Sky Sports: £150,000-a-week Man Utd star likely to leave for £0 in 2025

Prepared to get ruthless, Manchester United are now reportedly likely to show one player the door in a free deal to make room for two fresh faces in Ruben Amorim’s squad in the summer.

Man Utd transfer news

Unsurprisingly, the rumours have been coming thick and fast since Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford. There’s plenty of work to be done to undo the damage done by the last year or so of Erik ten Hag’s reign and the recruitment that coincided with the Dutchman’s time at the club. From central defence all the way to the new manager’s offensive line, there’s an argument that the Red Devils need to welcome fresh faces.

Offer ready: Amorim has personally requested Man Utd sign defender – report

He could become the first signing of the Amorim regime at Old Trafford.

With that said, names such as Viktor Gyokeres and Morten Hjulmand have already been mentioned regarding a move to Manchester United when 2025 arrives, with both potentially following Amorim from Sporting Club to the Premier League giants. Gyokeres is someone who instantly stands out these days, of course, given his place as one of Europe’s most clinical goalscorers.

As INEOS prepare for further incomings, however, they look set to open the exit door for one particular player. According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Christian Eriksen is now likely to leave Manchester United as a free agent when his current contract comes to an end in the summer and Amorim targets two midfield reinforcements.

The beginning of a new era, the Red Devils have no choice but to get ruthless when 2025 arrives, which should see an ageing Eriksen swapped out for a more ambitious option.

Eriksen exit could only be the start at Man Utd

The fact that a 32-year-old Eriksen on £150,000-a-week still has the quality to earn a starting place in the current Manchester United midfield is more of a comment on just how disappointing the Red Devils’ recruitment has been in the last two years rather than a credit to the Dane, himself.

Eriksen’s not the only one who has played a greater role than expected at times, either. It’s worth noting that 36-year-old Jonny Evans has gone from a player likely to act as more of a background and dressing room figure to an important part of Manchester United’s squad. Like Eriksen, the central defender should be swapped out for a younger option when the summer arrives.

On the midfield front, signing a familiar face for Amorim wouldn’t be a bad idea. Of course, INEOS will want to repeat the mistake they made with Ten Hag by reuniting the former Ajax manager with one player too many, but those like Hjulmand represent the calibre of midfielder that could step in alongside Manuel Ugarte to finally take a struggling Casemiro’s starting place.

Starting with Eriksen, INEOS must get ruthless when 2025 arrives.

Uncapped Mahmud replaces Shakib in Bangladesh's Test squad for New Zealand

Uncapped Fazle Mahmud has replaced Shakib Al Hasan in Bangladesh’s Test squad for the New Zealand tour after the star allrounder opted to skip the series.Mahmud, a left-handed top-order batter who also bowls left-arm spin occasionally, was the highest run-getter in Bangladesh’s first-class competition this season, making 603 runs at an average of 60.30. He made his ODI debut in October 2018, playing two games against Zimbabwe, but was out on zero in both matches.Shakib was initially named in the side, but he verbally informed the board of his reluctance to go to New Zealand where Bangladesh are scheduled to play two Tests in January. BCB president Nazmul Hassan approved his leave request once Shakib submitted a letter officially. However, Hassan added that the players would have to inform the board “officially” in order to seek leave. The New Zealand series will count towards the 2021-23 World Test Championship. The first Test is set to be played in Mount Maunganui from January 1 to 5, and the second in Christchurch from January 9 to 13. When Bangladesh toured New Zealand in 2021, the visitors lost all six matches – three ODIs and three T20Is. Their last Test tour was in 2019, which was abandoned midway, due to the Christchurch attack the day before the third Test.Meanwhile, Rangana Herath has rejoined the Bangladesh team as the spin bowling coach on a two-year contract. He was with the team from July to November this year for the T20 World Cup.Squad: Mominul Haque (capt), Shadman Islam, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Fazle Mahmud, Liton Das (wk), Nurul Hasan (wk), Yasir Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Abu Jayed, Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful Islam, Khaled Ahmed, Shohidul Islam, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Mohammad Naim

The third-division English side's supporters' trust announced on social media on Tuesday that they were offering tickets to the final of the Carabao Cup final to their members in a ballot draw. Exeter were eliminated from the first round of the competition last August after they lost 4-3 against Walsall on penalties.

Exeter's announcement left some fans of the Reds and Magpies fans confused. However, all EFL clubs are entitled to tickets for the final after entering the competition, and as the Grecians are a fan-owned club, they have decided to distribute them this way rather than hand them over to club officials and directors.

Eddie Howe's side progressed to the final of the competition for the second time in three years after beating Arsenal 2-0 twice over the two legs of their semi-final. The Premier League leaders, on the other hand, came back from a 1-0 deficit to thrash Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 in the second leg, and they will now defend their trophy at Wembley.

Aston Villa tracking Kamara repeat in £11.5k-p/w gem who plays like Modric

Aston Villa are looking to pull off an impressive Boubacar Kamara repeat to sign another free agent midfielder next summer, according to one report.

Aston Villa flush with midfielders

Though they sold Douglas Luiz in the summer to balance their books amid concerns about the Premier League’s financial fair play regulations, Unai Emery still has plenty of midfielders to choose from as things stand. They replaced the Brazilian with £50m addition Amadou Onana from fellow Premier League side Everton, while they also signed Ross Barkley from relegated Luton Town on what is reported to have been a three-year deal.

The 30-year-old Englishman adds yet more depth to a side that can already call upon Youri Tielemans and club captain John McGinn, though the latter is usually stationed on the left-hand side of midfield, while Jacob Ramsey and Morgan Rodgers can both be deployed in deeper areas if required.

That depth has helped the club get off to an excellent start so far this season, with Villa in fifth place as things stand as well as having won both of their opening Champions League fixtures including a mammoth home tie against German giants Bayern Munich.

They are also set to welcome back Boubacar Kamara from a long-term knee injury to strengthen their ranks yet further, but are well aware that with money tight after losses of £120m last year, they will have to be smart in the transfer market to continue to keep up with the Premier League giants that they are trying to compete with. With that in mind, they have joined the race for an in-demand free agent.

Aston Villa eye up Kamara repeat in Modric-esque midfielder

That is according to GiveMeSport, who claim that Unai Emery’s side have joined the race to sign new England star Angel Gomes from Lille. The former Manchester United midfielder has carved out an impressive career for himself since moving to France, and has been rewarded with a run of games in the England side under interim boss Lee Carsley.

His £11.5k per week deal in France comes to an end this summer though, and the 24-year-old is likely to have his pick of several clubs amid links to Tottenham, Manchester United and Newcastle. Now, Aston Villa have joined the race, with the Villans having managed a similar coup when they poached Kamara on a free transfer three years ago when his contract in Ligue 1 came to an end.

Though Gomes would be joining a well-stocked Villa midfield, he would offer something that they lack at present, with his cultured passing style and low centre of gravity a very different proposition to any of Tielemans, Kamara or Onana.

Indeed, stat site FBRef likens his playstyle to Real Madrid icon Luka Modric, who enjoyed an excellent spell in the Premier League with Tottenham, and who is also known for outside of the boot passes like that displayed by Gomes in the above video against Finland.

A full England international on a free transfer may well be too good for Villa to pass up, especially given that Gomes is likely to be entering the prime of his career.

London Spirit 142 for 6 (Rossington 46) beat Manchester Originals 136 for 9 (Ackermann 53, Wheal 4-17) by six runsBrad Wheal claimed the stunning figures of 4 for 17 to help London Spirit claim their first win in six men’s Hundred games and deal a blow to the Manchester Originals in the process.Hampshire’s Scottish fast bowler, a replacement for Mark Wood and making his Hundred debut, helped Spirit defend 143 after Originals slipped from relative comfort at 126 for 4 after 88 balls.Wheal bowled Phil Salt early in a chase which recovered from 21 for 3 after 16 balls before returning to get key man Colin Ackermann for 53 as Originals slipped to five down. He then defended nine off the last five with the wickets of Calvin Harrison and Fred Klaassen. While this six-run win is just consolation for Spirit, Originals missed the opportunity to go joint top. A spin friendly Emirates Old Trafford surface ultimately saw a game watched by a 14,000 strong crowd decided by a seamer in 24-year-old Wheal.Adam Rossington top-scored with 46 off 29 for Spirit, while Originals spinners Tom Hartley claimed 3 for 27 and Matthew Parkinson 2 for 18. The latter also took a stunning one-handed catch.Rossington had lofted Parkinson’s first ball for a straight six, gaining some revenge for his famous dismissal to the ‘new ball of the century’ here in an April Championship match whilst playing for Northamptonshire. But the Rossington-Parkinson connection was not finished, with the latter backpedalling at short third to cling on one-handed, having leapt high to intercept a reverse sweep at Hartley.Salt clubbed Roelof van der Merwe for three off-side boundaries in the first five balls of the chase, but he was one of the three early wickets.Mohammad Nabi claimed two of them with his off-spin. The first was Joe Clarke brilliantly caught at wide long-on by Mason Crane before Colin Munro holed out at cover. Wheal then bowled Salt. But Ackermann engineered the revival with the help of Tom Lammonby – the fourth-wicket pair sharing 66.Captain Carlos Brathwaite also hit three sixes in a quick-fire 30, but he fell to Blake Cullen in the penultimate set of five following Ackermann’s dismissal.Wheal then bowled Harrison and had Klaassen hit-wicket either side of the run-out of Hartley. Greenwood is the latest addition to City's ever-growing injury list, which already includes Lauren Hemp, Vivianne Miedema, Khadija Shaw, Chloe Kelly, Risa Shimizu and Sandy MacIver. The club gave no timeframe for Greenwood's return.

WHAT NEXT FOR GREENWOOD AND MAN CITY?

The good news is that City do not have a fixture now until January, with the Women's Super League entering its winter break. Gareth Taylor's side will next be in action on January 12, when they take on third-tier Ipswich Town in the FA Cup. However, it seems likely Greenwood will be out for a little while longer yet.

Top target: Aston Villa looking at Watkins 2.0 in £65k-p/w star

Aston Villa enter the final few days of the transfer window hoping they can entice another big name to join the club.

Qualification for the Champions League has allowed Unai Emery to lure the likes of Amadou Onana and Ian Maatsen to Villa Park. Will there be one final signing before the deadline on Friday?

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

It appears the club have a current Premier League player on their shortlist as they look to bolster their attacking options.

Aston Villa eye late move for Chelsea striker

According to Caught Offside, the Midlands side are open to the idea of adding another striker to their squad before Friday. There are a few different names on the shortlist, but it looks as though Chelsea centre-forward Nicolas Jackson is the preferred option.

The report states Emery has monitored him for over a year as the manager is evaluating whether there is room to make a concrete offer for him in the coming days.

The £65k-per-week hitman would add something different to the Villa attack and, with a single season of Premier League experience behind him, could be a solid purchase this summer.

Nicolas Jackson’s season in numbers

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig hailed Jackson as “superb” towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign after he scored in four successive La Liga matches, claiming the striker was “one of the best La Liga players in recent weeks” due to his displays.

It didn’t take long for the Blues to make their move, signing him that summer from Villarreal. His debut season in England yielded 17 goals and six assists across 44 matches for the Blues, a decent, if unspectacular, return in front of goal.

Among his teammates, he ranked second for goals and assists (19) in the top flight, along with ranking second for shots on target per game (1.2) and for successful dribbles each match (1.5), underling how important he was.

Ollie Watkins may have scored 27 goals last season, but the next highest goalscorer at the club was winger Leon Bailey with 14 goals, suggesting the need for another striker.

Jackson, according to FBref, is the sixth-most comparable player to Watkins. Considering how good the Englishman was last season, signing a player who plays like him would be advantageous for Emery, even if Jackson is something of a "rough diamond" according to pundit Paul Merson.

Indeed, the duo registered similar statistics in the Premier League last season with regard to shots on target per 90 (1.22 vs 1.31), shot-creating actions per 90 (3.05 vs 2.8), successful take-on percentage (51.4% vs 41.3%) and aerial duels won (35 vs 49).

Much will depend on Jackson’s price tag, but if there is any realistic chance of signing the Senegal international, then a concrete move should be made.

He and Watkins could combine to devastating effect this season for Villa, especially given their likeness, and it could fire the club back into the top four of the table.

The next few days will be interesting, to say the least.

Fewer touches than Meslier: Farke must drop 4/10 Leeds man after West Brom

Leeds United's lacklustre start to the new season continued away in the Midlands on Saturday afternoon, Daniel Farke's men left to take a point from the Hawthorns following a 0-0 draw with West Brom.

To be honest, it was a pretty decent point considering what's happened over the last week.

Leeds drew 3-3 with Portsmouth on the opening day before being hammered by Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup in midweek as they shipped six goals in their opening two matches for the first time since 1959. Yeah…it's not great, is it?

Then came the hammer blow of losing Georginio Rutter and his absence was more than felt this weekend. Leeds had just six touches in the opposition box, the lowest throughout Farke's entire managerial career.

Going into the break, they only had a 50% pass accuracy in the final third. It makes for grim reading.

The latest on Rutter's future

Just hours after Leeds had suffered defeat to Boro, it was confirmed that Brighton had activated Rutter's £40m release clause.

It was heartbreaking, it was anguish, particularly for a fan base who have already seen Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville walk through the exit door.

So, when will Rutter be confirmed? Well, Farke admitted during his pre-match press conference that he had already said his goodbyes to the squad.

Leeds paid £25m for him in 2023 so they are making a mighty fine profit on the player. That said, the prize of reaching the Premier League would bring even greater riches and they may well struggle to get there now without the Frenchman and Summerville.

Joel Piroe was the man to replace Rutter against the Baggies on Saturday but didn't take his chance to shine in a worrying display.

Piroe's performance in numbers

The Dutchman has rather flattered to deceive since being signed from Swansea City last summer.

During the 2023/24 campaign, Piroe registered a haul of 16 goals and three assists, but struggled in the number 10 role, despite 50% of his strikes coming from that position in the team.

Leeds duo Ethan Ampadu and Joel Piroe.

As a result, it was frustrating for supporters to see Piroe selected in that area of the field again against West Brom.

Hauled off after 64 minutes for Joe Rothwell, he vacated the pitch having had 23 touches, far fewer than goalkeeper Illan Meslier's 49 touches.

The 25-year-old registered a dismal haul of just six passes, of which none created a goalscoring opportunity. For someone playing a role such as Piroe's, you should be expected to create. After all, Rutter ended last term with 16 assists, 13 more than his Dutch colleague.

To make matters worse, the former Swansea man ceded possession 13 times and won just one of his eight duels.

The attacker was subsequently slated after the game as he was handed a 4/10 match rating by journalist Beren Cross who described his outing as 'a familiar and poor display' which 'left a lot to be desired'.

Leeds could also lose Willy Gnonto this summer

So, it wasn't a great audition from Piroe as Farke attempts to solve the Rutter-shaped hole in his side.

It's a long old season and Leeds will surely improve but the omens are not good if an internal solution is sought in that number 10 role. For their next clash, the manager must try something else and put Piroe back on the bench.

Leeds hit gold on Bielsa signing who's now worth even more than Rutter

Leeds United managed to sell this former star on for a huge amount.
