    WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

Hansi Flick's side will be next seen in action on Tuesday as they host Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash.

Fewer touches than Vicario: Ange could axe Spurs ace who lost the ball 23x

Tottenham Hotspur fell to an embarrassing defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion this evening, putting a dent in the club’s aspirations of securing a Champions League place this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side led 2-0 at the break after goals from the in-form Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, but it would all evaporate within just 20 minutes of the second half.

The hosts came straight out of the blocks and turned the game on its head after strikes from Yankuba Minteh, Georginio Rutter and Danny Welbeck secured the comeback for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

Spurs’ second half collapse puts an end to their five-game winning streak, giving boss Postecoglou a lot to ponder during the upcoming international break.

Brennan Johnson – a man in-form

Despite the defeat, Welsh winger Johnson continued his excellent form in front of goal scoring for the sixth consecutive outing in all competitions.

It’s quite the turnaround for the £47.5m signing, after being widely criticised on social media for his lack of impact during the opening few matches of the season.

His latest goal against the Seagulls saw him match Harry Kane’s record of most games scored consecutively by a Spurs player in the Premier League, quite the feat given his early season form.

However, his efforts in front of goal would all count for nothing given the second half collapse, with the Lilywhites undoubtedly wanting to forget the outing in a hurry.

Johnson can certainly leave the AMEX with his head held high, but the same can’t be said for one player who was extremely wasteful with the opportunities that fell his way on the South Coast.

The Spurs player who failed to impress against Brighton

Given the recent form of Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski has been forced to operate in a more central position alongside Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur – forming a partnership with the duo in recent weeks.

This evening’s meeting was no different with the Swede starting alongside the pair at the heart of Postecoglou’s midfield – but it was an evening of disappointment from the 24-year-old.

The former Juventus talent only managed 20 passes at a completion rate of 69% and also only won four of the 15 duels that he entered.

Kulusevski also only managed a total of 55 touches during his 90-minute display, a tally that was lower than goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario who registered a total of 63.

The Swede also lost possession 23 times during the defeat, the most of any Spurs player, highlighting his wasteful nature as he failed to create any clear-cut opportunities.

The defeat will sting, especially considering the 2-0 lead Postecoglou’s side boasted at the interval, but the upcoming international break gives the Aussie time to process the defeat and prevent it from happening again in the future.

However, one thing is for certain, Kulusevski needs to be replaced for the meeting against West Ham United in less than two weeks time if his side are to stand any chance of an immediate bounce back after the embarrassing loss on Sunday evening.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The World Cup-winning Frenchman was stung with a four-year suspension after failing a drugs test in September 2023. That sanction was reduced to 18 months on appeal, but the 31-year-old was still released from his contract at Serie A giants Juventus.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pogba will be free to resume his career in March 2025 and has been linked with clubs around the world. Moves to the Saudi Pro League, MLS and Ligue 1 have been speculated on, while an ambitious approach from Russia was tabled when the all-action midfielder was prevented from gracing a professional stage.

    WHAT POGBA SAID

Pogba snubbed that offer and has told French Twitch streamer of his ambition: “There are proposals, then there are interesting things, and not so interesting things… Russia, all that, there have been proposals, but that's not the goal. We have other goals. A club that plays in the Champions League? Why not. If it comes, of course, why not. We always want to be in the best clubs. After that it doesn't depend on me, it depends on lots of other things.”

Pogba has been linked with a move to Marseille, which would see him reunited with former Manchester United team-mate Mason Greenwood. Howe could drop Krafth by unleashing Newcastle’s "incredible" titan

Newcastle United’s previous Premier League match saw them claim all three points against Tottenham Hotspur courtesy of a 2-1 victory.

This win meant they had taken seven points from their opening three league games, a solid start indeed for Eddie Howe and his men.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

They face a tricky tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers today, however, as Gary O’Neil is chasing a first league win of the season.

Will the manager make any changes to his starting XI? There were a couple of players who were fairly underwhelming against Spurs and could be in danger of losing their spot.

The Swede did succeed with 80% of his passes while taking only 35 touches during his time on the spell, which was fewer touches than goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Krafth was also dribbled past on one occasion, won 50% of his duels and lost possession six times. It wasn’t a bad performance, but given the threat Wolves pose with the likes of Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan, might Howe change things at the back?

During the first match of the season, Fabian Schar was sent off against Southampton, receiving a three-game ban in the process.

He is now available, which means the defender should return straight back into the starting XI against the Old Gold, due to his quality at centre-back.

Howe must unleash Fabian Schar against Wolves

The 32-year-old was perhaps unlucky to receive his marching orders against the Saints, but Howe will be glad he is back ahead of the trip to Molineux.

He started all but one of Newcastle’s league games last season, finishing the season with an 83% pass success rate, averaging 71 touches and won 50% of his total duels per game; solid statistics indeed.

The Swiss international also ranked in the top 11% for passes into the final third when compared to his peers in the top flight last term, allowing him to showcase his forward-thinking qualities.

He even ranked in the top 1% for goal-creating actions per 90 (0.35) when compared to his peers and in the top 3% for penalty kicks won per 90, which proves he can contribute at either end of the pitch.

Schar has previously been dubbed “incredible” by Howe for his performances in the past and there is no doubt he is one of the key members of the current first team squad.

Thankfully, the Magpies didn’t lose a single game during his suspension but he should now be brought back in to replace Krafth, due to his fantastic quality on the ball and solid defensive instincts.

Three points is all that matters for the club as they seek to return to European competition next season and, hopefully, Schar will play a part in helping them to claim all three.

Howe must drop Joelinton & unleash "gifted" Newcastle star instead

The Magpies could end the weekend in a top-four spot…

Ornstein: Wolves make offer to sign £120k-p/w ace in "difficult" transfer

Wolves are looking to add reinforcements to their ranks in the final days of the transfer window, and have tabled an offer for a Premier League ace in recent days, it has been revealed.

Wolves on a tight budget

So far, business has not been pretty at Molineux ahead of the new Premier League season, and that was reflected in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the campaign for Gary O'Neil's side.

To date, the Old Gold have added three new faces and also made the loan of Tommy Doyle permanent, reaching a total outlay of £25m.

On the flip side, they have taken close to £100m from the sales of key duo Max Kilman and Pedro Neto to West Ham United and Chelsea respectively. And O'Neil sent a warning to those above him about just that when quizzed on potential additions in the final stages of the transfer window.

“No real update on names linked, it’s a ruthless league and we have an opportunity to be really clever and get some stuff done, the next 2 weeks is big for us…you take £100m last summer, you take £100m this summer, you can’t stand still,” he explained.

But he is set to be disappointed, with the reliable John Percy revealing that the "budget for remainder of the transfer window will be around £20m" despite their big sales, with Wolves "determined to safeguard their financial position".

As a result, the Old Gold will have to get creative with their transfer-making in the coming days, and they appear to have begun doing just that already.

Wolves discuss "difficult deal" for England international

That comes as David Ornstein reports that O'Neil's side are looking to pull off an ambitious move to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer.

The Arsenal no.2 seems set to leave in search of first-team football after starting just two Premier League games after the arrival of David Raya last summer, both of which Raya was ineligible for.

cody-gakpo-aaron-ramsdale-liverpool-opinion

With just two years left on his £120,000-a-week deal at the Emirates Stadium, the Gunners are keen to sell the goalkeeper this summer while his value remains high, and have reportedly placed a £30m price tag on his head.

Of course, that £30m fee is more than Wolves' reported remaining budget, but Ornstein reports that they have made an offer which consists of an "initial loan + buy option", in a move that could see the Midlands side cover the majority of his wages for the season.

Wolves now readying bid to sign £30k-p/w Max Kilman replacement for O'Neil

He could be available for less than £20m this summer.

1 ByBen Browning Aug 19, 2024

Despite the offer, it is added that Wolves are aware that it is a "difficult" deal, but that talks continue as they try to find a breakthrough and potentially upgrade on Jose Sa this summer.

Whether Arsenal will face more enticing interest from clubs around England who are perhaps willing to pay a fee this summer is likely to determine the success of the move for Wolves.

Essex's Fortress under siege as Durham close in on famous Chelmsford victory

Dan Lawrence resists with 76 but Essex lead by just 45 going into day three

Andrew Miller16-Apr-2021After 12 matches and almost three years, the Fortress is on the brink of being conquered. Two half-formed comebacks in consecutive days, this time with their newest golden boy Dan Lawrence to the fore, cannot distract from the sort of frailties that have not been seen in Essex’s cricket for several seasons – ones that have left Durham on the brink of a seismic victory in the champions’ backyard.By the close of the second day, Essex had eked out a lead of 45 with four wickets still to come – and they will be able to look to Durham’s own close-of-play position on day one to know that, on this misleadingly placid deck, there could and should be plenty of resistance still to come. But with Scott Borthwick capping a superb captain’s performance with two late wickets, and the extra pace of Brydon Carse prising out the two vital wickets of Lawrence and Tom Westley, Durham showed the same hunger in the field that their lower-order had displayed with the bat. It’ll take something truly remarkable for this position to now slip from their fingers. The early signs that Durham were not for buckling came as play resumed in the brightest, most summery conditions of the match. After picking up four wickets for as many runs in the previous evening’s gloom to reduce their visitors to 148 for 8, Essex no doubt fancied their prospects of making hay in their second innings as soon as their opportunity came – whatever the deficit, they surely couldn’t make as many errors as they produced on the first morning of the contest. But they were never given a sniff of an early re-insertion, as Stuart Poynter and Matt Salisbury knuckled down for a ninth-wicket stand of 94 that grew in stature as the morning progressed. Essex opened with their likeliest partnership of Sam Cook and Simon Harmer, but they were each defied with ease, with Cook leaking a pair of soft-handed boundaries through third man that confirmed the pitch’s lack of menace now that the clouds had rolled away. And Essex’s frustration grew as steadily as the confidence of the two batsmen, and the size of the lead. Salisbury defied a previous first-class best of 37 by climbing onto the front foot to club Harmer down the ground for four – a shot that was wildly acclaimed on the Durham balcony – before Poynter rocked back to greet Jamie Porter’s first ball with a hard-handed crack through point. And even when Harmer exacted his revenge against Salisbury, inducing a lob to short leg for 42, Chris Rushworth strode out at No. 11 with every bit as much intent to loiter.Lawrence by this stage was on to partner Harmer in a twin-spin attack, but Rushworth responded with a volley of three sublime boundaries – including an inside-out drive through the covers to take the lead past 150. Sam Cook had to be recalled to restore order, inducing a third-ball nick to slip that brought an early lunch, but with a lead of 163 secured, and Poynter unbeaten on 52, the session had delivered riches far beyond anything that Durham could have wished for.The stage was set, therefore, for the champions to show their mettle, but sadly for Nick Browne, he never looked like being the man to deliver. He escaped his pair by the skin of his teeth, with an uncomfortable leading edge through the covers after edging short of slip, but two balls later, he climbed into a dreadful drive to an inducker from Rushworth, and lost his middle stump as he knelt through his stroke in resignation.Related

At the other end, there was Alastair Cook – and whoever dares to write off English cricket’s most decorated nugget? But for the fourth innings in a row, he produced a curious blend of mindsets – with a brace of pinged cover-drives hinting at a fluency that he never quite showed in any other facet of his game. He’d ground along to 12 in the best part of an hour, before flicking uppishly to a leg-stump half-volley from Salisbury, and Jack Burnham at midwicket swallowed the offering with glee. From 19 for 2, Essex needed their two in-form batsmen to show their mettle, and for the next 34 overs they did just that. Westley, a double-centurion in the season opener against Worcestershire, was joined by Lawrence – whose first-innings 32 had been bettered only by the rampant Borthwick on that manic first day. And between them they chipped away at Durham’s lead in a stand of 103 that ought to have given their side the platform for a genuine fightback.Arguably, Essex’s first-innings agenda had been set by Westley’s flighty drive, and he had to overcame a few more anxious moments early on, as Salisbury in particular challenged his outside edge. But Lawrence, at the start of a summer in which most of his fellow Test batsmen are either injured, or at the IPL, or out of form, or all three, slipped effortlessly into the higher gear that showed he’s not about to shy away from the hard yakka now that he’s broken into the England set-up.After getting off the mark with a deflection through third man, he found the extra pace of Carse particularly to his liking as he rifled a pair of cuts through backward square, before showing off his wristy timing with a sublime pick-up off the toes from Ben Raine. And as he crashed Salisbury through the covers to bring up his first half-century of the season, the confidence being projected by Lawrence was palpable. So long as was on hand to set the terms for Durham’s fourth-innings target, there was no reason for Essex to believe that the game was out of reach. But then came the fatal lapses that have undermined Essex’s performances all match long. On 38, Westley lost his shape as Carse induced a gruesome back-foot waft to first slip, and though Lawrence kept cracking on in the same forthright manner, Carse would have his number too four overs later. Another back-of-a-length delivery lured a flat, hard pull through midwicket – but Lawrence connected almost too well with the stroke. It fizzed to Will Young at deep midwicket, who made a crucial chance look simple. Now Essex were truly rudderless, as Paul Walter and Ryan ten Doeschate clawed their way towards a lead with a series of imposing, but rattled boundaries. On 16, ten Doeschate attempted to biff a half-volley from Borthwick back down the ground, but managed only to scuff it in the air for the bowler to cling onto a blinder, diving across the crease. And the captain put his personal seal on the day two overs later, as Adam Wheater was done in by a ripping legbreak outside off, edging through to Poynter for 6.At least Walter was still there at the close, one away from a gutsy half-century, and Harmer’s presence for day three will be a very visceral reminder of what could yet happen if Essex are allowed to build a defendable lead. You can be sure that he’ll defend every run with personal gusto. But the drawbridge has been lowered and hordes from the North are closing in. You can’t imagine many prisoners will be taken in the final reckoning.

Man Utd now open to selling "great" £250,000-p/w flop after internal talks

After a hectic few weeks on the incomings front, Manchester United are reportedly willing to ruthlessly sell one of their transfer flops following internal discussions between Erik ten Hag and the hierarchy at Old Trafford.

Man Utd transfer news

Manchester United's transfer window has finally burst into life in recent weeks with the arrivals of Joshua Zirkzee and, most recently, Leny Yoro. The latter is a particularly impressive signing given the depth of interest in his signature. Eventually choosing Old Trafford, Yoro has set course to become a key man at the heart of the Red Devils' backline for years to come.

Welcoming the 18-year-old, sporting director Dan Ashworth told Manchester United's official website: “Leny is one of the most exciting young defenders in world football; he possesses every attribute needed to develop into a top-class centre-back. Having had such an excellent start to his career, we are excited to support him in reaching his immense potential here at Manchester United."

Having now welcomed two young talents in a positive sign of where their transfer policy is heading, Ashworth and others have reportedly turned their attention towards cleaning up past mistakes.

Man Utd sporting director target Dan Ashworth watches on.

According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Manchester United see Mason Mount as a potential sellable asset just one year on from his arrival after internal discussions between Ten Hag and the club's footballing department. Mount has endured a nightmare spell in Manchester full of injuries and poor form, which could culminate in a summer exit.

More exciting than Yoro: INEOS lining up "monster" Man Utd move

The Red Devils are pulling out all the stops in the transfer market…

ByRobbie Walls Jul 20, 2024

The England international shocked the Premier League by ditching boyhood club Chelsea in favour of Manchester United last summer in a deal worth a reported £55m. One year on, that deal is yet to work out for either party. Earning a reported £250k a week on top of costing that initial transfer fee, Mount's arrival is currently one to forget.

"Great" Mount needs time

Just like Ten Hag was handed in the form of a new contract this summer, Mount arguably needs time to get past his injury struggles and progress at Manchester United. There's good reason why the Red Devils were after his signature last summer, and with time, there's still every chance that he could vindicate their decision to buy him.

The numbers show the standards Mount has performed at in the past. For United, the task is simple: they must help the 24-year-old rediscover those standards to hand Ten Hag an unexpected gamechanger in midfield.

The Dutchman certainly rates Mount, too, saying when the former Chelsea man arrived last season (via 90min): "I don't think [Chelsea] wanted to sell him. They wanted to keep him and they even offered him a new contract many times. But he wanted to make the step and we were, and we are, very pleased he is a Man Utd player because he has great abilities."
