to shift a gear down and see out difficult periods. Having hit seven fours while scoring his first 51 runs off 104 balls, he hit no boundaries and scored just 19 runs off his next 80 balls, a period during which spinners Rahkeem Cornwall and Jomel Warrican beat both openers multiple times with sharp turn.Having got through that testing spell, though, and with Cornwall off the field with a chest infection, Jaiswal opened up after lunch: he rushed from 70 to 100 in just 31 balls, hitting four fours in that period including a dancing, inside-out drive off Warrican.Of the 16 previous India batters to score centuries on Test debut, only two – Shikhar Dhawan in 2013 and Prithvi Shaw in 2018 – opened the batting. And only five scored their debut hundreds outside Asia, with Virender Sehwag the last to do so, in Bloemfontein back in November 2001.Jaiswal’s innings also extended a proud run for players representing his Ranji Trophy team: the last four Test-debut centurions for India have all been Mumbai batters, with Rohit, Shaw and Shreyas Iyer the three before Jaiswal.
