Suggestion Arsenal could sign £42m Bayern Munich winger on loan in January

Arsenal have been tipped to go after a new wide player in the January transfer window following injuries to Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling, and it is now suggested that a Bayern Munich star could be up for grabs on a temporary deal.

Bukayo Saka out until March as Arsenal target new winger

On Friday, manager Mikel Arteta shared the news that Saka could be out until March after undergoing surgery on his hamstring problem.

The England star was forced off in the 24th minute during Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend, with news then emerging that Saka was set for a lengthy absence in what is a real blow for Arsenal.

Arteta has since confirmed the expected timeline for Saka’s recovery, and it makes for grim reading, as the 23-year-old appears likely to be sidelined for over two months.

“He had a procedure,” said Arteta in his post-Ipswich press conference.

“Everything went well, but unfortunately he will be out for many, many weeks. I said many weeks, so I think it will be more than two months. I don’t know exactly how much longer.

“It will depend on how the scar tissue starts to heal, the first week or so, the mobility of that. Let’s see, it’s very difficult to say.”

Gabriel Martinelli played on the right wing in place of Saka during Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Ipswich on Friday, while Gabriel Jesus can also play out wide when required, so there are existing options at Arteta’s disposal.

However, credible media sources have shared that Arsenal are scouring the market for a new winger in January (The Athletic), with targets for the position emerging over the last week.

Dani Olmo is reportedly on Arsenal’s radar heading into the new year as the Spain international could leave Barcelona for free next month due to ongoing registration issues with La Liga.

Depending on developments, it could become the biggest available bargain of the January window, leaving little wonder that Arsenal are monitoring this situation.

Suggestion Arsenal could sign Kingsley Coman on loan in January

Olmo isn’t their only potential target, though, with reliable journalist Simon Collings of Standard Sport hinting that Bayern winger Kingsley Coman may be up for grabs.

The France international, who commanded a price tag of around £42 million in the last transfer window, has bagged four goals and two assists in 19 appearances across all competitions this season.

Bayern's Kingsley Coman

Collings suggests that Arsenal could have the option of signing Coman on loan from Bayern when the window reopens, and listed the 28-year-old as a possible incoming for the Gunners when discussing their activity for January.

Coman’s extensive injury record is a cause for concern when evaluating a possible swoop, but there is little denying his quality when fit, available and firing.

“King is one of the most important players for us,” said former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann in 2022.

“He has the ability to solve any one-on-one situation on the pitch. King is one of the best players in Europe when it comes to wingers. He’s also a brilliant character and an important part of the dressing room.”

O’Neil can save his job by ditching 3/10 dud for "sensational" Wolves star

Gary O’Neil will be feeling the pressure again in the Wolverhampton Wanderers hot seat after his side fell to a crushing 4-2 defeat to AFC Bournemouth last time out.

Consequently, the Old Gold find themselves in 18th position in the early Premier League standings, with speculation over the Englishman’s future set to rumble on, following prior reports earlier in the campaign that his role was under imminent threat.

The 41-year-old will be hopeful of a change in fortunes up next, however, when his side travel to Everton in a crucial match near the foot of the top-flight table.

In order to pick up a positive result – after such a sobering loss to the Cherries – O’Neil could be prepared to drop one first-team star against the Toffees, after the Wolves man put in a horror show performance at Molineux.

The Wolves star who must be dropped vs Everton

The goalkeeper position has been a source of concern at Wolves all season long, with the relegation-threatened outfit now up to 32 goals leaked from 13 games in the Premier League.

Four of those were shipped by Jose Sa against Andoni Iraola’s visitors in somewhat of a comical fashion, as the Cherries couldn’t believe their luck on the day as a hat-trick of penalties were awarded in their favour.

Justin Kluivert would tuck away all three for his South Coast employers, with the first spot-kick going Bournemouth’s way after Toti Gomes clattered into the goalscorer after just three minutes.

But, the other two incidents saw Sa have an afternoon to forget, as the unlucky ‘keeper connected with Evanilson’s leg for the second spot-kick, whilst the third and final penalty of the day saw the 31-year-old bundle into the Brazilian striker again after a poor back-pass caught him napping.

In truth, the ex-FC Porto man wasn’t helped whatsoever by his defenders in the shocking 4-2 loss, but O’Neil will know he needs a ‘keeper he can rely on moving forward away from the error-prone number one.

Express and Star journalist Lewis Keen would dish out a low 3/10 rating to Sa after the dust had settled on the poor defeat, stating that he made ‘countless’ errors across the duration of the topsy-turvy 90 minutes.

Consequently, it could be likely that Sa is dropped from the Old Gold first team for the trip to Goodison Park, as Sam Johnstone waits eagerly in the wings for a chance in between the sticks.

The Wolves star who O'Neil must now unleash

It’s not as if Johnstone has found it any easier to keep the goals out when called into action by O’Neil this campaign so far, with 13 strikes conceded from five Premier League outings.

But, the four-time senior England international is surely worthy of another chance in the first-team spotlight, especially after Sa’s woes versus Bournemouth.

Moreover, the “sensational” shot-stopper – as he was once labelled by Gary Lineker – has proven himself to be a top performer in the Premier League prior to his move to Wolves in the summer, with 75 clean sheets amassed when playing for near neighbours West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa.

However, he will have to prove himself in the here and now for O’Neil’s men if he is thrown into the starting XI shortly, considering Wolves have just one clean sheet next to their name this season in league action.

But, the former Baggies man has shone in the top-flight even when his team have succumbed to more action-packed defeats, with Johnstone leaving the 5-3 defeat to Brentford at the start of October with his head held high by registering seven saves.

He’ll just pray he can keep a clean sheet if selected for the clash with the Toffees, who haven’t been the most eye-catching team to watch under Sean Dyche recently, with only ten goals scored in the Premier League.

Sam Johnstone

O’Neil cannot afford another calamitous showing from his chosen goalkeeper on the road, with his job perhaps on the line if the goal-shy hosts embarrass the Wolves defence once more.

European club want Rohl with Southampton in concern for Sheffield Wednesday

Following earlier links to the vacant Southampton job, reports in Germany are now suggesting that Danny Rohl has been identified as a candidate for the managerial role at a European club in another concern for Sheffield Wednesday.

Rohl is a man in demand

Ask anyone who’s been keeping track of his progress and they’ll tell you that recent interest in Rohl should come as no surprise. Still just 35 years old, the German has dragged Sheffield Wednesday from relegation concerns all the way into the top half of the Championship in what should be applauded as a fantastic achievement. Now, however, the Owls could fall victim to their own manager’s success.

Club now impressed after scouting Sheffield Wednesday ace ahead of January

They are eyeing up one of Rohl’s young talents ahead of the winter window opening.

1 ByBen Browning Dec 6, 2024

Having shown Russell Martin the door a matter of hours after his side’s 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton are on the hunt for the manager they believe will keep them up and, as such, Rohl’s name has been mentioned in recent days.

It would, of course, be quite the step up for such a young manager, but also one to watch on with intrigue. But the Saints aren’t the only club interested, it seems.

According to reports in Germany, as relayed by The Star’s Joe Crann, Hamburger SV have now identified Rohl as a candidate for their vacant managerial role. The 2. Bundesliga side showed Steffan Baumgart the door at the end of November after just one win in five games and have been searching for a permanent replacement without any success ever since.

For now, Rohl remains in charge of the Owls ahead of this weekend’s clash against Stoke City in the Championship, but whether that will remain the case in the coming months is yet to be seen.

Sheffield Wednesday need Rohl contingency

Breaking the constant trend of football management, the ball appears to be in the coach’s court rather than the club’s when it comes to his future. Rohl has built up a luxurious position in which his job is secure and a big move looks on the horizon. Whether he takes one of those big jobs is anyone’s guess at this stage, but he’s certainly capable.

With that being the case though, Sheffield Wednesday must think about a potential contingency plan. They must take a look at what life would be like without the ever-impressive Rohl at the helm. And they must ensure that their reality without him doesn’t involve relegation back down to League One.

Still 35 years old, meanwhile, the Owls boss should be in no major rush. After all, get the next move wrong and the current reputation that he’s built up will quickly be diminished, perhaps making Southampton the wrong choice and a drop down to 2. Bundesliga an unambitious move.

Whilst he is still at the helm, it seems as though Sheffield United should simply enjoy the run that Rohl currently has them on, striding towards a top-half finish.

"Ambitious" manager leading race to replace Cooper after Leicester talks

An “ambitious” manager is now leading the race to replace Steve Cooper after holding Leicester City talks, according to a new report.

The Foxes are looking for their third manager in over 18 months, as the club announced the dismissal of Cooper on Sunday.

Leicester City eyeing move for wildcard 4-3-3 manager as Potter alternative

Leicester City have their eye on a manager who has recently managed in the Premier League.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 26, 2024 Leicester are looking for a new manager

It has been an inconsistent start to the campaign for Leicester, as they started it by picking up a decent point at home to Tottenham Hotspur. But they then suffered poor defeats against sides that would be in and around them in the table, and that started to put the pressure on Cooper.

The Foxes are winless in their last five games in all competitions, and they have only won two games in the league, and they came at the beginning of October against Bournemouth and Southampton. Former Leicester player Matt Piper believes the timing to sack Cooper is “strange” and hopes they resolve it soon.

He said: “What I’m most shocked about is the really strange timing. The more I think of it, it’s such strange timing; you get beat by Man Utd (3-0), and it’s the worst performance of the season by a country mile – we just didn’t turn up.

“Then you’ve got a two-week international break, you leave the manager in, you get beat by Chelsea, and then you sack him. It’s strange timing – I can understand that timeline if they think, ‘right we’ve got to move Steve on,’ but they’ve spoken to someone else, and they’re ready to go – then it makes sense.

“But, the club have come out and said that’s not the case. We did this before, and it bit us on the backside. I hope they’ve not gone down that line again, because the last time we did that it didn’t work out well at all.”

The search for Cooper’s replacement could be over sooner rather than later, as there is now a new leader in the race.

Ruud van Nistelrooy leading race to replace Cooper after Leicester talks

According to Football Insider, Ruud van Nistelrooy is now closing in on becoming Leicester City’s new manager after holding talks with the club. The Foxes are just a couple of days into their search for a new manager, and they may be hoping to have an appointment before their game against Brentford on the weekend.

Van Nistelrooy, who has been described as “very ambitious and very driven” by Erik ten Hag, is currently out of work after leaving Manchester United a couple of weeks ago. The Dutchman returned to Old Trafford in the summer to join Ten Hag’s coaching staff, and then he found himself as interim manager after Ten Hag’s sacking.

The 48-year-old won three of his four games in charge, two of which came against Leicester, but Ruben Amorim decided he wanted to have his own staff in place as he took over. That spell at United has seemingly put Van Nistelrooy back on the football map, and Bundesliga 2 side Hamburger SV are interested in appointing him as their new manager, but he also has interest from Leicester.

The Foxes have held talks with Van Nistelrooy, as they are aware of interest from Germany, and that has now put him as the favourite ahead of David Moyes and Graham Potter, who have also been linked with the vacant role. The Leicester job may be a more appealing offer over Hamburg for the Dutchman, given he can remain working in the Premier League.

Travis Head feels a better player after experiences of last 12 months

Travis Head believes he is a better batter than when he last played for Australia ahead of next week’s crucial duel with Usman Khawaja.Selectors now have two big calls to make ahead of the first Ashes Test on December 8 at the Gabba, with who tosses the coin for Australia likely to capture all headlines. But the battle for the middle-order spot remains crucial for two players who have spent their entire careers coming in and out of the Test side and therefore not feeling the head of the current battle.Related

Head and Khawaja will first meet in Adelaide on Tuesday for a Sheffield Shield match, before a domestic one-day game follows. Beyond that, selectors can also use an intrasquad game in Queensland at the start of December to settle on the No. 5 spot. The in-form Khawaja last played for Australia in the 2019 Ashes, while Head’s last chance came at the Boxing Day Test last year after five innings below 40.Head averaged 68.69 for South Australia last summer and has started this season with a Shield century and one-day double-ton. “I was probably chasing my tail a bit,” Head said. “But I’ve experienced a lot [since last playing for Australia], gone to England. Been in and out the team. Dealt with those things, come back been stronger, been better. I’ve been consistent over the last 12 or 18 months. So I hope [I am a better player].”And I hope next week I’m a better player than this week. I’m working hard and continuing that and fingers crossed.”Head can also see other advantages out of his England jaunt. He worked closely with England quick Ollie Robinson, who has taken 28 wickets in his five Tests since debuting in June. His 196-centimetre frame has also seen the right-armer compared to Josh Hazlewood, with Australia’s wickets expected to suit him.”He is the standout that I’ve probably seen the most of,” Head said. “He’s probably going to be their banker. He was unbelievable for them during the summer. He was probably their go-to man.”A lot of people have liked him to Hoff [Hazlewood], with a slightly taller and slightly harder length. He had a lot of success here in the A tours a few years ago.”

Shaun Marsh guides Western Australia home against ragged Redbacks

The match was frequently interrupted by rain with the chase eventually trimmed to 27 overs

AAP25-Oct-2021Shaun Marsh struck an unbeaten half-century to guide Western Australia to a six-wicket win over South Australia in a rain-affected one-day clash at the WACA Ground. In a match with four rain delays, WA were originally set a victory target of 199 off 35 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern system, before that was revised down to 165 off 27 overs.WA slipped to 4 for 74, but Marsh (80 no off 63 balls) and D’Arcy Short (35 no off 27 balls) got the home side over the line with an unbeaten 93-run stand. Marsh cracked 11 fours and a six in his classy knock. The game was still delicately poised with three overs to go and WA needing 29 runs for victory, but South Australia unravelled from that point. Brendan Doggett bowled a delivery so wide that it didn’t even hit the pitch, with WA peeling 12 runs off his wayward over.Wes Agar fared even worse straight after, bowling two no-balls and a wide to start the over. Short made him pay, thumping a six off one of the free hits, before Marsh cracked two boundaries later in the over to secure victory with eight balls to spare. Agar’s over, which consisted of only four legal deliveries, ended up costing 19 runs.Earlier, the Redbacks compiled a total of 6 for 193 off 35 during an innings that was disrupted three times by rain. Opener Jake Weatherald top-scored for the visitors with 60 off 81 balls, while Daniel Worrall (31no off 25 balls) and Nathan McAndrew (21no off 15 balls) combined for an unbeaten 55-run partnership to boost South Australia’s score.Dangerman Travis Head, who had posted scores of 163 and 230 in his two previous one-day knocks this season, was out for 28 when he edged Lance Morris behind. The Redbacks were struggling at 3 for 48 in the ninth over, but the second rain delay allowed them to regroup and stop the wobbles. Matt Kelly dismissed Weatherald and Ryan Gibson in consecutive balls later in the innings. Kelly’s hat-trick ball was a cracker, with Worrall almost edging it behind.WA allrounder Cameron Green, who is vying for an Ashes berth, returned figures of 1 for 38 off seven overs.

100% dribbles: Newcastle’s 8/10 star was even better than Gordon v Man City

Rodri’s absence was always going to knock Manchester City off-kilter, but Newcastle United knew that Saturday’s Premier League fixture was still going to be one of the toughest of the campaign.

But Newcastle played with assurance and gusto and claimed a hard-fought draw, rallying after falling behind in the first half to restore parity through Anthony Gordon’s penalty and cranking up late pressure that unfortunately came to nought.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe will be delighted with many of the performances on show at St. James’ Park, with the goalscorer doing extremely well in the absence of the injured Alexander Isak.

Anthony Gordon proves his worth vs Man City

Isak was ruled out with a toe injury to compound his frustrating start to the season, but Gordon is a dynamic forward and moonlit in a focal striking role on occasion, so he was tasked with the occasion against the indomitable champions today.

He certainly didn’t produce the greatest performance in the world, but Gordon did well against titanic opposition, winning and converting the second-half penalty to make it 11 points from six contests – only three behind Pep Guardiola’s side.

A real menace of a player, the England international has now won seven penalties in the Premier League since the start of last season, the most in the division – Raheem Sterling is second with three.

He also completed two key passes and won four duels, as per Sofascore, but his spot kick was the sole shot of his afternoon and you can’t help but think Isak, fit and available, might have offered that predatory sense that could have won the hosts the game.

Of course, with Rodri out of action, Bruno Guimaraes was able to showcase his quality and dominate from the centre of the park. He was Howe’s real hero.

Bruno Guimaraes was Howe's real hero

Guimaraes was at fault for Fulham’s third goal at Craven Cottage last weekend to condemn the Toon to their first defeat of the campaign, but he made amends today with a fine display against a City side that needed to bounce back after drawing with Arsenal one week ago.

Bruno Guimaraes against Manchester City

The Shields Gazette were gushing in their review of the Brazilian’s performance, handing him an 8/10 match rating and writing: ‘Imposed himself well against a strong City midfield. Had some good moments on the ball and played Gordon through. A good response to a difficult match late time out at Fulham.’

City might have been missing Rodri but let’s not forget that they still boast some of the best midfielders in the world. Mateo Kovacic and Rico Lewis were strong and City actually won 55% of the game’s ground duels.

Most of Newcastle’s success in combative situations seemed to have come from Guimaraes, who, as you can see, won a ridiculous amount of duels and stood like an iron wall against City’s attempted onslaughts that never really materialised. There was also silk to match the steel as he successfully completed all four of his attempted dribbles.

Newcastle will look at forthcoming Premier League fixtures against Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion with sights set on victory, but this was an excellent performance against the best team in the country, with signs aplenty that the Magpies are starting to click into gear.
