Forget about Trossard: Arsenal need to unleash their £60m "monster" instead

After a few months of waiting, Arsenal are finally back in Premier League action, with a home tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers serving as the club’s opening game of the season.

Mikel Arteta’s side will be looking to go one better than they did last year and the campaign prior by finally ending their two-decade title drought.

However, Edu Gaspar and Co have made that task harder than it should be by remaining relatively inactive in the transfer market, with Riccardo Calafiori the only addition to the first team thus far.

That said, there have been plenty of links to some incredibly exciting attackers over the last few months, suggesting that some frontline reinforcements could still be brought in before that window slams shut.

However, a certain player will be hoping to put in an impressive enough performance this afternoon to dissuade Arteta from signing a new winger.

Arsenal's summer business

As mentioned above, while David Raya’s move has been made permanent and youngsters Tommy Setford and Lucas Nygaard have joined the club, the only new face added to the first team this summer has been Calafiori, who completed his £42m move from Bologna late last month.

However, while little has happened, there have been a plethora of links to some genuinely exciting attackers, and while strikers such as Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres have been atop the wishlist of most fans, the club have been linked with a wider array of wingers than traditional centre-forwards.

For example, one of the first sagas of the summer focussed on Nico Williams and his potential move to either Barcelona or Arsenal, only for the European Champion to supposedly opt to remain with Athletic Bilbao for another season.

After him, there were rumours about a potential move for Portuguese star Pedro Neto, who can play on either flank, but that potential deal was put to bed when it was announced that he had joined cross-city rivals Chelsea last week.

Some potential transfers that could still happen include Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané, with the latter having already worked with Arteta at City and the former another star who could play on either side of a front three.

Amazingly, those are only some of the wide players who have been linked with a move to the Emirates in recent months, and while many of the names mentioned are accustomed to playing on the right or left, it’s clear that whoever eventually signs for the club will get far more game time on the latter, as Bukayo Saka is undoubtedly the first name on the teamsheet at the moment.

Therefore, one of the current Arsenal players most at risk of losing his place to a new signing is Gabriel Martinelli, unless he can put in a performance later today that dissuades Arteta and Co from signing someone who could be his replacement.

Why Martinelli has to start

So, now we’ve established that Martinelli has to up his game in the next couple of weeks to avoid seeing himself potentially replaced with a new signing, let’s look at why he should start against Wolves this afternoon.

Now, there may be plenty of Arsenal fans out there who would rather Leandro Trossard start off the left today, and based on last season alone, it would be hard to disagree with that opinion, as the Belgian racked up 17 goals and two assists in 46 appearances.

However, while the Brazilian’s haul of eight goals and five assists in 44 appearances was somewhat underwhelming, he has the ability and potential to be a superstar winger for the club, and at just 23 years old, he has far more of a future in the lineup than the former Brighton & Hove Albion ace who’s set to turn 30 before the end of the year.

Furthermore, while the £60m-rated wideman wasn’t at his best last season, we have already seen just how good he can be when he is.

For example, in 2022/23, the Guarulhos-born “monster”, as journalist Mark Mann-Bryans described him, scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 46 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.19 games.

It’s not just his potential to produce goals and assists that warrant his place in the starting lineup, though; it’s also his style of play, for as talented as his fellow attackers are in this Arsenal squad, they don’t all share his desire to just run at defenders and take them on.

A full-throttle Martinelli offers a totally different kind of threat to someone like Trossard, who might slow things down a bit more to find a better pass or shooting opportunity, and while both are perfectly valid approaches, the former Ituano gem is more likely to get fans off their feet.

Ultimately, the number of wingers linked to Arsenal over the last couple of months should signal to Martinelli that his place in the squad is far from assured and that he simply cannot have a season like he did last year again.

However, for the best players, that threat can also work as motivation, and as we know how good he can be at his best, Arteta should start him this afternoon and let the 23-year-old show him why he doesn’t need to splash the cash on another left-winger.

'People don't like that' – Wrexham director explains why club's popularity has taken a hit despite promotion success under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

Wrexham have rocketed to worldwide fame since Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's takeover of the club. The success of Disney+ documentary series Welcome To Wrexham has helped the Red Dragons attract fans from around the world.

Their rise from the fifth-tier of English football to League One with incredible back-to-back promotions has backfired on the Welsh team, Harvey says, as the director feels football fans in England no longer have an affinity for them.

WHAT SHAUN HARVEY SAID

"Wrexham was the underdog in the UK when we started, but not necessarily because we were the poorest club," Harvey said at a supporters' event in New York. "We weren’t since Rob and Ryan came in, but the town of Wrexham was the underdog. It had been downtrodden for 15 years in terms of its football and industries had left the town. It was in despair and people wanted to get out and not get in. “We got to this position where we could be everybody's favourite second team, because nobody saw Wrexham as a challenge.

"It was acceptable all of a sudden to be a Wrexham fan, as well as being a Manchester United fan, or a Liverpool fan, or any other club that you wanted to support. That positioning actually made us universally popular. Now, how popular we are is waning in certain places in the UK. We've gone from being this plucky little underdog, to all of a sudden we're a threat, and people don't like that as much."

Imagine him & Yoro: Man Utd could land £46k-p/w De Ligt upgrade

INEOS aren't wasting any time in putting their stamp all over the current Manchester United squad, having swiftly wrapped up deals for Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro from Bologna and Lille, respectively.

The addition of the teenage Frenchman, in particular, has set tongues wagging among the Old Trafford faithful, with Erik ten Hag and co ready to build a new backline following the departure of World Cup winner, Raphael Varane.

With long-serving Swede, Victor Lindelof, also tipped to depart – and with Harry Maguire left with just a year to run on his existing deal – further recruits are expected before the window is out, with Yoro unlikely to be the only defensive addition this summer.

Man Utd's search for a centre-back

As Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst has noted, the Red Devils could potentially bring in three central defenders before the August deadline, with parallel moves having also been made for Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt – alongside the pursuit of Yoro.

That said, United are currently being priced out of a move for Branthwaite amid Everton's £75m plus demands, while reports have also indicated that the Premier League giants are unwilling to match Bayern Munich's £42m asking price for De Ligt.

Amid those stalled moves, speculation in recent days has centred around Bayer Leverkusen titan, Jonathan Tah, with Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg having revealed earlier this week that the 28-year-old has been the subject of an enquiry from the Manchester side.

How Jonathan Tah compares to De Ligt

With the new season looming, the expectation will be for young Yoro to partner Lisandro Martinez from the off, albeit with there likely to be concerns over the Argentine's ability to remain fit for a consistent period, having endured an injury-ravaged 2023/24 campaign.

Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez.

As such, it may be a case of Yoro partnering someone else next term, hence bringing in an experienced figure like Tah or De Ligt to fill the void of the departing Varane – the Frenchman having notably started in the FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City.

While De Ligt – who worked under Ten Hag at Ajax previously – would have his merits, the addition of Tah could represent something of an upgrade, with the German giant coming off the back of a hugely successful season in which Leverkusen went unbeaten domestically.

As shown in the table above, the major benefit of turning to Tah for United would be his superior quality in possession, with the £46k-per-week ace coming out on top for pass accuracy and key passes per game in the Bundesliga last season, while also dominating far more impressively in an aerial sense.

Equally, a further green tick for the Leverkusen sensation is his apparent likeness to a certain William Saliba, as per FBref, with the pair – who stand at 6 foot 5 and 6 foot 4, respectively – deemed to share a number of stylistic and statistical similarities.

The major point of comparison between the pair stems from their innate ball-playing ability, with Tah ranking in the top 1% among his European peers for pass completion and the top 13% for passes attempted per 90, while Saliba, too, is also something of a defensive playmaker as he ranks in the top 9% and the top 12% for those same two metrics, respectively.

Such similarities bode well for the impact that the Hamburg native can make in English football, with Saliba having formed part of the division's best defence last season, while earning comparisons to a "young Rio Ferdinand" from United legend, Gary Neville.

Tah would have to go some way to try and emulate the Frenchman's success in the Premier League, although that likeness indicates not only what a worthy alternative to De Ligt he would be, but also a worthy partner for the youthful Yoro next season.

He wants to join: Man Utd pursuing £100k-p/w star who’d unlock Mainoo

Manchester United will be hoping their 2024/25 season can be more successful overall than their campaign in 2023/24. It was a very frustrating time overall for the Red Devils, despite ending the season with silverware, and they will be hoping to have a stronger season in 2024/25.

Erik ten Hag

The 20-time English champions came eighth last season under Erik ten Hag, which nearly cost the Dutchman his job. However, the FA Cup final victory against Manchester City was enough to convince Sir Jim Ratcliffe to keep him in the post, and Ten Hag is seemingly set to sign a new contract in the next few days.

Like every club, United recently found out their fixtures for next season’s iteration of the Premier League. They began August hosting Fulham at Old Trafford to open the season, before travelling down to the AMEX Stadium to face Brighton. Finally, United will close out the month with a crunch clash against Liverpool at home.

There is no doubt the Red Devils will need to improve their squad this summer to improve their standings. In fact, they have already been linked with one player who could come into the club and help to sure up the centre of the park.

Man Utd target Ligue 1 midfielder

The player in question here is Paris Saint Germain and Urguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte. The 23-year-old has only been at the Paris club for one season but is already linked with a move away, and United are one potential destination for him.

According to a report from highly reputable journalist Fabrizio Romano, United and PSG have “been in touch” in recent days, in order to discuss a potential move for the player. Romano explains that Ugarte would “be open to joining United”, despite the fact they don’t have Champions League football next season.

Manuel Ugarte for PSG

As per the report from the Italian journalist, United are not thought to be the only side who want to sign Ugarte this summer, although Romano does not name any other clubs. Regardless, he does confirm that the Uruguayan is “expected to leave” the Parisian club this summer.

Romano believes no formal bid has been made yet by United. However, journalist Ben Jacobs claims the Red Devils sent an offer of £25m for Ugarte to PSG. Whatever the case, it is somewhat short of his market value according to Football Transfers, who claim the Uruguay international is worth £35m.

Why Ugarte would be a good signing

23-year-old Ugarte did not manage to nail down a permanent starting place for PSG last season. The Uruguayan featured just 37 times for Luis Enrique in all competitions, with 25 of those appearances coming in Ligue 1. He did not manage to get on the scoresheet from defensive midfield but did register three assists.

In terms of his profile, Ugarte is an aggressive number six who is an impressive ball-winner in the heart of his side’s midfield. In fact, football analyst Ben Mattinson described him as a “defensive destroyer” back in 2023, which is certainly reflected in his stats on FBref.

The £100k-per-week star is statistically one of the best tacklers in European football. He attempts an average of 4.11 tackles per 90 minutes and wins 2.32 of them. That places him in the top 1% and 2% of midfielders respectively. The Uruguayan also makes an average of 1.86 interceptions per 90, placing him in the top 4%.

He is also superb when making recovery runs and looking to win the ball back. Ugarte averages 8.14 ball recoveries, which also ranks him in the top 1%.

The midfielder could be the dream partner for Kobbie Mainoo. United’s young star in midfield is one of the most exciting midfielders in the Premier League, but at times has been shackled with extra defensive responsibilities. With Ugarte in the side, it could help unlock Mainoo and allow him to get further forward.

The 19-year-old got himself on the scoresheet five times last season, as well as registering one assist in the Premier League. He is a wonderful ball carrier, averaging 2.70 take-ons per 90, which ranks him in the top 9% of midfielders, and completing 1.46, ranking him in the top 8% according to FBref.

Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo.

With that in mind, Ugarte could be the dream signing for United in midfield. He could help get the best out of Mainoo in advanced areas of the pitch, whilst bringing excellent defensive nous to United’s midfield. For a potential fee of around £35.4m, signing Ugarte could be too good of an opportunity for United to pass up.

Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman to head directly to IPL from CPL

All six Afghanistan players will stay back till the end of the CPL despite clash with Shpageeza league

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Sep-2020Six Afghanistan players, who are part of CPL 2020, have been allowed to continue playing in the Caribbean by the ACB (Afghanistan Cricket Board) despite a clash with the Shpageeza T20 league at home. Rashid Khan, the No.1 T20I bowler, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who is just behind him on the T20I charts, are among the six Afghanistan players featuring in the ongoing CPL.The Shpageeza league is set to begin this Sunday in Kabul while the CPL runs till next Thursday. While Rashid’s side Barbados Tridents have crashed out of the tournament, Mujeeb’s Jamaica Tallawahs have made the final four. Mohammad Nabi (St Lucia Zouks), Zahir Khan (Zouks), Najibullah Zadran (Zouks) and Naveen-ul-Haq (Guyana Amazon Warriors) will also be in action along with Mujeeb in the playoffs.Originally the ACB was meant to fly the six players to Kabul on a charter plane. However with most countries in the Caribbean closing their borders, including Trinidad & Tobago, the ACB faced logistical challenges in arranging the charter. It is understood that out of the six Afghanistan players Rashid, Nabi and Mujeeb will head directly to the UAE to participate in the IPL. With the IPL imposing a mandatory six-day quarantine, the ACB conceded that the three players would not have enough time to join their franchises if they were to participate in the Shapageeza League. As for the three other Afghanistan players, they will travel to Kabul on September 12 and participate in the Shpageeza League.Nazeem Jaar Abdulrahimzai, the acting chief executive officer of the ACB, had earlier said the plan was to fly the Afghanistan players in the CPL to Kabul by September 5, a day before the start of the Shpageeza league. The ACB, though, has changed its plan now.”We understand the importance of the Shpageeza Cricket League to the ACB and the reasons why it had to be scheduled during the CPL after the NOCs were all issued,” Pete Russell, CPL’s COO said in a media release. “We truly appreciate the Chairman of the ACB allowing these six Afghan players to stay at the Hero CPL until its conclusion. Afghan players have had a huge impact on our competition, both this season and in previous years, and we are very grateful to have them with us until the final on 10 September.”

Talks open: Everton make move over new Goodison Park deal for £30k-p/w ace

Following their 15th placed finish in the Premier League last season, Everton now look set to offer a new deal to a player who has been vital to Sean Dyche's side.

Toffees look to build upon strong finish to the season

Whilst the ownership question will be the most prominent going into the summer, it is clear that Everton are still looking to get new signings through the door during the transfer window.

Reinforcements in attack are high on the list of priorities at Goodison Park with recent rumours suggesting that a move for Sheffield United's Daniel Jebbison could be on the cards. The Canadian striker has interest from across the Premier League and Championship meaning that the Toffees will have to move quickly to get a deal done.

Everton are also looking to replace stars that look set to depart Goodison this summer. Jarrad Branthwaite is one name perhaps destined to be playing his football elsewhere next season with Manchester United currently leading the race for the defender's signature. In order to fill the void left by the 21-year-old, the Toffees are reportedly interested in a move for Burnley's Maxime Esteve following the Clarets’ relegation back to the Championship.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Part of Everton's plan this summer will be to also keep some of their key players at the club. One name currently locked in talks over a new deal is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the striker's current deal expiring next summer. With the Toffees clearly eager to keep hold of their key assets, new reports suggest another important player is set to be offered a new contract this summer.

Everton open talks to keep Garner at Goodison

As first reported by Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, Everton are opening talks over a new deal for James Garner. The 23-year-old's current deal at Goodison Park expires in 2026, but the Toffees' higher ups are eager to prolong the midfielder's stay on Merseyside.

Garner joined Everton in a £15million move from Manchester United back in September 2022 and the midfielder has gone on to establish himself as a key player in Dyche's side. The 23-year-old featured in all but one of Everton's league games as the Toffees finished a respectable fifteenth place.

It has been reported that the Everton chiefs are big fans of Garner with Dyche himself singing the midfielder's praises back in November telling the press: “Jimmy Garner was terrific, he’s learning and improving. He’s just a good kid. He’s got that nice little edge about him that he’s a bit of a nark now and again, I like it.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

“I think you need that as a footballer. The demands he places upon himself is very pleasing as he works very hard in training and I think he’s getting the rewards with his improvement."

Currently commanding a wage of £30,000 per week per Capology, there is no doubt that Garner's performances on Merseyside have merited a new deal this summer.

West Indies batting form a 'worry', admits Estwick

Assistant coach confident Jason Holder will be ready for Test series

Roddy Estwick, West Indies assistant coach, has admitted he is slightly troubled by the top-order’s form ahead of the Test series against England but insists there is no concern over captain Jason Holder’s form. While many have made scores of substance in the two intra-squad matches at Emirates Old Trafford in the last couple of weeks, there was some alarm when their frontline batsmen capitulated to the first-choice bowlers on Wednesday.A top-five of Kraigg Brathwaite, John Campbell, Shamarh Brooks, Shai Hope and Roston Chase subsided to 9 for 3 and 49 for 5 in their final competitive innings before next week’s first Test at the Ageas Bowl.ALSO READ: Holder’s lean run continues as Simmons rejoins squad”I would have loved to see the batsmen spend a little bit more time in the middle,” Estwick told the PA news agency. “That would be one of the biggest worries, that none of the batsman in the Test squad got a score in this innings.”In the first game players got scores so it’s not a major concern but I would love to see a couple getting scores in this match. They’ve still got a little bit more time.”In England you’ve got to get used to leaving the ball, especially early on. The ball’s obviously going to nip around so you’ve got to be able to know where your off stump is, know what to leave and what to play at. We’re obviously going down to a different surface at Southampton, we’ve got to assess that surface as quickly as possible and hit the ground running.”Holder’s woes with the bat continued on Thursday after his move to open the innings backfired when he was dismissed for 2 off 15 balls, leaving one from Anderson Phillip that nipped back in and clipped his off bail. That means he has scored just seven runs and faced fewer than 30 deliveries in three innings while he has bowled only five overs across the internal matches after an ankle niggle. Estwick, though, believes Holder, No. 1 in the ICC Test allrounder rankings, will not be undercooked at Southampton.”Anybody that knows Jason Holder well wouldn’t be worried. He is a strong and tough competitor and he’s mentally very, very strong as well. Jason knows how to prepare for Test match cricket, he’s been the number one allrounder for a number of years so he’ll be ready come July 8, no worries at all.”Joshua Da Silva was the star performer with the bat for the Holder XI in the drawn four-day contest against a side led by Brathwaite, the 22-year-old following up his unbeaten first-innings century with 56 not out in the second dig as he amassed 189 runs without dismissal. It will not be enough to be catapulted into the Test squad from the reserves but Estwick has been impressed by the youngster. “He played very well in the game and I’m sure that his time will come,” Estwick said.Estwick had been leading the side this week as head coach Phil Simmons was self-isolating in his hotel room after recently attending his father-in-law’s funeral. Simmons was back presiding over the warm-ups on Thursday morning after testing negative for coronavirus for a third time, allowing him to link up with the rest of the touring party.Estwick added: “We’ve missed him, obviously. But he’s back now with us and everything is good to go. It wasn’t a disruption because it happened in the game. You tend to miss more hands on deck in practice but if there’s a game going on, you’ve only got to monitor preparation and the odd person going into the nets.”But as our leader, we’re happy to have him back and it’s very important that he’s back for us because now we can sit down, plan and prepare. We’ve been here now for three weeks so it’s all about good, solid planning and letting the players execute properly.”
