Playing for both sides, and Tait's troubles

Is there anyone who has played in an Ashes series for both Australia and England? asked Asad Rafique from the United States
There’s only one man who has played for England against Australia and for Australia against England. It was a long time ago: so long, in fact, that it isn’t strictly accurate to say that he played on both sides in Ashes series, because the Ashes hadn’t quite been thought of when he first played. Billy Midwinter was born in Gloucestershire in 1851, but by the time of the first-ever Test match, at Melbourne in 1876-77, he was playing Down Under and turned out for Australia in that inaugural game. He then returned to England and started playing for Gloucestershire – and, in 1878, was the subject of a bizarre tug-of-war between WG Grace and the touring Australians, as featured in one of our recent Rewind To … columns. Midwinter played for England in Australia in 1881-82, but by the following season he was back playing for the Aussies. He played 12 Tests in all, eight for Australia and four for England, scoring 269 runs and taking 24 wickets all told. In all there are 14 players who have appeared for two different countries in Tests: the most recent are Kepler Wessels (Australia and South Africa) and John Traicos (South Africa and Zimbabwe). For a full list, click here.Someone told me that Shaun Tait bowled a 33-ball over in England – is that right? asked Charles Kocsis from Australia
Well, Shaun Tait, who has just become Australia’s 392nd Test player, did have a rather gruesome introduction to county cricket when he played for Durham in August 2004, but it wasn’t quite as bad as a 33-ball over – I think the longest was one of ten deliveries. In his first match, for Durham against Somerset at Chester-le-Street, Tait had figures of 12-0-113-0, which included 21 no-balls and two wides. Wisden solemnly reported that he “endured a nightmare English debut … There were early glimpses of his undoubted pace from a slingy action, but his huge delivery stride made him over-step four times in his opening over”. And in his next game – which not entirely surprisingly was his last for Durham – his figures were 6-0-63-0, with five no-balls, against Essex at Colchester. He finished with the chastening overall figures of 18-0-176-0 for the season.I see that Don Bradman once scored 299 not out in a Test – why didn’t he make 300? Also Martin Crowe once made 299, how was he dismissed? asked Pat Khan from Australia
Bradman’s near-miss came in the fourth Test against South Africa at Adelaide in 1931-32. He was approaching his triple-century, but running out of partners: in an attempt to keep the strike he tried a risky second run, and Australia’s No. 11 Hugh “Pud” Thurlow – a fastish bowler from Queensland who was playing in his only Test – was run out by Syd Curnow’s return to the wicketkeeper Jock Cameron. The Don was left stranded on 299 not out. Crowe’s 299 came for New Zealand against Sri Lanka at Wellington in 1990-91, after a huge stand of 467 with Andrew Jones, who made 186. Needing one for his triple-century, Crowe dabbled a catch to the wicketkeeper off the gentle bowling of Arjuna Ranatunga. He later wrote: “I had choked. I didn’t concentrate. I forgot to say `Keep still, watch the ball’. Out for 299 – tell me it’s not true! Tears streamed down my face as I realised that this opportunity might never happen again.” It didn’t: Crowe never did make a Test triple-century, and not has any other New Zealander yet. What is the highest batting average, in Tests and ODIs, that a batsman has managed without scoring a century? asked Ahsen Khalid
Given a minimum of 20 innings, the highest in Tests is 35.29, by Bruce Laird, the Australian opener. He scored 1341 runs in 40 innings, but never exceeded the 92 he made in his first innings, against West Indies at Brisbane in 1979-80. Another Australian, the adhesive 1950s allrounder Ken Mackay, is second with 33.49 (1507 runs), while the South African captain turned innovative administrator Ali Bacher comes next, (679 runs at 32.33) just ahead of the Indian wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel (669 runs at 31.86). In ODIs, also given a minimum of 20 innings, the leader is yet another Australian, Graham Yallop, with 823 runs at 39.19, just ahead of Peter Kirsten of South Africa (1293 runs at 38.03), Graham Thorpe of England (2380 at 37.19), another South African in Jacques Rudolph (36.35), and New Zealand’s Andrew Jones (2784 at 35.69).In Zimbabwe recently Brendon McCullum and Daniel Vettori scored centuries from No. 7 and 8 in the order – how often has this happened in Tests? asked Richard Darrow from New Zealand
The performance of McCullum and Vettori – who lifted New Zealand from an undistinguished 113 for 5 to 452 in the first Test at Harare – was the 10th time two batsmen had managed to score a century in the same Test innings from No. 7 and below. It happened first at Adelaide in 1907-08, when Roger Hartigan hit 116 on his debut for Australia from No. 8 and Clem Hill, coming in much lower than usual at No. 9 because of flu, made 160. Against England at Melbourne in 1920-21 Australia’s “Nip” Pellew scored 116 and Jack Gregory biffed 100 from No. 9, while at Lord’s in 1931 Les Ames (137 from No. 7) and Gubby Allen (122 from No. 9) dug England out of trouble against New Zealand. More than 18 years later West Indies’ 631 at Delhi included hundreds from Everton Weekes (128 from No. 7) and Robert Christiani (107 from No. 8) as well as earlier ones from Clyde Walcott and Gerry Gomez. It happened twice in 1955: at Bridgetown in May West Indies were rescued against Australia by a massive stand between Denis Atkinson (219 from No. 7) and Clairmonte Depeiaza (122 from No. 8), then at Old Trafford an eventual South African win was set up by John Waite (113 from No. 7) and Paul Winslow (108 from No. 8). It wasn’t till 1982-83 that it happened again, when Jeff Dujon made 110 from No. 7 and Clive Lloyd 106 from No. 8 against India in Antigua. And there were two more recent instances before this latest one: in Colombo in 2001-02 Sri Lanka’s Hashan Tillakaratne and Thilan Samaraweera both managed unbeaten hundreds from Nos 7 and 8 against India, while at Christchurch earlier this year Simon Katich made 118 against New Zealand from No. 7 (Jason Gillespie had earlier been used as a nightwatchman) and Adam Gilchrist followed that with a rapid 121, with six sixes.I heard about a Timeless Test that had to end because of a team’s ship leaving, was this the longest match of all? asked Dean Burns from Australia
The most famous so-called Timeless Test was the one at Durban in 1938-39, when England – who had been set 696 to win by South Africa – had reached 654 for 5 when rain brought an end to the tenth day of the match, at which point the touring team had to leave for Cape Town to catch the boat home. It meant that the match, which was supposed to be played to a finish, had to be left drawn. It is the longest Test on record, at ten days, although there was no play possible on the ninth day, and there were also two rest days. Something similar had happened at Kingston in 1929-30 – after the eighth day of another “timeless” Test was washed out, the England team had to catch the boat home, and West Indies, who had been set the little matter of 836 to win, escaped with a draw. It was generally agreed that this type of thing was not good for cricket: even Bill Edrich, who scored 219 in the final innings of that Durban marathon, wrote “What all of us felt was that it was an absurdity for any cricket match to go on through ten playing days and two Sundays. There must be a time limit to cricket matches.” After that, there was: even in Australia, where all Tests had been played to a finish since the late 1880s, a time limit was introduced.

Labuschagne plotting how to tackle the Ashwin puzzle

Marnus Labuschagne is excited by the “game of chess” with R Ashwin during the Test series next month with his mind turning to the challenge since the last meeting between the teams finished. The contest between the pair was one of the fascinating duels during the epic 2020-21 series in Australia which India famously won at the Gabba. Ashwin removed Labuschagne twice in six innings with honours ending about even in the head-to-head before Ashwin missed the deciding Test. This will be Labuschagne’s first Test tour of India – he made his ODI debut there in early 2020 – and he has long been making plans about how he will tackle Ashwin who shapes as a pivotal figure in the four-match series which starts in Nagpur on February 9.Related

“Since then [the last series] I’ve already started thinking,” Labuschagne said. “I’ve changed some of my game because of what I’ve heard about Ashwin and how he bowled to me. I’ve adapted my game to try and foil a few of his ideas and ways he goes about it, so it’s going to be a lovely game of chess and I can’t wait for it.”Labuschagne’s subcontinental Test experience comes from the five matches he played against Pakistan and Sri Lanka last where he had mixed success. The high point was a century in the second Test in Galle, but his dismissal for 104 came at a vital time when Australia let a strong position slip.Labuschagne is currently on BBL duty with Brisbane Heat following the conclusion of the Test series against South Africa. Australia are due to have a brief training camp in Sydney towards the end of January and will arrive in India just seven days before the opening Test.”People think, right now it’s Big Bash then you start thinking, but the thinking happens way ahead,” he said. “You start processing everything in your mind, you go through every scenario of what bowler you are going to come across. I’ve already thought about my plans so now it’s just about executing…piece the puzzle together and make sure the puzzle is ready when it’s game time. That’s the key, and that’s how all preparation happens.”Labuschagne will be part of a stable Australia batting order but Steven Smith will likely be key to their hopes in the series, bringing an average of 60.00 in India. The bond between Smith and Labuschagne is well known and is further illustrated in season two of which is released on Friday.”We’re always talking about that game and what’s to come and how we’re going to go about it,” Labuschagne said. “Think the important part is that once we get there, we’ve already gone through all the scenarios and that’s where his experience and a lot of the other guy’s experience will become very helpful.”The series in India begins Australia’s quest for three major Test prizes overseas with a likely World Test Championship final in June – probably against India again – ahead of the Ashes.”Can’t wait, so excited for the next 10 Test matches,” Labuschagne said. “We’ve played really well, people know we are very good at home, very tough to beat…but the challenge we have going two away series in a row, that’s going to be awesome. I can’t wait for the challenge against spin in India and can’t wait for the challenge of Bazball verses Ronball.”

Revealed: How broken Harry Kane backup promise and Nicolas Jackson arrival forced Bayern Munich wonderkid to make last-minute Premier League transfer

Bayern Munich's transfer policy is facing fresh criticism after a broken promise forced Johan Kusi-Asare into a last-minute Premier League move.

Bayern loaned Johan Kusi-Asare to FulhamHad earlier promised him backup striker roleBayern's reversal has been criticisedFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After a chaotic end to the summer transfer window, Bayern loaned their 18-year-old prospect Kusi-Asare to Fulham in a last-minute move. The deal with an option to buy, comes after Bayern reportedly assured Kusi-Asare in mid-August that he would remain with the first team to serve as a backup to Harry Kane. However, the club abruptly changed course just days before the deadline, informing the Swedish teenager that he was free to look for a new club after all, according to .

Bayern's initial plan was to integrate Kusi-Assare into the senior squad and this was further confirmed by sporting director Christoph Freund. This promise led the player to reject other concrete offers, including one from PSV, a club that could have provided a less pressured environment for his development.

However, as the transfer window progressed, a new twist emerged. Reports surfaced that Bayern were considering signing another striker to provide more proven depth behind Kane. This led to a significant shift in strategy, and when the club secured Nicolas Jackson on a loan-to-buy deal, Kusi-Asare was suddenly surplus to requirements. The timing of this U-turn was crucial, as it left the player with limited options late in the window.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Swedish striker was signed by Bayern in 2024 from AIK for €4.5 million. The 18-year-old played started for Bayern's reserve team mostly last year in which he scored five goals and registered two assists in 23 games across all competitions. However, despite extending Kusi-Asare's contract and securing a buy-back option, the club have put the 18-year-old in a difficult position, who might struggle in a physically competitive English league.

The player's immediate future will be about proving he can compete at the highest level in a challenging league. He will compete for minutes with experienced strikers like Rodrigo Muniz and Raul Jimenez. The German club are counting on their buy-back option to pay off in the long run, but their handling of the promise made to Kusi-Asare has put both the player and the club’s reputation under scrutiny.

Ex-Real Madrid star rules out La Liga return after rejecting Champions League offers and confirms he won't pursue coaching career because he's 'had enough' of football

This further signals that the forward is fully focused on his life in Qatar. However, he seeks a reunion with Madrid prior to his retirement.

WHAT JOSELU SAID

When asked about making a return to La Liga with Madrid in an interview with , Joselu laughed and said: "Phew, it puts me in a difficult position. In principle, I rule out returning to Spain. And also, being a coach. I'll have had enough football when I retire. I had a career that many would envy. I've enjoyed it immensely, and I was able to finish on a high note at the European level. This summer I had offers from Spanish and European Champions League clubs, and further down the league, to play there again, but no: my family and I are fine in Qatar. Leaving Madrid was the hardest moment of my entire career, because I was leaving behind a childhood dream."

CHUVA CAI, ACORDA TRICOLOR E GOLS ENFIM SAEM

The Euro 2025 hosts are due to play another friendly against Czechia on Thursday and then open their campaign against Norway on July 2.

Fabrizio Romano: Berta will make "important" Arsenal proposal for £125m star

Arsenal, led by new sporting director Andrea Berta, are set to move for an “underrated” marquee player this summer, according to reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Andrea Berta's rumoured transfer plans for Arsenal

Berta signed as Arsenal’s director three weeks ago, and since the Italian’s appointment to replace Edu Gaspar, Mikel Arteta’s side have been tipped for an exciting summer transfer window.

Arsenal hold early talks to sign £50m striker likened to Neymar and Mbappe

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 28, 2025

Berta could apparently have a £300 million transfer warchest to spend on up to seven new signings at the Emirates Stadium, according to GiveMeSport, with Arsenal potentially planning to bring in a new backup ‘keeper, a full-back, two central midfielders, a left-winger, an alternative to Bukayo Saka and a striker.

A fresh centre-forward will be particularly crucial, as Arsenal have long yearned for a prolific vocal point up front as the last missing piece of Arteta’s jigsaw. Long-term injuries to Gabriel Jesus, who could even be out until 2026, and Kai Havertz have also further highlighted the need for a number nine.

According to some media sources, Berta is even gaining a head start on the summer window, with Arsenal opening preliminary talks over Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitiké, but the Frenchman isn’t their only attacking target.

Arteta’s “dream” striker target, as per various reports, is Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

The Swede has been in sensational form under Eddie Howe yet again this season with 23 goals from 33 appearances in all competitions, but Newcastle are not planning to let him go easily despite the rumoured interest from elite sides.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsak

£125 million is actually one of the cheaper figures to have been mooted by some sections of the press, but even that would require Arsenal to smash their transfer record.

Arsenal will make "important proposal" to sign Alexander Isak

As per Romano, his marquee valuation hasn’t deterred Berta.

Indeed, the respected reporter claims that Arsenal will make an “important proposal” to sign Isak this summer, with Romano sharing an update on his situation for GiveMeSport’s Market Madness podcast.

“We have to see what happens when Arsenal and Liverpool, because I expect these two clubs to arrive with important proposals in the summer,” Romano said.

“And at that stage, we have to see what the player decides to do and also what kind of conversation he will have with Newcastle. But on club side, they keep saying that they will try till the end to extend this contract, to keep the player and to make the face of their project also for the future. So I think it’s going to be a big fight in the summer for this fantastic striker.”

Both Isak and Anthony Gordon have been labelled the Premier League’s “most exciting” and perhaps “most underrated” forward duo by ex-Nigeria international Sunday Oliseh, but it is clear that Arsenal are fully aware of the former’s star quality after repeated links.

The 25-year-old is set to be one of the biggest stories of this summer transfer window, and there is no doubt he’d be a truly transformative signing for Arteta’s side.

Sky Sports claims that Tottenham have stepped up their interest in Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo, but United also remain admirers of the 25-year-old. The Bees winger is still the Red Devils 'priority' target, and Spurs want him as well, but they are keeping their options open in case that pursuit fails.

United are in the process of rebuilding their attack ahead of next season after signing Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5 million, and if they were able to add Mbeumo or Semenyo, that would be a big boost. But after failing to secure European football next season, following their Europa League final loss to Tottenham, they are at risk of losing their top targets to rival sides.

DID YOU KNOW?

Semenyo, who played as a left winger, a right winger, and as a centre-forward this season, scored 13 goals and added seven assists in 40 appearances for Bournemouth in 2024/25. Mbeumo, on the other hand, scored 20 goals in the Premier League this term.

United may return for an improved offer for Mbeumo after their first bid of £55 million ($74.6m) was rejected earlier this month. Semenyo, on the other hand, could cost more than that as a big summer transfer window lies ahead.

Worcestershire 83 (Wright 5-32, Davey 3-26) and 26 for 2 (Haynes 17*, Davey 2-19) need 245 runs to beat Leicestershire 173 and 180 (Hill 49, Leach 5-41, Waite 4-21)Leicestershire picked up two early wickets after setting Worcestershire a challenging 271 target on a still-bowler friendly pitch on day two of the LV=Insurance County Championship match at New Road.Loan signing Josh Davey from Somerset made the double breakthrough in dismissing openers Azhar Ali – for a pair – and Ed Pollock in his first over.Gareth Roderick and Jack Haynes managed to survive to the close at 26 for 2 but the untrustworthy nature of the pitch means the Foxes will be favourites tomorrow to complete a second win of the campaign.Leicestershire had earlier been bowled out for 180 after Joe Leach’s impressive five-wicket return and Matthew Waite’s Championship-best figures of 4 for 21.It was the 16th five-for of Leach’s distinguished career and Waite eclipsed his previous best of 4 for 35 in the corresponding fixture last season.Captain Lewis Hill’s patient 49 was largely responsible for the visitors being able to set a daunting target on a wicket of uneven bounce. After the dramas of day one, when 22 wickets fell, the game proceeded at a more sedate pace for the first half of the day as Leicestershire looked to capitalise on their first-innings lead of 90.There were two nightwatchers occupying the crease when play resumed – but both soon fell to Leach.Davey could only help a delivery which bounced on him to Pollock at first slip and Will Davis went lbw working to leg. There was more joy for Leach when Colin Ackerman fenced at a delivery outside the off stump and Pollock did the rest.Leach’s morning spell brought the excellent figures of 7-4-15-3 but then Hill and Peter Handscomb entrenched themselves during a partnership of 71 in 30 overs. The pair batted sensibly and took few risks in ensuring Leicestershire built a substantial lead on a pitch where the occasional ball still misbehaved.Handscomb, on 11, had to survive a delivery from Adam Finch which spat up off a length and flew onto the off side and then a confident appeal for lbw from Waite to the last ball before lunch.Play progressed at a serene pace but then Waite instigated a collapse which saw five wickets tumble for 20 runs. His first over back into the attack brought about the downfall of Hill, one short of a deserved half-century, when he inside edged onto his stumps.Waite then struck three times in an over and ended the resistance of Handscomb who battled away for 26 off 98 balls but then aimed a blow on the leg side and was caught off a leading edge by Brett D’Oliveira running back to deep mid off.Wiaan Mulder attempted to force Waite off the back foot and was taken at second slip by Haynes who then pulled off a fine low one-handed effort to the next delivery to dismiss Tom Scriven.Leach wrapped up the innings when Rehan Ahmed went for a big blow and was stumped.Worcestershire needed a solid start if they were to harbour realistic ambitions of chasing down their target but Azhar and Pollock quickly perished to undistinguished shots against Davey.Azhar completed a pair when he took a stride forward, tried to work the ball through midwicket and instead edged low to first slip. Pollock also aimed a blow on the leg side but instead the ball lobbed a gentle catch to cover at 2 for 2.Roderick and Haynes got their heads down but there were signs of the heavy roller wearing off and batting becoming more difficult before the premature close due to bad light and rain with 14 overs remaining.
