Renshaw keeps name in Test frame with third century

The opener made a timely hundred against the pink ball following Usman Khawaja’s fitness problems in the first Ashes Test

AAP23-Nov-2025Matt Renshaw’s golden summer continued with a magnificent 112 in front of Australia selector Tony Dodemaide at the Gabba. His innings drove Queensland to 352 for 7 at stumps on day two of the top-of-the-table Sheffield Shield clash after Victoria had declared late on the opening day.Renshaw had made scores of 128, 29, 101 and 51 in the Shield before Sunday’s knock. He also had a consistent ODI series against India which included an accomplished 56 in Sydney.Related

Runs are runs and Renshaw has filled his cup with them. The 29-year-old doesn’t have to do anything more to convince Australia selectors that he is ready for a return to the Test arena. All he needs is an opportunity.”I’m just keeping it really simple and having a lot of fun out there and having good intent,” Renshaw told AAP. “It’s been a good start and hopefully it amounts to something at the end of March. I will keep trying to put in performances to help win games for Queensland. I’m just concentrating on what I can control and that is trying to do my job for the team.”There is doubt over who will open in the second Test of the Ashes series at the Gabba, which starts on Thursday-week.Usman Khawaja’s back spasms in the first Test have put him in some doubt while Travis Head’s blistering century as opener has also put him in the frame to stay at the top of the order alongside Perth debutant Jake Weatherald.Renshaw now has 421 Shield runs for the summer, putting him on top of the aggregate list with 19 runs more than Marnus Labuschagne. He was patient early in his innings against Victoria before finding a more aggressive tempo and his drives down the ground were exquisite. Once Renshaw reached his half-century the runs started to flow all around the ground. He brought up his century with a controlled cut for three off spinner Todd Murphy. A healthy contingent at the Vulture St end of the ground gave him a rapturous reception, realising what a vital innings it was in the context of the summer. His stay ended when he nicked a delivery that just moved away from Fergus O’Neill, who toiled manfully all day with his tight lines.Renshaw received solid support from Angus Lovell in an 88-run opening stand and Hugh Weibgen.Former Australia Under-19 captain Weibgen, playing his second Shield match, looks a promising prospect with his classy strokeplay and composure. The tall 21-year-old will play for the Prime Minister’s XI against an England XI in a two-day, pink-ball match that starts on November 29 in Canberra. He was caught in a juggling effort by Mitchell Perry trying to loft Murphy over the long-on boundary.Lachie Hearne (47) continued the momentum until he was brilliantly caught on the deep midwicket boundary by Campbell Kellaway.

Apesar dos poucos gols no Pré-Olímpico (apenas dois), Endrick vem sendo o destaque da Seleção com assistências e muita participação no ataque do time comandado por Ramon Menezes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold finally 'ready' to start for Real Madrid as Xabi Alonso offers update on summer signing

Xabi Alonso has admitted that Trent Alexander-Arnold is ready to start for Real Madrid this weekend. The England international has endured a testing start to life in Madrid following his high-profile move to the capital from Liverpool, with injuries restricting the 27-year-old to just two league starts. However, the defender is fit to feature from the off against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

TAA returned to Anfield on Tuesday

Real Madrid have the chance to go eight points clear of rivals Barcelona on Sunday, the defending champions not in action until later on Sunday night when they face Celta Vigo. have made a flying start to life under Xabi Alonso winning 10 of 11 league matches, including their El Clasico triumph last month.

Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham saw Real Madrid claim a 2-1 win over Barcelona in a heated encounter at the Bernabeu. Alexander-Arnold was fit enough for the bench in the narrow victory over the and only recently returned to action in the Champions League in midweek.

The right-back played the final knockings of the game at Anfield as Alexander-Arnold made a late cameo on his former stomping ground. The former Liverpool man departed the Reds under a cloud, and was resoundingly booed by the home support when he went to warm up and once he replaced Arda Guler in the 82nd minute.

  • 'He's been training for a few weeks'

And Alonso has confirmed that Alexander-Arnold is fit to feature from the off against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday afternoon. Were the Spaniard to use the summer signing from the outset, it would mark Alexander-Arnold's third league start of the season and his first since suffering a hamstring injury against Marseille in September.

Alexander-Arnold was forced off after just five minutes in the eventual 2-1 win over the French giants, with Dani Carvajal – who is now injured – and Federico Valverde both deputising at right-back in the former's absence.

And when asked whether the ex-Reds man is ready to start on Sunday, Alonso replied: "Yes, [Trent] is ready, he's been training for a few weeks.

"Tomorrow you'll know if he starts or not. In the circumstances, [Valverde] has played there and done well. He's always ready to help the team. It's an option we have."

Real Madrid looking to move on from another big loss

Real Madrid's defeat to Liverpool in midweek marked their third high-profile loss under Alonso, who succeeded Carlo Ancelotti in the capital over the summer. The Spanish giants were thumped 4-0 by PSG at the Club World Cup earlier this year, while their sole league defeat was a 5-2 mauling at rivals Atletico.

Alexis Mac Allister's winning goal on the hour mark proved to be the difference between the two sides at Anfield. And when asked about the stats that showed Real Madrid covered less ground than Liverpool on Merseyside, Alonso replied: "You have to put it in context. We've had all kinds of games. You have to look at how the game went; you can't make a definitive judgement on just one game. We've analysed the game, we've talked about it, and now it's about Vallecas.

"We want to be consistent in our performance. But we know not every game is the same. I have no complaints about my players' attitude."

  • Alonso responds to Bale's comments

Alonso also took the chance in his pre-Rayo Vallecano press conference to respond to comments made by former Real Madrid star Gareth Bale on Tuesday night. Bale, working as a pundit, said that being Real Madrid coach involves "managing egos rather than just tactics".

The 43-year-old said of Bale's comments: "It's a dressing room with great players. We've started a new project, I'm very happy, and we're making progress."

Real Madrid will hope to claim all the spoils at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday as they look to take another step towards a 37th La Liga title. That'll prove to be easier said than done, however.

The Spanish giants have failed to win their last three games at Rayo, and have drawn their last two trips across the capital. Valverde, Bellingham and Rodrygo all scored in this fixture last season, an entertaining 3-3 draw last December.

Not just Simons: Spurs flop who lost 100% duels looks like wasted money

And so Tottenham Hotspur are not there yet. This much we can tell.

Residual problems from the dysfunction of the Ange Postecoglou era were always going to creep into the new campaign, but there’s an undeniable air of frustration as Aston Villa grew into the game on Sunday afternoon and left Spurs’ ground with all the spoils, having fallen behind early in the first half thanks to Rodrigo Bentancur’s strike.

Tottenham have enjoyed a steady start to Thomas Frank’s tenure, but one win from four in the Premier League of late has emphasised the scale of the task.

Creatively, Tottenham weren’t at their sharpest on Sunday, and this played into Villa’s hands as the hosts retreated, pulled deeper as they sought to group and defend their advantage.

They succumbed to the pressure, and questions were asked post-game of Xavi Simons, whose duty as playmaker-in-chief was left unfulfilled against Unai Emery’s side.

Xavi Simons still leaving something to be desired

At the base of midfield, Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur did a fine job of protecting the Tottenham backline, winning between them 19 duels on the afternoon, as per Sofascore.

But Villa finished the match having won 53% of the duels, speaking of issues from other areas of the field.

And there’s no denying Simons struggled. Signed from RB Leipzig for £51m this summer, the diminutive creator has yet to get going in the Premier League, with Villa’s assured build-up and robustness in the challenge reducing Simons to an inconsequential display.

The 22-year-old has arrived in a new environment and is hardly getting the best service at this early stage of his Tottenham career, but neither is he covering himself in glory with impactful performances. Both things can be true.

Frank discussed after the defeat his side’s issues in creating chances, and despite retaining the majority of possession – as is typically the case when Tottenham play at home – there was little of impetus and authority from the talented number ten, and though he dropped deep to contribute more, there has hardly been enough on show throughout these opening months.

In fact, football.london branded the Dutchman with a 5/10 match rating, writing about his work rate and willingness to get stuck in but also acknowledging his lack of attacking flair and impact.

There is anticipation and expectation, however, that Simons will grow into his skin and thrive in the Premier League. However, he’s not the only summer signing who’s struggling to bring it all together so far, with Randal Kolo Muani still to announce himself.

Randal Kolo Muani may be wasted money

From an attacking standpoint, centre-forward remains a problem for Tottenham Hotspur. It’s an age-old problem, for the scale of Harry Kane’s brilliance means that his departure only two years ago very much feels a lifetime ago.

Quite simply, Spurs are not creating anywhere near enough chances, and though they sit sixth in the standings, two points behind second-placed Manchester City, more offensive influence and cohesion is required if Spurs are to finish strongly in the Premier League and challenge for silverware once again.

Kolo Muani certainly has the talent and goalscoring ability to contribute toward that goal, but injuries have limited him to a bit-part role so far.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward arrived in north London on a one-year loan deal on transfer deadline day, arriving with a weight of expectation after reviving his career on loan with Juventus last year, scoring ten goals and providing three assists across 22 matches for the Italians, demonstrating sharp and athletic movements and ranking among the top 7% of Serie A forwards for goals scored per 90, as per FBref.

Once hailed as a “superstar” by German legend Lothar Matthaus, the 26-year-old has what it takes to be a star at Tottenham, but injuries have limited him to just two outings so far this season, and though he only featured briefly against Aston Villa, he did indeed leave much to be desired.

Football.london saw it fit to brand Kolo Muani with a 5/10 match rating in spite of his brief cameo, and that’s because he missed a sitter late on, fluffing his lines during a goalmouth scramble with only moments left on the clock.

It was an “incredible” miss, as former Premier League goalkeeper Rob Green put it, and one which might have served as a springboard for the France international’s career in London, but it wasn’t to be. Moreover, he lost both of his contested ground duels, and will need to be more convincing in the challenge going forward.

Though there’s plenty of time to right the wrongs and nail down a starting spot at number nine this season, Kolo Muani is pitted against thick competition at the front of the ship, and if Dominic Solanke clicks into gear, he might have a tough task ousting the Englishman.

Joao Palhinha and Randal Kolo Muani

For now, we must reserve judgement on a player who has suffered an injury-hit start to his Tottenham career, and who has a proven pedigree that suggests he could be the man Frank and Spurs are searching for.

But if he doesn’t take the chances that fall his way, especially with Tottenham lacking creativity and the fitness of two linchpins in James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, then it could be a long and difficult campaign for the Les Bleus star.

The new Dele Alli: Frank must unleash Spurs' £97m-rated "game changer"

Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Aston Villa on Sunday, Thomas Frank must start his new “game changer” centrally as he’s the new Dele Alli.

PIF chief tells Newcastle to sign Brazilian "monster" amid conversation with agent

Turning their attention towards South America, one PIF chief reportedly personally wants to sign a Brazilian rising star for Newcastle United in 2026.

Ross Wilson closing in on first Newcastle signing

It was a busy international break at St James’ Park, as PIF welcomed new sporting director, Ross Wilson, from Nottingham Forest.

The 41-year-old arrives hoping to add some much-needed stability to Newcastle’s transfer department and has already been welcomed with open arms by manager Eddie Howe.

Wilson hasn’t taken long to make his mark, either.

According to reports, he’s already closing in on his first signing for the club in the form of Barnsley youngster Josh Kenchington. The England Under-15s star is reportedly set to arrive after the Magpies agreed a deal to secure his signature ahead of 2026.

Compared to John Stones, who also started out at Barnsley, Kenchington could turn into a major coup for Newcastle if he realises his impressive potential in years to come.

That said, he’s not the only young player that Newcastle have set their sights on.

Those at St James’ are also reportedly targeting a major South American talent who’s making serious noise across the Atlantic.

PIF chief personally wants to sign Rayan for Newcastle

According to reports in Brazil, as relayed by Sport Witness, PIF and Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan now personally wants to sign Rayan from Vasco da Gama in 2026 — telling an agent that he sees massive potential in the winger.

Al-Rumayyan has apparently “expressed his wish” for Newcastle to do a deal behind-the-scenes, and it is clear to see why.

The 19-year-old winger has really impressed in Brazil.

Newcastle's “exciting” 18-year-old is looking “like Gordon” out on loan

Newcastle’s wing evolution continues with teenage prodigy waiting in the wings

ByWill Miller Oct 17, 2025

With a release clause as cheap as €40m (£35m), Newcastle should be in a strong position to afford the talented winger if they fend off any competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

Rayan recently became the youngest player in Vasco history to reach 10 Brazilian top flight goals since Dinamite in 1973, breaking a 52-year record, and he’s been in top form throughout the 2025 season with 15 strikes in all competitions — including eight in his last 13 league games.

What’s more, even with that release clause, Vasco value Rayan at just €30m (£26m), which hands Newcastle yet another boost if they push for his arrival.

Described as a “monster” by South American expert Nathan Joyes, Rayan is undoubtedly one to watch.

A number of South American talents have taken the Premier League by storm in recent years, and he could now be next in line.

It would be some statement from Wilson if he managed to pull off such a transfer coup so early into his Newcastle tenure.

Full-back Andrea Cambiaso has been with Juventus since 2022 after leaving Genoa, a club where he came through the academy.

The Italian was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City at the beginning of 2025 but remained in Turin and is under contract until 2029.

9 Edon Zhegrova €89,038 per week

Edon Zhegrova joined late in the 2025 summer transfer window from Lille in a deal worth €14.3m.

The Kosovo international can play on either wing and signed a five-year deal with Juventus.

8 Federico Gatti €110,385 per week

Centre-back Federico Gatti signed a new and improved Juventus deal in 2025 after becoming a regular in recent seasons.

The Italy international more than doubled his previous salary and is under contract until 2030.

7 Teun Koopmeiners €110,962 per week

Costing more than €50m from Serie A rivals Atalanta, Teun Koopmeiners was a marquee addition for Juventus in 2024.

The Dutch midfielder helped Atalanta to Europa League glory and signed a five-year deal in Turin, looking to win more silverware with Juve.

6 Manuel Locatelli €117,500 per week

Defensive midfielder Manuel Locatelli has been a Juventus player since 2021, although they initially signed the Italian on a two-year loan deal with an obligation to buy from Sassuolo.

Locatelli has been a regular since signing and is under contract until 2028.

5 Francisco Conceicao €135,385 per week

A loanee for the 2024/25 season, Francisco Conceicao made his move permanent from FC Porto for around €30m.

4 Lois Openda €142,500 per week

Juevtnus won the race to sign speedy forward Lois Openda from RB Leipzig in 2025 and will pay the German side €40m for the Belgian’s services.

Openda is on loan for the 2025/26 season but a transfer will be made permanent at the end of the season.

3 Bremer €178,077 per week

Juventus defender Gleison Bremer.

Picking up more than €9m per season is centre-back Bremer, who has been a Juventus player since 2022.

Signed from Torino, the Brazilian has continued to impress in Serie A, but unfortunately has had some injury issues in Turin.

2 Jonathan David €213,654 per week

With no transfer fee required, Juventus were able to offer Jonathan David an eye-catching €11.11m salary for the next five years.

The Canadian forward had plenty of offers around Europe but chose a move to Turin, where he will earn more than €55m in wages.

1 Dusan Vlahovic €427,308 per week

Comfortably Juventus’ highest-paid player is striker Dusan Vlahovic, who earns a whopping €22.22m per season in Turin.

Juventus won the race to sign the Serbia international from Fiorentina in 2022 for an initial €70m, though Vlahovic is out of contract in 2026, so his days as an Old Lady player could be numbered.

MI vs KKR: Ashwani Kumar takes four to demolish KKR for 116 on IPL debut

The left-arm fast bowler became the first Indian to take a four-wicket haul on IPL debut

Alagappan Muthu31-Mar-20253:07

Does Rohit have a technique issue?

Ashwani Kumar became the first Indian bowler, and sixth overall, to pick up four or more wickets on IPL debut and on the back of his performance Mumbai Indians wrapped up Kolkata Knight Riders for 116 in their first home game of IPL 2025.The 23-year-old left-arm seamer from Punjab tripled his career tally of wickets – from two to six – over the course of one evening. He dismissed the KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane with his first ball. He took down Rinku Singh and Andre Russell. This league does not present many higher quality of wickets. The most impressive thing about Kumar was how hard he was to line up. He had an orthodox bowling action. His speeds were largely in the early to mid 130kph range. Those are the kind of bowlers that get smashed around in the IPL. But try as they might, KKR were never able to do it. Kumar came to prominence because of his performances in the Sher-E-Punjab T20 trophy last year where he displayed an affinity for the death overs. He didn’t really bowl in that phase of the innings against KKR but he did show why he could find success in high-pressure situations. It was his control of length.Rinku tried to take him down, but one ball after coming down the track and hitting him for four, he was caught on the deep-point boundary. Kumar pulled his length back to surprise the batter. Russell tried to take him down, but one ball after clearing his front leg and smacking him through the line, he was beaten by a bouncer and then knocked over by a 140kph good length delivery that surprised the batter again.Mumbai are almost surely looking at their first win of IPL 2025 after losing their first two games. KKR, meanwhile, were left wondering what had gone wrong. They were put in to bat and they seemed very conscious of putting up a par-plus total, their batters going on the attack even though they lost Sunil Narine and Quinton de Kock in the first two overs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi looked good for his 26 off 16 but he fell immediately after the powerplay. That left KKR five down and forced them to bring in Manish Pandey as an Impact Player, which meant they will be going into the bowling innings short of options. The move didn’t work with Pandey falling for 19 off 14.
