A informação é do portal ‘ge’.

Harry Kane is on his way to becoming England's GOAT – but Trent Alexander Arnold's international future looks uncertain again: Winners & losers from the Three Lions' win over Latvia as Thomas Tuchel's reunion with Reece James bears fruit

England won both games in Tuchel's first international window in charge and we have a clearer picture of who he rates moving forward

England's 3-0 win against Latvia provided another window into Thomas Tuchel's world, with the Three Lions emerging victorious in both of his first two games under his tutelage.

Friday's triumph over Albania felt as routine as they could come despite the fanfare and hullabaloo heading into the German's debut in the Wembley dugout, with Monday's further three points in World Cup qualifying providing a different sort of test.

Albania sat in deep and played without any adventure whatsoever, but Latvia from the off sought to hit the hosts on the counter. Nevertheless, despite a couple of early scares, England were able to largely keep them at bay.

Reece James got the Three Lions on their way with a superb free-kick from distance on the stroke of half-time, while Harry Kane and Eberechi Eze added goals in the second half to beef up the scoreline.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Wembley Stadium…

Getty Images SportWINNER: Harry Kane

No England player had ever scored 70 goals for their country before Kane netted against Albania at the end of last week. His latest strike – a tap-in at the end of a Declan Rice through ball which scythed through the Latvia box like butter – took him to 71, 17 clear of Wayne Rooney in second place, 54 ahead of the closest active challenger in Marcus Rashford.

Sure, goals in games against minnows are bread and butter to the Bayern Munich striker, but you still have to go out there and get them. In the history of the England national team, there hasn't been a single better scorer, no one even close to being as prolific.

Kane said prior to the Albania win that he believed Tuchel intended to use him as more of an outright No.9, which would in turn limit his freedom to drop deep. That game plan went out the window and he found himself involved all over the pitch that night. On this occasion, Tuchel clearly told him to get within the width of the posts again and stay there. There were a couple of chances that came and went before the 31-year-old got on the scoresheet, and this relentless lust for goals paid off with a tap-in at the back post when Latvia's defenders became mentally weary.

There's also another record within Kane's sights – Peter Shilton's top tally of 125 England caps. He is now only 20 matches away from matching that number. Should Kane become both the leading appearance holder and record scorer, he may not even need to win an international tournament to be considered the best Three Lions player of all time.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWINNER: Reece James

There's never been much doubt over James' ability as a footballer, his technique or his touch, his proficiency in all three thirds of the pitch. If his body can hold up, then he's one hell of a player and not many better in his position.

The first manager to truly unlock James' potential was Tuchel, who pushed him as both a wing-back and centre-back in his days as Chelsea boss, and there will always be a special connection between the two. When James' fitness issues began to recur at Stamford Bridge, that's when the German's decline began, so it's no coincidence or surprise he's trying to make up for lost time again.

James' stunning free-kick from 25 yards was a neat reminder of what he can bring to the fold. Tuchel knows more than anyone else, but it was a timely wake-up call to those still sleeping on who the Chelsea captain can be.

Getty ImagesLOSERS: Trent Alexander-Arnold & Kyle Walker

James' gain is Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker's loss. They were Sir Gareth Southgate's preferred right-backs of choice heading into Euro 2024 last summer, though may not get as much of a look if everyone is fully fit.

Walker is perhaps a little lucky to even still be in England consideration having stumbled through a pretty bleak season on a stark decline to this point. Tuchel has maintained he wants experience and leaders in his setup, yet those are the only two characteristics keeping the veteran 34-year-old in the frame.

There's still hope for Alexander-Arnold despite the manager's warning that he isn't afraid to leave star names at home. An astute tactician like Tuchel find a use for one of the game's most unique right-backs. Let's just hope it's not in a basic midfield role again, eh?

Getty Images SportLOSER: Jack Grealish

On a similar note, Jack Grealish continues to tumble down the pecking order for his country. His omission from this camp was unsurprising considering his form, which Tuchel confirmed as the main reason for leaving him behind.

"I love Jack," he said earlier this month. "I love everything about him – his personality, I love his quality, the guy has courage, he can take the heat, he is not affected if the Bernabeu whistles him. So is he a player who can be available and have an impact in our squad? Yes – 100 per cent. But lately he simply has no rhythm, and he knows that himself. I think Jack gets better and better the more minutes he plays. He has the character to be the glue in a team, it is easy for youngsters to attach to him."

So when exactly will Grealish find that 'rhythm' again? It almost certainly won't come at a rebuilding Manchester City. Many Premier League clubs will baulk at any asking price and his substantial wage packet.

The hope for Grealish is also his hindrance – Tuchel has leant heavily on the previously maligned Marcus Rashford this past fortnight and clearly sees the Aston Villa loanee as a key building block for next summer's World Cup. Rashford ought to serve as both inspiration for an out-of-sorts Grealish, yet he also represents an obstacle on his path back into the England XI.

Ravi Shastri: India will be looking for an allrounder who can bat No. 6

Former India coach, who joins ESPNcricinfo as an analyst for the IPL, says Hardik will struggle to make the national team as a pure batter

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Mar-20222:13

Ravi Shastri: ‘Captaincy might bring out the best in Hardik Pandya’

Former India coach Ravi Shastri – who will join ESPNcricinfo as an analyst for IPL 2022 – believes the national team is still in search of a first-choice allrounder. There has been a lot of focus on India’s T20 cricket ever since they suffered a group stage exit in the last World Cup. With another one coming up in only seven months’ time, the team management will be looking at the IPL for signs of players who can take on that two-in-one role and lend more balance to the XI.”I think the allrounder’s position at No. 6 for sure,” Shastri said on Wednesday. “Ideally someone in the top-five who can bowl two or three overs. That takes the pressure off the captain. It gives him then six and a half bowlers from whom he can choose. That will be one area I’ll be looking at very closely. And of course the fast bowling and fielding. I’m not really worried about the batting. Batting is there.”Hardik Pandya appeared to be the answer to the biggest of those questions but then he suffered a stress fracture of the back and has never been the same again. In particular, he’s not been able to take on his usual bowling workloads but, in a sign of how much he still has to offer, the 28-year old has been made captain of an IPL team for the first time by Gujarat Titans.Shastri on Pandya: ‘If he bowls with even limited success, he becomes an automatic choice in the Indian team.’•AFP/Getty ImagesStill, Shastri thinks Hardik will now struggle to break into the Indian T20 side as a pure batter because it is already full of power-hitters. “In the top five, there’s a lot of muscle there. If anyone’s occupying the position Nos. 5, 6 onwards, he’ll have to bring that extra department to the game. That is why from Hardik’s point of view, from India’s point of view, from the Gujarat team’s point of view, it’s extremely important that he strings those two or three overs together because if he does and bowls with even limited success, he becomes an automatic choice in the Indian team.”Shastri said the IPL might also shed some light on who could be the next India captain.”Rohit [Sharma]’s not getting any younger. Neither is Virat [Kohli]. They’ll have to look at who might be the captain two years, three years down the line. So that’s where I’ll be looking at. I’ll be looking at Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals). I’ll be looking at Shreyas Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders). Very closely. Of course KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants), the way he handles that side. And Hardik for the simple reason if that can energise him in a manner that can make him come out and play with gay abandon.”

Arsenal must finally sell £3m flop who was supposed to be the next Saka

The atmosphere among the fans and the team might not be ideal at the moment, but in the grand scheme of things, Arsenal are a club transformed and one on the right path.

When Mikel Arteta took over in December 2019, the team were a midtable side with few genuine stars at the club, but flash forward to today, and the team is full of them.

From David Raya and William Saliba at the back to Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard in midfield right up to Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka in attack, the North Londoners are a team brimming with exceptional talent.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka

Moreover, Saka has become more than just a star player; he has become the face of the team, so when another of Arteta’s signings was compared to him a couple of years ago, fans got excited, although based on how things have gone since, the comparison couldn’t have been more wrong.

Saka's Arsenal career

Former manager Unai Emery gave Saka his Arsenal debut in a Europa League clash with Vorskla Poltava in November 2018 before handing him his full debut against Qarabag FK a month later.

However, it was under Arteta the following season that the Hale Ender was given a proper run of games in the first team.

He ended the 19/20 campaign with 38 appearances to his name, in which he scored four goals and provided 12 assists, and had proven to the new manager that he would be an integral part of his rebuild.

The following years only saw the Ealing-born icon’s importance to the team grow, and by the time the club launched an unexpected title charge in the 22/23 season, he was a fully-fledged star of the Premier League.

Unsurprisingly, following his sensational form that season, which saw the 43-capped international score 15 goals and provide 11 assists in 48 games, the club decided to tie him down with a new four-year deal worth a reported £200k-per-week with an additional £100k-per-week available in bonuses.

Such a massive contract at just 21 years old could be enough to send a lot of young footballers off the rails, but not the Gunners’ number seven, who once again focused on the job at hand and put in another barnstorming effort last season, ending the year with a seriously impressive haul of 20 goals and 14 assists in 47 games.

It’s been much of the same this year, as while his teammates have struggled here and there, the 23-year-old has already amassed a tally of four goals and seven assists in 15 appearances, which equates to an average of a goal involvement once every 1.36 games.

Overall, Saka has become, without a doubt, Arsenal’s most important and impactful player in the last few years, and so, when another young winger signed by Arteta was compared to him in 2022, there were more than a few eyebrows raised.

The Arteta signing compared to Saka

The signing in question is Brazilian winger Marquinhos, who Arteta signed from São Paulo in June 2022 for just £3m.

Due to the “explosive” young talent, as dubbed by content creator Alexander Moneypenny, being just 19 at the time of the transfer, there was an expectation that he was a signing for the future, but just a few months into his life in North London, he was given a chance to start in a Europa League game away to Swiss outfit FC Zurich.

It was a decision that more than paid off on the night, as thanks to a great ball across the box from Eddie Nketiah, he opened the scoring in the 14th minute and then repaid the favour in the 62nd minute, putting an exquisite cross into the box for the Englishman to head home.

It was a dream debut for the Brazilian and led to more than a little hyperbole in the media, with former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell describing the youngster as “a little bit different to Saka but he is still as devastating.”

Meanwhile, another former great, Martin Keown, went a step further, saying “it was like Saka in that position, it’s almost a copycat performance.”

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Unfortunately, both men would be proven very wrong over the following years, as the former São Paulo ace struggled to make it back into the team following that performance and was sent on loan to Norwich City in January 2023, where he struggled to make an impact, coming back to N5 that summer with a single goal and assist to his name in 11 games.

A couple of months late, the then-20-year-old was sent to Ligue 1 side Nantes for the following season, but after once again struggling to assert himself in the team, he was recalled six months later, with just a single assist from seven appearances to his name.

Fortunately, his next loan move would prove slightly more beneficial, although the keyword there is slightly.

In February of this year, the Gunners sent the young winger on a year-long loan back to Brazil to join Fluminense, and according to The Athletic, the deal included an option to buy.

During his time with the Brazilian giants, he made 28 appearances, in which he scored twice and provided two assists, but it was revealed this week that Fluminense do not have the funds to activate the £10m option in his contract, meaning it’s another move that has led to nothing.

Ultimately, it’s now crystal clear that the comparisons to Saka in 2022 were way off the mark, and it’s just as clear that Marquinhos does not have a future in this Arsenal team.

Therefore, Arteta and the board must cut their losses, sell the 21-year-old in January, and admit that his signing was a mistake.

Salah scored and assisted against VillaEqualled Messi's recordHis 29th goal of the seasonFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The Egyptian is having an incredible season and his goal and assist in Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa put him in illustrious company, as Salah became the first player since Messi to score and assist in 10 separate matches in one season in one of Europe's top five leagues. This record was set when Messi, Suarez and Neymar were firing on all cylinders as one of the most lethal front threes in football history, a sign of the company Salah's now keeping.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

According to stats gurus OptaJoe, Messi scored and assisted in 11 games that season, a record that you could easily see Salah breaking. So far the Liverpool forward has a whopping 24 goals and 15 assists in 26 Premier League games, plus three goals and four assists in seven Champions League appearances this term. In terms of attacking numbers, he's enjoying one of the most outstanding campaigns of the Premier League era.

DID YOU KNOW?

This isn't the only record Salah broke in the game against Villa; his 29th of the season in all competitions was also his 15th goal away from home, the most a Liverpool player has scored away from home in a single Premier League season. Previously, Luis Suarez had the record with 14 away goals in the 2013/14 season.

Given his consistently outstanding performances this season, it seems remarkable that Salah could be leaving Liverpool in the summer. He's out of contract at the end of 2024/25 but Slot and the rest of the Liverpool hierarchy will surely do everything they can to keep him on the books beyond June. That being said, there's a chance he could sign off with a Premier League title, a Champions League win, and a raft of individual records broken — there's no better way to go than that.

Alongside Antony: Amorim must sell £500k-p/w Man Utd duo signed by Ten Hag

The last couple of days have been a whirlwind for everyone involved with Manchester United, with on and off the field matters catching the eye since last weekend’s defeat to West Ham United.

After yet another Premier League defeat, Erik ten Hag was given his marching orders, departing Old Trafford after two-and-a-half years at the helm, winning two trophies along the way.

However, the Dutchman failed to return the Red Devils to their former glory, failing to mount any serious title charge despite heavy investment which saw over £600m spent during his tenure in Manchester.

His dismissal didn’t stop temporary boss Ruud van Nistelrooy from claiming a 5-2 win over fellow Premier League side Leicester City in the Carabao Cup in midweek, setting up a quarter-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

The former United striker won’t be getting the role on a permanent basis, despite the excellent result, with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim officially set to take over on the 11th of November.

Undoubtedly, it’s an exciting addition given his 71% win percentage during his three years in Portugal, but the 39-year-old may have some brutal calls to make over some of the first-team members.

It could see him ditch a trio of players who have failed to impress since their respective moves to the club under the last head coach.

1 Antony

Antony arrived in Manchester with huge expectations after his huge transfer, which set the hierarchy back a whopping £86m from Eredivisie outfit Ajax.

His circus act of taunting the opposition with ‘skills’ and often spinning in a circle have failed to make him a fan favourite – with his skill set simply not cut out for the English top flight.

Since his big-money transfer to Old Trafford, the 24-year-old has made 87 appearances, scoring just 12 goals, with only one coming this season in the Carabao Cup demolition of Barnsley back in September.

He has cost the club around £7.1m per goal scored during his time in Manchester, often finding himself behind academy stars Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford in the pecking order.

Antony

Antony has undeniably been a huge waste of money, costing the club an absolute fortune for such a small amount of tangible impact on the pitch after his arrival under Ten Hag.

The deal has been made worse by his staggering weekly wage, which sees him take home a reported £200k-per-week regardless of his performance levels – with Amorim needing to immediately offload the winger.

2 Casemiro

The Brazilian central midfielder arrived in a £70m deal from Real Madrid during the summer of 2022 under ten Hag, with huge expectations of being a success after his time with the Spanish giants.

However, his big-money transfer has not gone to plan over the last 14 months or so, often looking below the level required of a side pushing for a consistent Champions League place.

Casemiro has made 96 appearances for the club, scoring 15 times – including a double in the recent Carabao Cup victory, but it might not be enough to secure his future under Amorim.

Unfortunately, the negatives have outweighed the positives, failing to impress for the large part, even looking rash, receiving two red cards, and lacking the discipline to be a success at Old Trafford.

If his transfer fee wasn’t enough, the 32-year-old has earned a small fortune, pocketing £350k-per-week, as per Capology – making him the highest-paid player in the entire first-team squad.

1) Casemiro

£350k-p/w

2) Bruno Fernandes

£300k-p/w

= Marcus Rashford

£300k-p/w

3) Mason Mount

£250k-p/w

4) Antony

£200k-p/w

Amorim will undoubtedly want to make his own impression, whilst handing Manuel Ugarte an opportunity to star under his guidance once again, which is why Casemiro should be ruthlessly ditched – despite his wondergoal against Leicester.

3 Christian Eriksen

Whilst he cost nothing on a free transfer under ten Hag, midfielder Christian Eriksen has provided a solid squad option over the last couple of seasons, often being dependable.

However, unfortunately, given the signing of Ugarte along with the emergence of youngster Kobbie Mainoo, he could find himself further down the pecking order when all the midfield options return to full fitness.

The Danish international was available for transfer during the summer transfer window but failed to secure a move away, with injuries to Mainoo have given him an opportunity to start consistently.

Since his move to the North West, he’s made 83 appearances and has offered an experienced head in times of struggle under the previous reign of the Dutchman.

However, the potential appointment of Amorim could provide a fresh start for a new boss to make his own mark on the playing squad which will undoubtedly result in numerous departures.

Given his age, the 32-year-old could face the chop, especially considering he earns a huge £150k-per-week at Old Trafford – a whopping amount given his squad role at the club, and Amorim could be the man to move him on.

4 The next step for Manchester United

The aforementioned trio leaving in January could see the club save £700k-per-week in wages, a total of £36.4m a season – another huge figure in their cost-cutting attempts.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

It would allow for further investment into the playing squad, handing the squad the injection of quality it desperately needs in certain areas to reach the next level before the end of the campaign.

Injuries have played a huge part in the stuttering start to the new season, which sees the Red Devils currently occupying 14th place in the Premier League after the first nine outings.

Ten Hag’s departure undoubtedly will divide many, especially after the hierarchy gave him the funds to bolster his side during the off-season, just to part ways with him after a poor start to the new campaign.

However, there’s no denying that Amorim’s pending appointment will inject excitement and hope into the fanbase, with his 3-4-3 system allowing for a new brand of football to try and change the current fortunes on the pitch.

The 39-year-old will have the best opportunity of being a success if he can utilise the likes of Rashford and Bruno Fernandes correctly, whilst also parting ways with the three high earners to buy into the club’s new recruitment focus of targeting young talents to set the club up for the present, whilst keeping a closer eye on the future.

0 duels won: Slot must instantly drop 4/10 Liverpool star after Chelsea

The Premier League watched with bated breath. Surely, this was to be the game that would unravel the Arne Slot revolution at Liverpool, who would collapse against the first test of significance?

Chelsea were impressive and their fans should be excited by the promise that has hatched from Enzo Maresca’s tactical implementation, but Slot has trumped the Italian at this stage, shaping Anfield into a force to be reckoned with.

Curtis Jones gave birth to a new level of quality and control as he scored and won both of Liverpool’s awarded penalties, albeit the latter being overturned by VAR.

The 23-year-old’s performance showcases Liverpool’s strength of depth and comments on Slot’s chances of winning silverware this season.

It wasn’t a perfect performance: Chelsea had plenty of success in midfield and succeeded in taking a foothold across portions of the Anfield clash. Dominik Szoboszlai produced an indifferent performance once more and must be sweating over his starting berth going forward.

Dominik Szoboszlai's performance vs Chelsea

Alexis Mac Allister lost his place in the starting line-up for this one, with Slot wary of overexerting his South American coterie, who had only days before returned from their home continent after the October international break.

It meant Jones was handed the opportunity to impress, and he took his chance superbly. Szoboszlai, however, has done little to shake off his detractors after leaving plenty to be desired with the technical facets displayed against the Blues.

Aside from squandering a promising chance in the first half, the 2023 recruit from RB Leipzig also failed to move away from anonymity, with his metrics from the afternoon depicting a bland, colourless canvas.

Not great. It’s pretty damning that Liverpool’s thrusting midfielder failed to win any of his seven contested duels or even win a tackle, while also unable to attempt, let alone complete, a dribble, despite all his running. And moreover, his 49 touches yielded not one key pass.

His movement and presence did help to wrest control from Chelsea in moments, but it wasn’t enough to colour his performance in a positive light.

Luckily, Jones’ wonderful effort allowed Liverpool to grab the three points. Maybe on another day, Liverpool wouldn’t have seen the affair sway in the way it did, and Slot might be tempted to bench Szoboszlai for the next one.

Why Dominik Szoboszlai must be dropped

Szoboszlai’s high-class ability is indisputable, but it’s safe to say that he’s not applying himself correctly in crucial moments, appearing hesitant, and circumspect. Fans can likely draw several instances from 2024/25 alone when the Hungary captain should have thumped the ball against the netting.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

With Jones thriving, perhaps it’s time to relegate Szoboszlai to the bench for a couple of matches, probing him to harness that abundant talent and bring it together to give Liverpool the goals that they need from deep. Mohamed Salah and his forwards are excellent, but there will be a time when another dimension is needed to secure the points.

Against Chelsea, the 23-year-old certainly caught onlookers’ attention, with inews writing of Szoboszlai’s shortcomings in their post-match ratings: ‘Didn’t do well enough with a great chance on 37 minutes and was otherwise anonymous.’

Szoboszlai is a tireless runner but sometimes to a fault. His endless gas tank provides Slot’s engine with the energy it needs to outwork opponents, create space, maintain fluidity within passing passages.

It meant that he was handed a 4/10 match rating, and with Alexis Mac Allister starting from the bench after jetting halfway across the world, you worry about his starting place going forward.

Dominik Szoboszlai warms up for Liverpool

Not least because Jones was so brilliant, so confident, so dynamic. Against Arsenal at the Emirates next weekend, perhaps Slot will value Szoboszlai’s energy and athleticism. But Jones’ movement and silencing of Cole Palmer suggest his form must be preserved. The former Leipzig man needs to be dropped.

What Postecoglou is now planning to transform Dominic Solanke for Tottenham

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is planning action to help transform an esteemed member of his squad, who he believes is in “desperate” need of confidence.

Spurs host Qarabag in Europa League opener

Tonight, the Lilywhites host Azerbaijani champions Qarabag in their opening Europa League group game of the season, and Postecoglou will be very eager to get off to a convincing start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Pundit now urges Tottenham to bring "incredible" loanee back in January

He’s been praised for his form away from north London.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 25, 2024

The match will kick off at 8pm, and you can watch it on TNT Sports 1 and TNT Sports Ultimate, with coverage starting from 7pm. Spurs could make it three wins on the trot in all competitions, having just beaten Coventry City in the EFL Cup and Brentford in the Premier League, which would be a real morale booster for the squad.

Following Qarabag, the north Londoners travel to Old Trafford for a tough game at Man United, before taking on Ferencvaros in their next Europa League group game. Brighton and a London derby clash against West Ham loom after the October international break, so it’s a tough run of games awaiting Spurs, and supporters will be hoping for wins from all of these encounters.

Postecoglou is looking to end the club’s 16-year wait for a major trophy, with their last one being the Carling Cup in 2008. The Europa League is a real opportunity to make this dream a reality, and after Postecoglou promised supporters silverware in his second season at the helm.

“I am really pleased to be back there and excited to be back in it,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s European involvement.

“I spoke about it last year that it was a real gap in our calendar and didn’t help us at certain times of the year not having regular football, that challenge of playing different types of opposition and exposing our whole squad to some meaningful game-time. And the worst thing was sitting around watching other teams play in it. It didn’t sit right with me so being back in a European competition is important.”

A real talking point in the early stages of the season has been new striker Dominic Solanke, who has big shoes to fill as he comes in to take Harry Kane’s previous mantle as Tottenham’s chief goalscorer.

The Englishman scored his first goal with a tap-in against Brentford last weekend, and Ledley King has heaped praise on Solanke for his work rate already.

Postecoglou hatches plan to transform Solanke at Tottenham

However, according to GiveMeSport, Postecoglou desperately wants to give Solanke a confidence boost, and is aiming to transform the £90,000-per-week star into the talisman they require after Daniel Levy shelled out £65 million to sign him from Bournemouth.

The first step of his plan is to start Solanke in their game against Qarabag, despite it being an opportunity to give fringe players a run in the team. Indeed, Postecoglou wants to maintain Solanke’s presence in the starting eleven, and the 27-year-old could have a productive evening against the European minnows this evening.

A goal or two against Qarabag would be an excellent follow-on from his strike at home to Brentford, and Postecoglou appears to believe that Solanke could benefit from a consistent run of prolific form, no matter the opposition.

Arsenal intensifying interest in "impressive" player who has partnered Rice

With a recent injury crisis threatening to expose their squad depth, Arsenal are reportedly intensifying their interest in one midfielder who has already proven himself next to Declan Rice.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners have endured a frustrating start to the season on the injury front, with Martin Odegaard’s recent knock the biggest blow of the lot. The Norway international picked up an ankle injury whilst away on international duty and could now miss up to four weeks. Meanwhile, the Gunners are also missing new signings Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino to add to their recent woes.

Emmanuel Petit says one thing about Arsenal has worried him "for ages"

The Gunners legend is deeply concerned.

It’s the type of injuries that Mikel Arteta hasn’t had to deal with over the last two seasons, creating a new problem for his side as they look to dethrone Premier League champions Manchester City at the third time of asking.

If those in North London fail to cope with the mounting absentees, then questions will undoubtedly begin to come over whether the Gunners strengthened enough in the summer transfer window; the type of questions that recent rumours may have answered.

In pursuit of further depth, those at The Emirates are reportedly leading the race to sign one midfielder. According to Caught Offside, Arsenal are now intensifying their interest in Angel Gomes, who is set to become a free agent upon the expiration of his Lille contract at the end of the season and are ahead of the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle, Napoli, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund in the transfer race.

Angel Gomes

Gomes, of course, is a Manchester United academy graduate who would be completing quite the controversial move by returning to the Premier League courtesy of rivals Arsenal. Nonetheless, it is a move that he would be wise to take and one that would see him partner a familiar face in Rice, given that Gomes recently partnered the Arsenal star on his full England debut against Finland.

The 24-year-old certainly didn’t look out of place next to Rice either to only ignite the rumours even further.

"Impressive" Gomes can partner Rice for Arsenal and England

The arrival of Merino should offer Arsenal a quick solution when finding the right partner for Rice at the heart of their midfield, but at 29 years old, he is arguably not a long-term option. Instead, they could turn towards Gomes on a free next summer. Just 24 years old, the midfielder has worked his way back into the spotlight courtesy of his time at Lille and is now ready for a Premier League return.

It’s a return that would far from surprise analyst Ben Mattinson who dubbed Gomes “always impressive” last December amid early links to a move away from France.

Gomes looked more than comfortable next to Rice for England in what could be a sign of things to come on the international stage, and may well find himself playing the same role at Arsenal next summer.
