Amorim now backs Man Utd’s pursuit of £84m gem who could replace Rashford

Manchester United and Ruben Amorim are interested in signing an £84 million youngster from the new manager’s former club, according to a new report.

The Red Devils have two games remaining under interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy before Amorim arrives as manager next week. The first priority for the Portuguese will be to get to grips with his new squad and get some positive results on the board, but transfer plans are being made.

Man Utd news and updates

Van Nistelrooy will obviously not become the new United manager, but the Dutchman has made it clear that he would like to continue in his assistant role. This will be a decision that is probably made between him and Amorim as they meet each other next week, but the United players are keen for van Nistelrooy to remain at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Amorim’s arrival at United could be Marcus Rashford’s last chance of rescuing his career at the club. That is because United are considering the sale of Rashford as they remain concerned about his performances. The Englishman has struggled for form last season and this season, and now Amorim will be tasked with a “last-gasp assessment” of the winger.

The Red Devils could already have his replacement in mind as they are keeping tabs on Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior as he continues talks over a new contract at the Spanish giants. But Amorim and United also have their eye on another player who could replace Rashford, and it is someone the Portuguese knows well.

Amorim behind Man Utd's pursuit of Geovany Quenda

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are interested in signing Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda and Amorim is keen to bring him to Manchester. The 17-year-old joined Sporting’s academy in 2015 but didn’t make his first team debut until this season.

Quenda can operate mainly on the right-hand side, but he also has the ability to play central as well as on the left. That could make him the perfect long-term replacement for Rashford, whose future at Old Trafford looks in doubt.

The 17-year-old is considered one of Sporting’s hottest prospects, and his performances this season have caught the attention of United, as well as Manchester City and Liverpool. The Red Devils even had scouts in place to watch Quenda in Sporting’s recent game against Famalicao, where he scored, and they were also present against Sturm Graz in the Champions League, but he only played six minutes.

United will not be able to buy Quenda until April at the earliest, as he is only 17 and will have to wait until he turns 18 before he can move. Therefore, a transfer would have to wait until the summer.

The winger has a €100 million release clause in his contract, which is roughly £84 million, and this is said to be considered too high, but Sporting are very reluctant to allow Quenda to leave, and with them not willing to accept anything less, it puts United out of a move right now.

The next Suarez: Liverpool have found a new £100m + star in the making

Liverpool have always been regarded as a behemoth of the English game, but Anfield and its many supporters languished as a fallen giant for many interminable years and that’s a fact.

Jurgen Klopp stretched his influence onto Merseyside in 2015 and painted the football-frenzied city in brilliant red once again, but it wouldn’t be fair to say that Liverpool were bereft of joy and excitement in the overtures of the German’s appointment.

The 2014/15 campaign was drab and, perhaps more aptly, disastrous. It was Brendan Rodgers’ last full campaign and a return to disappointment for the club, but the year before, while bringing about no silverware, was an unforgettable rollercoaster.

Luis Suarez in the front seat, of course.

Luis Suarez's Liverpool brilliance

He might not have got his paws on the Premier League title, but Suarez’s name is certainly woven into the very fabric of Liverpool’s storied history.

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez celebrates

The recently-retired Uruguay international joined Liverpool from Ajax in a £22m deal way back in 2011, having earned a reputation of great promise during his time with the Dutch giants.

His time on Merseyside was a thing of singular brilliance. Even now, over a decade beyond his departure date, Suarez is hailed among the finest players to have performed in England’s top flight, and perhaps the architect of the most awe-inspiring individual campaign since the modern Premier League was founded in 1992.

Still kicking about in the MLS with pal Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, Suarez has led an unforgettable career, and though the riches ran deeper with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in Spain, the 39-year-old’s 31-goal haul, with 11 assists too, across just 33 top-flight matches in 2013/14 almost single-handedly supercharged an unlikely title conquering.

It wasn’t to be. Suarez understandably wanted to leave in search of pastures new after that agonising failure. This was over a year before Klopp would even alight in Liverpool, remember, and when Barcelona offered a jaw-dropping £65m sum for his signature, it was a no-brainer.

Now, a new era. The annals record that one-time Suarez-fevered patch to be several ages in the background at Anfield, in fact. Klopp’s time has flown past and now Arne Slot is at the wheel.

This is a team studded with first-class stars, but there’s one in particular who could be Slot’s own version of the Uruguayan great, and no, it’s not Suarez’s countryman Darwin Nunez.

Luis Diaz could be Liverpool's next super-money star

As the more discerning minds might have guessed from the big blocked text right ahead, the man in question is Luis Diaz, who has gone from strength to strength under Slot’s wing this season.

Liverpool star Luis Diaz

Last year, Klopp utilised Diaz’s electric pace and penetrative dribbling to a positive effect, but Slot has seized such qualities and refined them into something potent and deadly.

Having scored 13 goals and supplied five assists across 51 matches in all competitions in 2023/24, Diaz was definitely effective, but under Slot’s wing, he’s notched nine goals and two assists from merely 16 appearances.

The 27-year-old carries a very singular threat, and in such a way, is a bit like Suarez in that he’s so distinctive. His loping gait is instantly recognisable and there’s a real menace to his attacking approach, crackling with energy and ideas upon every final third entry.

As per FBref, Diaz ranks among the top 4% of Premier League attacking midfielders and wingers in 2024/25 for goals scored, the top 7% for pass completion, the top 10% for shot-creating actions and the top 15% for successful take-ons per 90, highlighting his robust style.

Of course, he’s not a centre-forward and nor is he stylistically similar to Suarez, but Diaz is one of Liverpool’s most profitable players to be sure, and recently bagged a Champions League hat-trick when placed at number nine by Slot during Liverpool’s 4-0 romping of Bayer Leverkusen.

His silky-smooth style of performance has even drawn comparisons to players such as Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala, who has been on fire himself this term, scoring nine goals and supplying four assists across 13 matches.

According to FBref, that is, with the stats-built site revealing that, stylistically, the respective stars align. With this in mind, Diaz could perhaps fetch a transfer fee surpassing that of Suarez’s, for Musiala has been attracting attention from Manchester City of late and is believed to be transfer-priced for a fee in excess of £100m.

He wouldn’t command the same dizzying transfer fee that Philippe Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona marked, but Diaz would certainly be sold for a handsome sum, and given that La Blaugrana have a long-standing interest in the South American, perhaps his stunning exploits could lead him to a lucrative transfer to Spain, much like Suarez.

Indeed, Diaz, who has been hailed as an “incredible” signing for Liverpool by Klopp, was pursued by outfits as mighty as Barcelona this summer, and The Athletic reported that Liverpool would only entertain proposals that far outstretched the £50m total fee that was paid to bring him in from Porto several years ago.

Perhaps, in today’s bonkers market, that £65m figure that Barca paid for Suarez might not even cut it for Liverpool. Whatever happens, the Reds have well and truly hit the jackpot with this one. Diaz is sure to play a significant part in the trophy-hunting efforts of Slot’s side, and maybe he’ll be allowed to venture off to Spain at some stage – for a most lucrative sum.

Chloe Kelly's reaction to Lionesses' squad omission and impact at Arsenal after striking loan deal and potential date of second Gunners debut revealed

Chloe Kelly's reaction to being left out of the latest Lionesses' squad has been revealed ahead of a potential second Arsenal debut this weekend.

  • Kelly left out of England squad this week
  • Reaction to news revealed by Arsenal boss Slegers
  • Could make second Gunners debut at weekend
Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kelly hasn't played football since January 12, despite securing a loan move from Manchester City to Arsenal on deadline day of the January transfer window. That's because the Gunners' two games following the deal were both against City and their third was in the FA Cup, for which she is cup-tied. Those unfortunate circumstances ultimately cost Kelly earlier this week though, when she was left out of the England squad due to a lack of minutes.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, Kelly could finally return to action this weekend, with her eligible for Arsenal's Women's Super League clash with north London rivals Tottenham. She is familiar with the fixture, having scored in it as a teenager after breaking into the Gunners' first-team as a promising academy product, and could be about to grace it again – though head coach Renee Slegers was coy on what role the winger could play.

  • WHAT SLEGERS SAID

"She's settled very well and obviously she knows what Arsenal is, she comes from the club, so we're happy she's back," Slegers said in her pre-match press conference on Friday. "What she's bringing to us is obviously her qualities as an attacking player but what she's also shown is her willingness to defend and be aggressive and work hard, and I think she lifts our training environment as well. We're very happy with Chloe. We hope she's available for Sunday. We know what she can do for us. I look forward to her first minutes for Arsenal and we'll see when that is."

Asked if her absence from the England squad could actually be beneficial, by allowing the 27-year-old that little extra time to settle in her new surroundings, Slegers said: "We want the best for Chloe. I've spoken to Chloe and she's said that she accepts situations as they are. She's just really happy she's with us at the moment and she wants to take every opportunity, wherever it is, in training or match environment, to try and push herself and find the next level and get her rhythm in playing minutes again."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

As for whether this loan spell can get Kelly back into the Lionesses' squad ahead of this summer's European Championship, Slegers was keen to point out that she "can't control" such a thing, but added: "Chloe's with us and we want to make her time at Arsenal the best. We want to support her and and drive her forwards. She's very keen to find her next level and get the rhythm of training and playing, so I think that's all we can focus on and that's what we do at Arsenal with her. Of course, players have ambitions to play on a high level for the club, but also for the national teams, but that's that's not something that's in my control. I'll do everything I can to help Chloe at Arsenal."

2/10: Media slam £30k-p/w Rangers ace who lost possession 12 times vs Lyon

One Rangers player’s performance in the 4-1 defeat to Lyon was lambasted by the watching media on a terrible night at Ibrox for Philippe Clement’s side.

Rangers humbled by Lyon in Europe

The Gers enjoyed seeing rivals Celtic thumped 7-1 by Borussia Dortmund earlier in the week, but the hope was that they could show the Scottish Premiership off in a better light when Lyon made the trip to Ibrox for a Europa League clash on Thursday evening.

Instead, Clement’s side were comprehensively beaten on their own turf, succumbing to a 4-1 defeat and looking another level down in quality from their opponents. Tom Lawrence equalised in the first half, but from that point on, the Ligue 1 outfit pulled clear and deservedly picked up all three points.

Phillipe Clement

It was an awful night for Clement and his players, with the Belgian no doubt likely to find himself under more pressure to keep his job, following a hit-and-miss start to the season across all competitions.

Rangers are already five points adrift of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race, and only narrowly won 1-0 at home to Hibernian last weekend, with the visitors missing a penalty.

Rangers star's performance vs Lyon slammed

There were so many players who underperformed for the Gers against Lyon, but one individual who has come in for more criticism than most is James Tavernier.

The Rangers captain was miles below his best, with Rangers News even giving him a 2/10 player rating, claiming he was given a “torrid time” throughout the night.

Meanwhile, The Scotsman could only hand him a four, saying: “Missed a very early chance that ought to have put Rangers in front. Struggled to deal with the sheer pace and trickery of the Lyon backline and was beaten by Fofana at the far post for Lyon’s fourth goal. Replaced on hour mark by Kasanwirjo.”

Give Me Sport said there were “question marks” around his defending while Glasgow World handed him a 3/10: “Poor positioning and too slow to react at the back post for Fofana to net Lyon’s fourth. Unable to keep tabs on Fofana and given the run-around all evening.”

Tavernier has been an unbelievable servant for Rangers down the years, producing remarkable levels of consistency and end product going forward, but the negativity towards him after the Lyon defeat feels warranted. The £30,000-a-week ace was so poor that he was substituted on the hour mark, but he still had time to lose possession on 12 different occasions, highlighting his wasteful nature on the ball, which can be punished in European competition.

Tavernier also completed just 70% of his passes and made zero tackles or clearances, as well as being dribbled past once, with his defensive frailties exposed at times. Every player has an off day and this was one such occasion for Tavernier, and the key now is for him to show his leadership and bounce back this weekend, with Rangers hosting St Johnstone in the league on Sunday night.

At 32, there will inevitably be some supporters who will claim that the Englishman’s best days are now behind him, and it is up to the Gers skipper to prove them wrong.

Man Utd can forget Van Nistelrooy & Tuchel by hiring amazing Fergie signing

Over the summer Erik ten Hag met with members of the new Manchester United hierarchy to determine whether he’d remain in the dugout at Old Trafford.

Whether or not the verdict was conclusive, the Dutchman remained in Manchester and is now overseeing United’s worst start to a Premier League campaign after seven matches. Talk about making the wrong decision.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co did have a gander at former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel but he rejected any advances having just been laid off by the German giants.

That said, it looks as though the ex-Chelsea manager is back on the table as a candidate.

The candidates to replace Erik ten Hag

If Ten Hag does lose his job – with increasing scrutiny on the Netherlands native – then they could turn to a number of options.

Tuchel is being touted again with notable journalist Fabrizio Romano revealing the latest on Man United’s ‘admiration’ for him.

Speaking recently, he said: “What happened [in the summer] is that internally at Manchester United, they had a meeting with Thomas Tuchel and also with his agent representing him. Then they decided not to proceed on both sides. On Tuchel’s side, he wanted to relax a bit after Bayern, to take some energy and then return in the next months.

“And also, Manchester United decided to confirm Erik ten Hag as the manager. But that meeting is showing to you once again that the appreciation of INEOS, of the management team and of Manchester United in general, for Tuchel remains.”

Who else could arrive? Well, there has been admiration for former United youth team coach in Kieran McKenna, but any move for the Ipswich Town boss is highly unlikely considering he penned new terms at Portman Road over the summer.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is currently playing second fiddle to Ten Hag, is another option and one who certainly knows the club.

There will, of course, be fears they could have another Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the cards here but Van Nistelrooy has at least managed at a high level with PSV Eindhoven.

Van Nistelrooy's Eredivisie record compared to Arne Slot and Erik ten Hag.

There’s also Michael Carrick, who was once interim boss. The current Middlesbrough head coach could have been given the gig on a full-time basis back then but other options were considered.

According to the aforementioned Solskjaer, he should be given the gig as well. “He’s a winner but he’s still in control of his emotions. I cannot see him not being the Manchester United manager,” the Norwegian said.

What Carrick could bring to Man United

Sentiment should never be a consideration when signing a player, let alone hiring a new manager, the face of your football club, the decision maker, the main man.

But, with Carrick, we’re certainly not talking about sentiment. We’re talking about one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s best signings, a player who as Solskjaer notes, is a “winner”.

Hayden-Hackney-and-Michael-Carrick

His time with Boro has been up and down but there are some exciting attributes which we’ll run you through in just a moment.

With the second-tier club, Carrick steered them to an eighth-placed finish, just four points off the play-offs. He did so by employing what Riley McCree described as a “calming presence” and with a ‘good calm atmosphere inside the building’ – something another of his players Jonny Howson alluded to.

That feels like the total opposite of the chaos that seems to be engulfing Ten Hag’s squad. After all, you don’t slump to 14th place in the table and ‘rest’ the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez for a game that could determine your job.

It may well have paid off by keeping a clean sheet against Aston Villa last Sunday but Ten Hag’s words speak of delusion, they speak of a lack of clarity in what he’s trying to do.

With Carrick, he never wavers from the plan in place. That was seen in the 2023/24 campaign when the former midfielder overcame a difficult start to the season at Boro where they had lost seven straight games before finishing just outside the league’s top six. It was that calmness again that helped steady the ship.

As one figure told the i newspaper: “He’s not a ranter or raver by nature, he’s methodical and believes in what he’s doing. He’s intelligent and focused on finding solutions rather than problems. It just creates this culture where there’s no panic when things go wrong.”

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Again, this feels like the opposite of what’s occurring at Old Trafford now. Ten Hag exudes panic. The players clearly don’t buy into what he’s doing.

At Boro, the players really believe Carrick is the man to take them to the Premier League with the i explaining once more of how his ideas on the training pitch are ‘fresh, innovative and players love them.’

So, what about the style of play? Well, it’s a 4-2-3-1 traditionally on paper but the 43-year-old can be a lot more flexible than that, specifically in attack there the front four players have out-of-possession roles but when on the ball have a licence to roam out of position.

It all feels a bit too rigid under Ten Hag at United in comparison. Marcus Rashford is often strictly on the left. Alejandro Garnacho is usually strictly on the right. Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee will regularly drop into the pockets but there isn’t much movement out of position beyond that.

michael-carrick-tottenham-hotspur-middlesbrough-arteta-manager-arsenal

It may well be too soon for a manager of Carrick’s inexperience to be given such a difficult job at Old Trafford but he certainly boasts the man management, tactical nous and knowledge of the club to give it a right go.

John Cornell, key figure behind World Series Cricket, dies aged 80

Cornell took the original idea to Kerry Packer for a competition that would change world cricket

John Cornell, the Australian TV and film icon and one of the major architects behind World Series Cricket (WSC), has died at the age of 80 after a 20-year battle with Parkinson’s disease.Cornell played a central role in the creation of WSC when he took the idea to Kerry Packer in 1976. After initially struggling to get it off the ground, the format went on to revolutionise the game while also for a time threatening to tear it apart.Cornell was managing Dennis Lillee when the idea of WSC was first formed as a way of better paying players and he would be a key figure in signing other international stars to the competition. And it was Cornell who approached a Sydney advertising agency to create a jingle for the competition when it had struggled to take off in the first season – the outcome was the iconic “A classic Australian character, John Cornell made the lives he touched much richer, not only through donations, but also through his generosity of spirit, humour, humility and honour,” his family said in a statement. “A true egalitarian, John sought equity and equality, and fought for a fair go.”John’s acute instincts and sharp intelligence drove his rebellious push of World Series Cricket against the establishment for higher recognition and bigger salaries for the world’s players of his favourite game, reimagining, marketing and capturing it in a brand-new form.”Away from his impact on cricket, his achievements were legendary in TV and film including producing and co-writing which starred his long-time business partner Paul Hogan and remains the most profitable Australian movie of all time.Prior to the movie he started out as a journalist in Perth, then was the original producer of before a 16-year run of “John Cornell was a man of enormous intellect and a creative genius who managed to touch so many, but as importantly he was a man with a big heart that filled a room,” Michael Healy, Nine’s director of television, said.”From journalism with the creation of A Current Affair, through sport with World Series Cricket and entertainment with his mate Hoges they made magic on television for decades here at Nine.”

Farke’s top target refuses new deal from his club after Leeds’ £3.4m bid

Daniel Farke’s top midfield target for Leeds United this summer has just rejected a new contract and will now be available for free in nine months as things stand.

The Yorkshire side had a very busy but stressful summer transfer window, but that hasn’t affected them on the pitch, as they have made a strong start to the campaign, remaining unbeaten in their opening four league matches.

Leeds' new signing is already not in Farke's good books as dispute emerges

Leeds United’s new signing has already caused a dispute with manager Daniel Farke.

2 ByBrett Worthington Sep 3, 2024 Leeds United’s transfer window

Most of Leeds’ transfer window was spent worrying about which player they were going to lose next, as the club saw Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, Luis Sinisterra, and Georginio Rutter leave and sign for Premier League teams.

Those departures brought a lot of money to the club, and Leeds used that to add eight new players to their squad as they look to end their stay in the Championship. One of the players that they brought in was midfielder Ao Tanaka, who joined from German side Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The 25-year-old has only featured once for Leeds so far, but it has come to light that Tanaka has caused a dispute at Leeds. It emerged on Tuesday that Tanaka was never “first choice” for the Yorkshire side in the summer transfer window, as they went for him after missing out on another target.

The hierarchy decided to move for Tanaka, which was a decision that didn’t please Farke, and that has caused a dispute between the Leeds boss and the people above. Tanaka had less than a year left to run on his contract at Düsseldorf, and given he refused a new contract, the German side were an easier outfit to negotiate with. However, there may be good news for Leeds, as their top target will soon be available after the latest developments.

Farke’s main Leeds target refuses new contract

FC Koln sporting director Christian Keller has revealed that midfielder Dejan Ljubicic has refused to sign a new contract at the German club, and given his contract expires at the end of the season, he will soon become a free agent just nine months from now.

This is potentially good news for Farke and Leeds, as it was reported during the summer that the Yorkshire side tabled a bid worth £3.4 million to sign Ljubicic, which explains who the manager's first choice target was before getting rejected and moving on to Tanaka.

Dejan Ljubicic for FC Koln.

The 26-year-old already has two goals and two assists in four Bundesliga 2 games, but while Koln try and tie him to a new contract, the player just wants to concentrate on his football.

Keller said on Ljubicic’s situation: I didn't have to do a lot of convincing. There is always a lot written about a transfer period. The fact is: Dejo has not changed. The fact is: Dejo likes to be there. It's also a fact that he's playing well.

"Dejo and I have addressed this very openly, already at the beginning of the pre-season in the training camp and now again recently. His position at the moment is that he wants to concentrate on the season and play the football he can play again."
