Star released by Leeds at 16 is now starring in the Premier League

Leeds United star Archie Gray is the latest player to emerge as a key first-team performer after graduating from the club's academy set-up.

The 17-year-old whiz has started 31 of the club's Championship matches under German head coach Daniel Farke, who arrived in Yorkshire last summer.

A central midfielder naturally, the teenage gem has been the first-choice option at right-back for the former Norwich City tactician after an injury to Djed Spence, who was on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, opened the door for him to come in.

He was given an opportunity to impress by the boss at the start of the season and grasped it with both hands, but not every young talent had that chance during their time at Elland Road.

Archie Gray for Leeds United.

Tom Cairney started his youth career with the Whites but was released before he could make his senior debut for Leeds, and the talented gem's value went on to skyrocket.

Why Leeds ditched Tom Cairney

The attacking midfielder joined the club's academy as a seven-year-old and played through the age groups until they decided to let him leave in 2017.

He was 16 at the time and stood at just 5 foot 1. His height reportedly played a role in Leeds' decision to release him on a free transfer after nine years at Elland Road.

They seemingly decided that Cairney would not develop, physically and possibly technically, to a level that would see him emerge as a first-team operator in Yorkshire, as he left with zero senior appearances for them.

Tom Cairney

The Scotland international revealed – later in his career – that he was "crushed" by that exit from the club, given how much time the young whiz spent developing there.

Hull City picked the English-born maestro up for nothing after his release and his market valuation on Transfermarkt came in at €750k (£643k) by August 2010.

Why Tom Cairney's market value soared

The Fulham star currently stands at 6 foot and his growth spurt after moving on from Leeds may have played a part in the impressive career he has forged for himself.

After five goals and 11 assists in 80 appearances during his time with Hull at first-team level, Cairney made the switch to Blackburn Rovers, initially on loan in the summer of 2013 before the deal was made permanent in January 2014.

Fulham, who were in the Championship at the time, then swooped to sign him on a permanent basis in the summer of 2015 after the midfielder had produced nine goals and 16 assists in 85 matches for Rovers.

The impressive magician helped the Cottagers to secure promotion to the Premier League within three seasons, as he plundered 26 goals and 22 assists in 120 games in the second tier.

His 26th league goal during that period was the promotion-winning strike in the 2018 play-off final against Aston Villa, as you can see in the video above.

Fulham's captain stepped up when it mattered most to calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner to send the Cottagers up to the Premier League.

The magical midfielder's best season for goals and assists in his senior career, however, came earlier during the 2016/17 campaign for the London-based outfit.

Cairney's fantastic form for Fulham, and play-off final strike, helped his market value on Transfermarkt to skyrocket to a whopping €18m (£15.4m) by August 2018.

This means that his value soared by a staggering 2,300% from the €750k he was once valued at during his breakthrough at first-team level with Hull, after leaving Leeds for nothing.

Therefore, the Whites had a howler when they released Cairney as they did not give him enough time to grow into his body and find his feet, which Hull were prepared to do, and missed out on an excellent performer whose value soared over the subsequent years with no compensation.

Where Cairney is now

He has gone on to play over 300 matches for Fulham, who are currently in the Premier League, and has played more than 100 games in the top-flight.

The 33-year-old has registered four assists in 25 outings in the division this season – at least two more than any Leeds midfielder has managed in the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, the now-experienced star has been a solid operator for Fulham in the Premier League during the 2023/24 campaign.

The Scottish whiz has been strong in his duels – winning the majority of his physical contests – and offered quality at the top end of the pitch – with goals, assists, and big chances created – whilst being a reliable passer of the ball.

These statistics are particularly impressive for a 33-year-old – possibly heading into the last few years of his playing career – who has not started matches on a consistent basis for Marco Silva's side.

Tom Cairney

He has been a reliable and excellent performer when called upon by his club, which speaks to both his quality and professionalism to do that at his age in the Premier League.

This and his soaring market value earlier in his career highlights why Leeds had a howler when they decided to release him from their academy at the age of 16.

The left-footed maestro has been pulling the strings in midfield for Fulham for years and starred for Blackburn and Hull previously, in the Premier League and the Championship.

He has gone on to forge a successful career for himself in the top two tiers, which is where Leeds have been operating for the most part over the last 15 years – outside of a spell in League One.

It may be an important lesson for the Whites to learn with young players who are coming through now and possibly being deemed as too small or not physical enough to make it, as they could naturally develop in that sense and then shine as a footballer – as Cairney did.

Na conversa com a imprensa, o técnico Roberto Fernandes foi claro no recado e citou que é uma necessidade do time buscar novas peças.

Robinson reacts to "really good" Leeds update on Gnonto shared by Phil Hay

Former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has been reacting to a positive off-field Elland Road update on one specific player.

Leeds’ Championship form

The Whites have been in fine form in the Championship under Daniel Farke, winning all five league games in 2024, conceding just once during that time.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

The latest second-tier win came on Friday evening at Bristol City, with Wilfried Gnonto scoring the only goal of the game in the second half. Talking after the match, Farke praised Gnonto, saying: "I was hoping it would be like this. I'm happy and delighted for him. In recent weeks he was there with good work. A goal or assist was missing and that he's there with a crucial goal, I'm delighted."

Wilfried Gnonto celebrates a goal for Leeds United in the Championship.

Leeds now find themselves above Ipswich Town in the league standings, a point off second-place Southampton, who have a game in hand. Away from the pitch, the Whites have also been working behind the scenes to extend the contracts of two highly-rated youngsters – Archie Gray and Mateo Joseph – and Gnonto could be the next to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Wilfried Gnonto contract update

Phil Hay shared an update on Gnonto’s future last month, saying that the club were looking to seal an agreement with the forward, with a new deal thought to be close.

Reacting to that update, Robinson, who contributes for Sky Sports, labelled it as a “really good sign coming out of the club”. Talking to MOT Leeds News, the pundit said: “It’s a really good sign coming out of the club. It’s very hard to keep players happy who aren’t playing and Willy Gnonto hasn’t started every game this season.

“He’s been a bit-part player at the best of times, started some games, been in and out of the squad. But that’s what big squads do and that’s what good squads do.

“You liken it to Manchester City in the Premier League and the way that they rotate their squad. Players realise and appreciate that in a good, strong squad that is playing a lot of games they aren’t necessarily going to start every game.

“With a new manager coming in his relationship with him must be good if what we’re hearing, that he’s going to sign a new contract, is right.”

Gnonto seems to be finding his feet under Farke, taking his opportunity following an injury to teammate Dan James last month.

He was the match-winner last time in the Championship on what was just his second league start since October, and after the transfer request saga in the summer that saw him refuse to feature in a number of games, Farke appears to be slowly getting the best out of the Italy international, something which could prove helpful in the run in.

Farke could land his next Sargent in Leeds swoop for "flying" 6 ft 2 EFL ace

The January transfer window is open for business and Leeds United could look to add to their attacking options before the end of the month.

Daniel Farke's side are gunning for automatic promotion to the Premier League and are currently seven points adrift of the top two in the Championship.

TEAMtalk reported in November that the Whites are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign AFC Wimbledon centre-forward Ali Al-Hamadi.

Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, and Sunderland are also said to be eyeing up the Iraq international, who has caught the eye with his performances this season.

Farke could now secure his next version of Josh Sargent, who was a reported target for Leeds last summer and signed for Norwich by the German in 2021, by winning the race to sign the League Two star.

Josh Sargent's Championship career in numbers

The USA international recently made his comeback after 22 matches out with a serious ankle injury that was sustained back in August against Huddersfield.

Sargent has produced four goals, one assist, and two 'big chances' created in six Championship matches either side of that horrible blow.

His impressive return this term has come off the back of 13 goals, two assists, and five 'big chances' created in 40 league outings for the Canaries from the 23-year-old whiz during the 2022/23 campaign.

The 6 foot 1 marksman, whose workload was once lauded as "unbelievable" by Farke, has proven himself to be a fantastic goalscorer at that level and has the physicality to be an imposing number nine who opposition defenders loathe to play against.

He has won 3.5 duels per game this season and has been a constant nuisance to centre-backs with 1.7 ball recoveries per match for his side.

The statistics that show why Al-Hamadi could be Sargent 2.0

Al-Hamadi is a player who could offer similar qualities to Farke's former forward at the top end of the pitch if Leeds sign him this month.

The 21-year-old ace, who is another up-and-coming number nine, can score and create goals whilst also being able to offer a physical presence.

He has racked up 13 goals, six assists, and seven 'big chances' created in 23 League Two outings for Wimbledon so far during the 2023/24 campaign.

His impressive form in front of goal has led to praise from analyst Tom Williams, who claimed that the Iraq international is "flying" and will not slow down.

The 6 foot 2 EFL dynamo – once described as a "threat" to opposition defences by manager Johnnie Jackson – has also made 3.0 ball recoveries and won 4.2 duels per game this term.

These statistics show that Al-Hamadi, like Sargent, is a lethal centre-forward who can also cause constant problems for defenders with his physicality and pressing to win possession back, to go along with his attacking talent.

Of course, there is no guarantee that the 21-year-old ace will be able to translate all of those qualities up to the Championship as it is a big leap up from League Two.

However, for the right price, it could be a worthwhile gamble for Leeds to make as his impressive statistics indicate that the potential is there for him to be Farke's new Sargent in the number nine role.

Spurs could sign Son a "terrifying" £75m partner who loves Harry Kane

After failing to win any of their last five matches prior to last weekend, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur earned a much-needed 4-1 victory over Newcastle United, ensuring that the early season feel-good factor has momentarily returned.

Losing record goal scorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer hasn’t had such a drastic impact as everyone expected, which is a testament to the Australian’s man management and tactical approach, getting the best out of Heung-min Son in particular.

With James Maddison and Manor Soloman out, and Spurs lacking in attacking options, they are looking to buy a true striker, with the role currently being occupied by the South Korean and at times, Richarlison.

Tottenham transfers latest – Lois Openda

Even though the forward only moved to RB Leipzig in the summer, Lois Openda’s performances have piqued the interest of numerous big clubs, including Spurs according to the Mirror.

RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.

The Belgian’s value is thought to be around £75m and the Lilywhites want to make the centre-forward role much more competitive.

Manchester United are also reportedly interested in signing the Leipzig striker who scored a brace at the Etihad in the Champions League last month.

Lois Openda’s style of play

Openda is known for his speed and acceleration, which has been described as “terrifying” by European football writer, Seb Stafford-Bloor. The 23-year-old has exploded on the Bundesliga and European stage in his first season, scoring ten goals in the league in 14 appearances and four in five in the UEFA Champions League.

Based on the Belgium internationals FBref scouting report, it is clear that Openda thrives in front of goal, but not necessarily in build-up or in possession. The table below serves as evidence for this.

As you can see, the ex-Vitesse forward is the definition of a true finisher, with elite box movement that is reminiscent of Kane, who Openda loves and has clearly modelled aspects of his game on.

Indeed, speaking about the former Spurs star, the forward stated: "Harry Kane is one of the best in the world. He’s better than me. But that’s exactly what drives me – I want to be at his level one day."

All of the forward's goals this season have been scored within the penalty box, which would potentially benefit Tottenham's current captain. Indeed, it would give Son the freedom to create and find the attacker in a similar fashion to the first two goals that Spurs scored last weekend.

The Lilywhites’ captain would feature off the left rather than the central role he has been deployed in so far this season, but Postecoglou’s approach is fluid with positions prioritised over personnel in the role.

Lois Openda in action.

His pace and threat on the counterattack with Son and Maddison feeding him would be one of the deadliest combinations in the Premier League, especially when you add that to the fact that he can score with both feet. The number 17 will bring energy and a suffocating press to Spurs’ attack, as well as a constant out ball, as shown by the 8.56 passes received per game this season – a stat that ranks him within the best 6% in Europe. He certainly knows where to be – good news for the creative players at Spurs.

To briefly summarise, Openda could well be a season-changing signing for Spurs.

Kusal Perera returns to Sri Lanka Test squad

Danushka Gunathilaka was dropped after managing only 16 runs in four innings in New Zealand

Batsman Kusal Perera has returned to Sri Lanka’s Test squad for their two-Test series in Australia, which starts from January 24. Opener Danushka Gunathilaka, meanwhile, was dropped following scores of 1,3, 8 and 4 in New Zealand.Gunathilaka’s omission means Dimuth Karunaratne is set to have his third opening partner in as many series (Kaushal Silva had opened alongside him against England, in November). Kusal Perera may be among those vying for the opening spot, but Sadeera Samarawickrama and Lahiru Thirimanne are almost certain to be considered for the role as well, despite neither having played a Test in the last year.Angelo Mathews, who had been sidelined from the limited-overs series in New Zealand with a grade two strain in his left hamstring, has also been ruled out of the Australia Tests.Mathews’ injury aside, Kusal Perera’s inclusion is the only change from the Test squad that toured New Zealand. Kusal Perera’s recent Test form isn’t encouraging – he had only played three Tests in 2018, scoring 92 runs in six innings in the Caribbean. He did, however, show more impressive form in the ODI series in New Zealand, making 149 runs in three innings, including an excellent hundred, albeit in a losing cause.Bowlers Lakshan Sandakan, Nuwan Pradeep as well as batsmen Thirimanne and Samarawickrama have all been retained in the squad, despite not playing a Test in New Zealand. Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Kumara, Dushmantha Chameera, Kasun Rajitha and offspinner Dilruwan Perera comprise the remainder of the bowling contingent. The first Test in Australia begins on January 24 in Brisbane, with the second Test due to start on February 1 in Canberra.Squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Dimuth Karunaratne, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Kusal Perera, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandakan, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara, Dushmantha Chameera, Kasun Rajitha

PRIMEIRO TEMPO MELHOR DO GUARANI
